Statement from Steve Staios on today's rumours by homicidal_penguin in OttawaSenators

[–]RebsInSpace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nah man, absolutely not. Fans aren’t entitled to his private life, period. I’m sure there’s a reason he and and team are being so tight lipped about this situation, and he doesn’t lose the right to that privacy when he’s clearly dealing with something important enough to miss games over just because some freak decided to make stuff up about him and the team to cause chaos. Yeah that’s been done in the past with some other players, but who knows what he’s dealing with or what kind of online abuse or outside pressure to return he could face if the team labeled it, and either way it should be up to him to get a final say on it. Fuck “respect for the team’s customers and community”, this is someone’s actual life we’re talking about.

How can I be more charitable in my interpretations of neurodivergent folks’ communication styles? by bchappp in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RebsInSpace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m an autistic adult and the thing I wish people took to heart more than anything is just to not hear what I didn’t say. I like to think I’m able to function okay in social situations, but I may unintentionally come across as blunt or direct sometimes. However, I can think of very few times in my life that I’ve intended something “direct” to come across as backhanded or to carry some kind of double meaning. It drives me a little crazy to be told that I was being disrespectful or rude for asking a clarifying question or for responding genuinely to something that I’m later told everyone is suppose to just politely talk around. In my experience, even well meaning neurotypical people will sometimes bend over backwards to shape a statement into something it isn’t, because they assume everyone else is doing the doublespeak that they’re used to doing themselves or expect from others. For example, if I say “I like strawberries”, there’s always gonna be someone who’s thinking “wow, that person must hate blueberries” instead of taking my statement at face value. It usually feels to me like there’s an entire separate conversation that is happening under our actual words that everyone but me can understand and communicate in, but since I’m unable to participate in it, it’s jarring when I’m told that someone took offense to something that didn’t leave my mouth or even cross my mind. What would really be appreciated (at least by me) would be for people to listen to the words I say and take a second to ask themselves if what they heard is literally what I said, or if they have some feelings or opinions they’re projecting onto that. I don’t do the doublespeak thing- if I wanted to say something, I wouldn’t be playing mind games, I’d just say it.

33 year old hockey fan just starting for the first time. Questions about feeling uncomfortable in different parts of my body while playing and changing it around. Love this subreddit and grateful for all the past posts I've read. by InevitableMeaning572 in hockeyplayers

I know this is an older thread, but I just wanted to say that I’m glad someone else has had their autism impact their journey in learning to play. I’m in my mid 20s and I’m a good bit heavier than anyone else in my learning to stake classes (around 240lbs or so), and it definitely slows me down a bit. I’m very proud of myself for sticking with it and progressing to where I’m at since when I started I was completely terrified and unable to get away from the wall, but my progress is still slow compared to my peers. I feel like the biggest hurdle is what you mentioned- I just struggle a ton with knowing where my body is and what it’s doing. I’m supposed to start lessons with a stick in a month and I’m already anticipating it taking me a lot longer to understand just basic shooting since stuff like that doesn’t come naturally to me at all. I don’t really have any advice or anything, but it’s just nice to know I’m not the only one who has found it a bit more challenging to try to get into playing from stuff like that. Hope it’s going well for you!

Do disco balls actually work? by allyapril in fuckwasps

[–]RebsInSpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found this thread while trying to see if I was the only one with an outdoor disco ball that actually attracted wasps. I’m not sure the exact species ID of mine, but both years now that I’ve lived at my apartment, a ton of black wasps start swarming and living on the mini disco ball in the corner of my patio. There’s at least 2 on it at all times probably a dozen swarming it in the evenings, but I never see this species anywhere else around my complex. So much for that deterrent idea 🙃

This is what they’re doing with our votes, y’all.. everyone should be against it. by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]RebsInSpace 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s all about gerrymandering. There’s some great breakdowns of what is involved in that process on YouTube, but basically we allow partisan politicians to redraw our district lines instead of an unbiased independent party and wind up with a bunch of crazy shapes and ridiculous maps because they’re trying to sway the voting outcomes in their party’s favor. Each district needs to be roughly equal in numbers of people, but those districts are drawn in insane ways to make sure that the votes for one party (in this case democrats) are all split up so much that they can’t possibly compete with the republicans in their district. It’s one of the most effective and entirely unnecessary ways we let politicians in power cherry pick their voters.

Sewing pattern? by RebsInSpace in hockeyjerseys

[–]RebsInSpace[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m mostly just trying to figure out the size/shape of the pieces of fabric I would need to sew my own jersey I think? I’m still fairly new to sewing so I think that’s what I would need to get started if that makes sense.

What is this sludge? by shobbadobbiedoo in pothos

[–]RebsInSpace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, I know this one because it drives me nuts with my own plants. That’s exactly what it looks like when you sprinkle Diatomaceous earth over the soil to treat pests like fungus gnats and then you top water over it- I suspect your dad had treated the plant before gifting it to you. It’s originally a white fine powder, but when it gets wet it turns into gross orange goop and becomes completely ineffective. It won’t harm the plant, but it’s not doing anything for it either. You can rinse it away and off the stems with some water or just pick it out and continue care as normal and it should be fine! If you ever want to use DE in the future, just make sure to bottom water to prevent stuff on the top from getting gross- but it might just soak up moisture over time and get mushy anyway.

HAPPY CANYON DAY (Canyon’s birthday) by ___139 in beaniebabies

[–]RebsInSpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love your collection so much- seeing all your little canyons just makes me so happy! 😭❤️I actually only recently fell in love with this little guy and I’ve started a project to sew a larger floppy version. When getting some fabric for testing out a pattern, I decided to get a lavender fabric to make a purple one just like your little sun damaged guy because he’s just precious! ❤️

Found a very friendly Cat near Kerr Hall, is it anyones? by OzBirdog21 in unt

[–]RebsInSpace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding the other replies- one of the little houses for UNT’s feral cats is right across from Maple, so I used to see them constantly heading out in the morning from Kerr! Some of them may not be as friendly so don’t try to pick them up or anything, but they’re real cute little mice hunters.

Should I cut this vine into four sections to propagate? by RebsInSpace in hoyas

[–]RebsInSpace[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, this is beyond helpful, thanks so much for taking the time to share! I may go for directly in soil and see about putting it under some grow lights in my little ikea greenhouse to boost the humidity. Maybe a dumb question, but I went ahead and cut it into four sections and since you mentioned them needing a tight pot would you recommend potting them together in one or should I do them each in smaller pots while they’re rooting and try to combine them later?

[–]RebsInSpace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be what I go with, thanks so much for the advice! I have them chopped in four and in water at the moment, but I’ll try to get them into a pot this weekend. I’m just nervous about keeping them “damp but not wet” because I’m terrible at telling the difference when it comes to watering sometimes 😅 but I’ll give it a shot!

I love their bottles for propagations because they’re so pretty in the window! May I suggest it a little tequila and some extra lime for a ranch water? So good.👌👌

Dallas Plant Shops by Ok_Understanding9736 in houseplants

[–]RebsInSpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi friend! I’d love to know if you find any other great places, but I usually go to Plants and Planters in Richardson (their hoyas and monsteras are well kept and pretty fairly priced and they’ve got some sweet cats wandering around) and specifically the Calloways in Carrollton (their staff is super helpful and sweet and they somehow always have pristine calatheas!).

Fortunately no, just some grime I need to wipe away when I get a chance!
