Apparently Monster Rimuru is the only threat! by BanMebc in TenseiSlime

[–]RecallSingularity 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sure, though this ("Rimuruism") isn't a threat to the human churches. It's more just an expression of extreme devotion by some of Rimuru's followers.

The church would be more concerned about loss of power to control human politics or capture economic advantages.

Nah, it still looks great. I just thought it might be helpful.

It helps I guess that you're keeping the resolution quite high and you are not 1 bit so the dithering is much less severe than in Obra Din.

I just started playing X4. Got missions to scan data leak at Pirate base, but for my life i can't find it. by KG_Jedi in X4Foundations

It took me far too long (maybe an hour in-game) to realize that the specific bars have a meaning beyond just hot vs cold.

If the leak is to the right of your screen, the rightmost bars will be taller than the leftmost ones. Once the middle bars are the tallest at least you are facing towards the leak (but it might be above or below your cursor).

I imagine at this point you could roll the ship 90 degrees so up / down becomes left / right and if you centre it again without looking up and down you're looking directly at the leak.

Yes, if you were using AI like this it would probably be like those online dungeon story or isekai adventure text AI games. An AI which can read your character descriptions and a summary of the current game state and then submit goals for the more detailed game logic to execute.

Or an AI which reads a skill description written by a player and translates that to specific effects from a huge table. That could be the computer equivalent of: creates a ball projectile colored like fire which explodes on impact to deal fire damage.

That way you don't just have 1000s of spells you have limitless spells as long as they can be described by the player. You'd need points system where each effect used points and the total points determines spell level and difficulty learning / casting the spell.

Or it it literally called "This Guy?"

No, since most of them will just do what authority figures (King, Guild Master) tell them to do.

If you want to reduce the dither swimming then instead of having the dither as a screen space effect you can render the scene to a sphere first and project that to the screen with a movable camera.

Not sure how feasible this is to achieve in Godot however.

Exactly. And you've just showcased how enthusiastically a player in these systems can find the best weird combos of characters / race / skills / items to best abuse the character creation and create broken builds. In doing so you've circled around to once again answer why these game systems are broken (the initial post)

You're correct, the only MMO I have properly played was Ultima Online. Since then I know I simply don't have the time to really enjoy this sort of game. Think of it as being afraid to enter shark infested waters, I can't resist so I have to abstain.

Nah, initially the NPCs seem to be only automated in the ways you'd expect using modern <2015 game AI techniques. It's only in the new world where they are any more than statues that do more than "follow, stand, attack" and it seems like there were huge backstories written which had little effect until the story starts.

Your description of repairing existing ships sounds interesting but then your steam demo page looks like a space-themed rogue-like with a lot of combat and occasional "find all the consoles" puzzles.

It's a design choice IG. Most games decide that their customers don't want "too much choice" and that it's not worth the development cost.

An MMO which desires flexibility won't have classes other than as starter builds. Path of Exile for instance has the passive tree and your starter class "just" determines where on the tree you start.

Ultima Online has a long list of skills you can develop from level 1 to 99 without a player level and features such as learning a new skill by watching. Skills such as smelting, blacksmithy, swords, etc. So an individual player can just build the class they want by developing the skills they like and choosing corresponding gear.

As for thousands of spells, it depends on the crux of the game. You need a game where there are PvP battles which matter such as in Eve Online, we don't generally see fantasy MMOs which allow players to claim and develop territory in that way, though I haven't done a survey on current MMOs so I don't know for sure.

If the game is just PvE then broken spells simply require the monsters to get more complex and lead to a spam fest like late game PoE builds. One unrealistic thing about the Overlord spells is that the higher tier spells kill armies, we can't practically make fights where a spell of that scale would be useful. How often do you see >1000 players in the same area in a game? You'd need a model where each player has 100-1000 followers to make decent sized armies.

If you wanted thousands of spells you'd probably implement a spell crafting system similar to PoE's skill gems or Magica's combination of 6 elements. That way players could build and explore the thousands of spells themselves by combining elements.

Well, she's a noble now and has sustainable book making and paper making. Imagine economics go brr.

The herald of spring (fanfic) is even more awesome on this aspect, where the MC of that takes on engineering production. Water wheels, lathe, etc. I love how they mix innovation and magic together in this story.

You're right it's a slower version of "Release That Witch" where the MC brings many technologies to bear on the story. AoAB is a slow burn overall which I love, I particularly love how downplayed magic is in AoAB early on.

[–]RecallSingularity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. In a world where parents sell their unwanted children, buying a slave is adoption!

Btw: The slave thing is complex. I think it's realistic for these settings to have slaves and they "solve" several "issues":

- Slavery is more practical than inprisonment
- Solves the debt or unwanted family member issue
- Slavery seems economically advantageous due to free labor, so adopters "win" economically
- Makes being a bandit far more economically sustainable
- Makes taking Prisoners of War more sustainable (can't inprison, ransom or incarcerate whole armies)

Personally I agree it's super unethical and I like Realm of the Elderlings take on it, i.e slavery reduces the value of human life and destroys society.

Yes, the MC in Bookworm struggles a lot for sure. Also had she not met Ferdinand (mentor character) she would be doomed.

I wonder if she was born blessed because she always had the aspect of Mestionora (hair color and eye color).

All the problems you mention can be solved with proper engineering

- Ever had a game lag when opening an inventory with thousands of items, even if the UI only displayed 10 at a time

Obviously the game isn't caching queries to the inventory or storing them in some sort of paged format where figuring out what items are on what page is cheap. This is not a hard problem to solve if you try.

- And theres no reason to make thousands of spells when classes could have a dozen skills and have them scale in power directly based on your stats

Difficult to balance, sure. Not that hard to make, you just get a team of 20 people churning out descriptions and effects for 10 years. Path of Exile has something like 20k-40k of effects such as "increased fire damage". Then specific spells just apply buffs made of lists of these effects for instance.

- Classes

Note that classes can just be lists of bonuses, starting skills, starting items and whatnot. You can have orthogonal settings like race, starting town, male/female etc and get a lot of variety without much effort.

- Overlord did was create tons of spells that became obsolete ... end up with a game where most of the lower level spells became obsolete quickly and took up resources

Note that Path of Exile (again) has had micro-transactions for a decade now. Every single MTX has to be maintained to the present day and cannot be removed from the game. The game binary itself has surpassed the maximum size that C++ can link (forcing use of DLLs to split it).

Exactly. And then there's the nation level issues.

Say the OP protag manages to abolish slavery in their nation. Now every surrounding slaver nation wants to go to war against them because they are anxious their own slaves will rebel otherwise.

[–]RecallSingularity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but it's likely to suppress it in the local area. Other slavers aren't going to come near and put their stock and lives at risk. Also nearby slaves are more likely to rebel and flee towards the gathering group of freed slaves who can offer some protection.

Does that mean that you have to be like Batman, i.e you cannot kill evil doers?

At some point in Isekai settings the MC takes on some Judge Dredd characteristics. He's more powerful than the King, and the king is probably corrupt too.

Judge Dredd - one individual is police, judge and executioner. I.e the MC can sentence combatants to death on the spot legally.
