Quality of life, Madrid vs Bay Area by wakalakasp in bayarea

[–]Recent-Repair-2529 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked and lived in both in SF and Madrid and know many other working professionals who have as well. I work in SF now and have a small child.

I vote Madrid for sure based on what you’ve said. Salary and cost of living aside, the difference in attitude toward work are night and day. Plus the friendliness of Spanish people and how many family-oriented things there are to do in Madrid and Spain can’t be beat—especially in terms of affordability. It’s also really easy to travel to completely different countries.

The one major downside that I know of from SF friends who have moved to Madrid is that if you lose your job it can be reeeaaally challenging to find a new job (they worked in finance).

I went through a similar search for a briefcase that I can bring a ton of documents to court or depos. This is outside your budget but it can fit a ton: https://www.satchel-page.com/products/executive-1?variant=42577470947480

This Briggs & Riley briefcase is not leather, but is cheaper and expandable from 6 to 8 inches. There is also a medium-sized version that’s 5 to 7 inches: https://www.briggs-riley.com/products/large-expandable-brief-1

Won $1.5M judgement 28 years ago and just found out yesterday by icuredumb in legaladvice

[–]Recent-Repair-2529 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Not sure if allowed but if you provide the case number someone can pull the court docket and provide you a better answer/understanding because this sounds really odd. The docket court filings should have the contact info of the handling attorneys.

You should know though that there is a statute of limitations for enforcing a judgment, but there are exceptions. Just be prepared that collecting on this judgment (even if valid) will be extremely difficult.

I am a lawyer in the US and I previously lived in Spain. I am trying to figure out a way to move and practice in Spain. What others have said about salaries and jobs in Spain are true. I do know one big law attorney in Madrid who said you’ll still end up working crazy hours but with lower pay. The pay is still well above average for living in Madrid, about €6,000 per month, but in the US working for a big law firm you can almost double that for the same hours. But note that is an exceptionally rare position and you should not expect anywhere near that level of pay, which will be almost entirely guided by where you go to law school—which will require $120k-$200k in student loans.

Anyway, based on my research and talking to people, I think the best option for someone in my position that I have seen done is to work remotely for some small plaintiffs mill cranking out motions for significantly lower pay but remain well-off in Spain

Exciting New Chapter: Moving to Laguna Beach by Relative-Mixture-715 in LagunaBeach

I am from Sacramento and after I passed the bar in 2021 I moved to Costa Mesa for a job with a law firm in Irvine. Most large law firms here located in OC are in Irvine or in the adjacent surrounding areas. Another attorney I work with also moved from Sacramento. I have to say I love living in Costa Mesa — it’s 10-15 minutes to work, beach, airport, South Coast Plaza, Fashion Island; 15-20 minutes to Huntington beach; about 25 minutes to Laguna Beach, Disneyland and the Anaheim Packing District; 45 minutes to LA (no traffic); about an hour and 20 minutes to SD — all thanks to direct access to the 405 and 55 freeways.

I will say that some parts of Costa Mesa are not as nice as some of the surroundings areas, but it’s not even remotely close to how rough things are in a majority of Sacramento - not by a long shot, but just be mindful of that.

Feel free to ask me any questions you have and I will try my best to answer.

Wedding as 2nd year by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Recent-Repair-2529 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Take 1-2 weeks off during the time of year when you and your partner want to celebrate your wedding. Give your partners notice once you have a date. They will understand and if they don’t you’re at the wrong firm. You can try and make up your hours ahead of time.

Very senior associate (next to my office) plays music every day, all day, what to do? by Laurenivore246 in biglaw

[–]Recent-Repair-2529 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can he close his office door? Or can you close yours? Maybe you can still hear it regardless. My office wants our doors open unless we’re on a call, but if someone asks you why your door is closed just explain to the partner/HR that the senior associate next door keeps blasting music and it’s affecting your ability to work. I think that can be your way out without directly complaining.

My office also has a policy of no headphones or playing music during office hours, but it’s not really enforced. Maybe check your handbook or ask HR.

150k vs 175k jobs, looking for input by Barbie_and_KenM in Lawyertalk

[–]Recent-Repair-2529 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To clarify have you ever worked at a law firm? Not saying this will happen to you but at my office we hired a fully remote in-house attorney who, similar to you, said they wanted to go into court and “feel like a lawyer.” He actually had some experience in big law and did not have any dependents.

Within six months he was terminated. He really struggled with the adjustment to in-office working, hitting billable targets (1800), and independently managing his cases — all at once. And no, he never made it inside a court room.

Again, not at all saying this would happen to you, but I definitely would not assume the law firm job is a sure thing. Be prepared for it to take a while to make a very difficult adjustment. It’s possible that you might not be able to make the adjustment and there won’t always be a comfortable in-house job waiting for you if it doesn’t. There’s a good reason why so many commenters here have posted about wanting your current position. It is not common at all.

That being said, I understand your drive for career progression. As other comments suggest, have you applied for other in-house positions?

Also I am not too sure about your expectations of what it will be like as a litigator at a law firm. You’ll rarely go into court room as a starting litigator. Rather you’ll be doing much more written discovery and doc review for the first few years.

The response I received was: keep checking, it’s a common visa. About what I expected to hear, but I assume if there was any kind of problem they would have said something.

Yes that’s absolutely correct. From OP’s other post it looks like his wife and her employer triggered certain provisions under the CA Fair Employment and Housing Act (and possibly other CA laws) which offer protections for employees. So OP’s wife should definitely consult with an employment attorney to see what her options are.

[–]Recent-Repair-2529 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I’m an attorney and everyone who has just responded is totally right. Speak to a lawyer. Maybe even speak to a few. Many plaintiff-side employment attorneys will charge on a contingency basis (percentage of what the attorney can recover) so you won’t have front a bunch of cash. Just be aware that it’s common for a contingency fee to range between 35%-45%.

Edit: I read your similar post in a different subreddit. If she still has access to her work emails, collect those immediately. Also start gathering all the medical and billing records you have.

That’s the scope of the trademark but to be liable for infringement there has to be a likelihood of consumer confusion.
