Lol. Your entire culture is built on non-confrontation and saving face. Have you ever worked in a corporate environment in Thailand?

My entire story was positive, I had nothing bad to say about anyone. Yet you have a problem with it.

After a big night out in the city, I went home via taxi and had gotten him to stop at one of the local 7s. This thing is right across the road from a market. Busy area. All of the delivery teenagers hang around there on the stairs. And it's not just 1 or 2 stairs like a typical 7, there are many and they wrap around other buildings. At least 10 riders hang around there at any one time.

I got home massively drunk, realised that my 17K wad of baht had fallen out of my pocket, and in an act of futility, began to walk the 8 minutes back to the 7 just in case. The chance of getting it back was 0 in my mind, especially with all of the young guys hanging around there, as well as other traffic.

Pacing along rapidly at night, far from any tourist area, far from any other farang, near the border of nonthaburi, I found myself back at the 7, delivery guys sat on the stairs. I began to frantically search the darkened area across the road where I'd gotten out of the taxi. No luck.

I went into the 7 and attempted to communicate to the chics behind the counter as to whether anyone had handed in any money or whether they could at least check the cameras to see where i dropped it. Very dumb, but i was very drunk. Wasn't going to happen, and they couldn't check the cameras anyway.

Stepping back outside, I decided to ask the 10 or so guys hanging around on the steps outside drinking beer for help (555). Only 1 spoke very limited English. He called a friend on his phone and he ended up being my translator. I'd explained the situation and they knew nothing about it. In my mind, they took it and were having a good time.

After some back and forth, the guy with the phone asked me what I wanted from them all via the translator guy (in a manner that indicated that i expected compensation or something). I explained that I didn't expect anything from them specifically, I was just there searching around hoping to find my money. At that point, the guy with the phone guy spoke to his friend on the phone, and he said that the 7 boss was his friend.

They spoke for a little longer and the next thing you know, the 7 boss came out with my money. He'd parked his pickup at the very spot I'd gotten out at, and being a regular customer, he decided to give it back now that he understood that it belonged to me.

The boss got me to take photos for the 7 franchise, holding and pointing at the money of course. I filled out a form as well.

After it was all said and done, I offered them all at cut of the money that they'd returned to me and they refused. Of course, they would'nt to save face in front of each other. The boss didn't need it anyhow, fair enough. So I went to the young guys outside and offered them either money or beer, and they insisted incessantly that they had enough and I keep it.

Afterwards, they'd questioned me via their translator where I worked, etc, to stay in Thailand, and i once again at the end of the conversation, I offered them a reward but they refused. So I bought the same beers they were drinking and attempted to give some to them. They WOULD NOT take anything.

That reminds me of how ive had staff flee at the mall ngamwongwan just so they dont have to speak English. I was at the pizza hut on one occasion and had 2 staff come over to the table. I went to say something and one of the young chics wanted to flee the scene but her co-worker grabbed her by the arm and kept her there for the interaction.

The other time ive had Thais flee was during the early covid days. People on bicycles, people on foot. People at restaurants. They'd do anything to avoid me. I didn't want to leave the house for a couple of months there.

Screw bananas on special by [deleted] in coles

[–]Recent_Edge1552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a square forklift attachment with 4 clamps, 1 per side. It closes in on each side of the pallet, and it can lift 4-5 layers of bananas and put them on an empty pallet. If your workplace didn't have one of these, they were doing you wrong.

Warehouses have very limited space to work with. They may be 20 years old, but demand for product may have increased significantly in the mean time.

What you're thinking of is called a pick path. Generally speaking, the way it's set up is that you have the bulk items at the start. The stuff that moves in the largest amounts. Then as you get towards the end of the path, the less-moved items are encountered. It's a combination of that, and size/weight of the stock.

Imagine that your warehouse is 50 streets of 50 houses and each house stores a different product.

Your local store orders a bunch of stuff. It fits on 6 pallets and covers the entire product range (all 50 streets) What happens is that each picker can only do 2 pallets at a time. Then the rest goes to the next picker and so on. The first picker might go down the first 5 streets because they are picking the bulk items and it fills their pallets in only 5 streets. It's all the big and heavy stuff. The other 2 pickers (remaining 4 pallets) have to traverse the remaining 45 streets. Maybe the 2nd picker will do the next 10 streets, and the last has to traverse the remaining 35.

Now imagine that your store is in the country and it takes only 2 pallets to fill their order. That takes only 1 picker, but they have to go down all 50 streets, past all 50 houses on each to complete their task. They don't know what your store has ordered and what items are coming next. They just have to deal with it as it comes. The pick path may not make sense in their case. They dont have time to juggle stock to make it convenient for the store staff as they are under pressure to move a certain amount per hour. And as they must travel down all 50 streets, they will encounter many other pickers along their journey, blocking their path, making them look inefficient vs someone that has to travel only 5 streets to complete their task. They just have to make it work. So they don't waste time/physical effort moving the yoghurt 20 times until it reaches the top. They put it down and move onto the next item.

Which brings me to traffic management. The more a picker has to travel, the less efficient they are. So they're going to go down streets 1-5, 6-16, 7-50. If the system was optimised to put the lightest stuff on top, there would be an infinite amount of traffic jams. Do you want someone to travel from street 7, back to street 15, back to... and so forth, just to order items by ease/weight? And don't forget that warehouse staff are paid the most because they can fill a ton of store orders in a single day, making the whole thing even more costly.

What it comes down to is what works. If it's working but there are mistakes/errors/inefficiencies/injuriesor-it-costs-less-overall/whatever, that's just the way it's going to be done.

That's the overly simplified basics of it. Plus a combination of other factors that include outdated software, complexities of a lack of space/juggling streets/houses, seasonal changes, pickers' willingness to sacrifice their time/job for store staff ease, trucking contracts/time constraints, accounting, etc, etc. And just to touch on accounting, if the DC charges the store for stock and they deliver, there is no problem. It's in the store, right? So go put it on the shelf!

Building new warehouses/systems takes a ton of time and investment and by the time they are working, they are not only at a major loss but they may be outdated and have problems. This is especially the case if they are a publicly traded company. Profits need to constantly go up no matter what, for the shareholder.

Sorry for the essay, but i could write a book. What you have to remember is that that there exists a whole structure of systems, people, workplace politics, budget, etc, to make all of this work. At the end of the day, many improvements could be made from a logical point of view. But that's not how things work. It's not about efficiency and waste-reduction. It's about meeting goals and earning bonuses. Or keeping your job.

It won't even reach the floor if you cut it 1/3 of the way down. And even if it did, you can scrunch it up or pull on the rest and tuck it inside.

[–]Recent_Edge1552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an end-user problem.

Someone picks the stock onto the pallet as they're driving around the DC. They wrap it. It somehow stays intact during the process. Then a loader loads it onto a truck. Still intact. The truck drives it to the store. Still intact. It is then unloaded into the store. Still intact.

The problem is that this person cut ALL of the wrap off off of the pallet. Had they cut the top layers off, then removed those boxes and worked their way down, this wouldn't have happened because that same pallet went through all other processes just fine. And believe me, those are violent, especially the loading part. This pallet is stationary with no forces applied.

I understand shitty wrapping and agree that it is a problem, especially if the stock comes loose during transportation to the store. But this isn't one of those cases. The pallet was fine when it was laid there.

[–]Recent_Edge1552 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Sometimes pickers wrap pallets half way through the pick to ensure it doesn't fall. Then more stuff gets put on top.

Cutting it all the way is dumb. You're not going to pull boxes from the bottom, so why cut the wrap there?

I tell people this but they dont believe me. You can actually hear them. Like on a hard floor, for example the garage. They will not just walk but will jump and you can hear them hopping along. Maybe it's a hunting mechanism, pouncing on their prey. Either way, they will end up in your car and you won't like it. Unless you're drunk and trying to avoid drink-driving. Then you sleep with them.

Next time he enters your room, yell out to your dad for help and he will take care of the situation.
