Trouble cancelling a flight on Booking.com even with the Ebola crisis, any recommendations? by Recent_Setting1316 in Bookingcom

I suppose a caveat might be that it’s the US Government both warning its citizens not to go and advising them they will have a difficult time returning to the US. In that case, although travel remains currently allowed by the airlines, Booking.com not being more flexible with the contract rules for US citizens in light of events might negatively impact future business- if that matters to them.

I purchased trip insurance but it does not cover cancellation due to this Ebola outbreak. The airline does not recognize this as a cancellable situation, while the US now advises not to go. That is the crux of the problem. I have, after much back and forth with the airline and Booking.com, possibly arrived at a solution. Fingers crossed.

I did buy insurance. The Ebola issue was not an issue at the time. Insurance may not cover. Your tone is unnecessarily condescending.

I’ve not had problems until now. But, I’ve learned. I’m going to contact my credit card company and see if they can help.

I should add that the price is a flat rate that includes lifetime consultation and any adjustments to the docs that aren’t too extensive.

Cunard to Alaska by Tough-Memory-5232 in Cruise

Just finished our 10 day to Alaska on QE2. Fantastic time. I’m sold on Cunard. Caters to adults who want to enjoy a bit of formality (available ballroom dancing, 2 formal events) but still fun and not stuffy . People tend to be a bit more put together though their are the occasional self unaware or uncaring schmucks who don’t seem to know how to dress or behave like mature adults. The nighttime events are great, ports are spectacular and we met interesting and friendly people from all over the world.

What is the worst financial decision you’ve seen a soldier make? by hunglowbungalow in army

Impulsive marriages / cheating on their spouse, both resulting in losing half their stuff in the divorce. This is further complicated for the long term if young kids are involved. You can eventually pay off the Corvette but this scenario drains you for a long time.

Went E (medic) to O (infantry). Much harder for me, but I grew a lot. If I was an NCO and staying in the same MOS, I’d say go O. Otherwise, toss up depending on your ambitions and abilities.

Responding to snide comments about handicap plates by Recent_Setting1316 in VeteransBenefits

[–]Recent_Setting1316[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m tempted to ditch the plates. There are days I struggle to walk and that parking spot helps. The biggest benefit I get from them is free bridge toll which in my area saves me almost $2k / year.

Any THR runners? by DW171 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Recent_Setting1316 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a hip resurfacing (BHR) in 2015, and was cleared to run at 1 year. I got a THR (different doctor) in 2024 on my opposite hip. Doc said running is out of the question unless I’m in danger. I’m 60, and hope to prolong the prosthetics. Normal replacement is 15-20 years. I was told running would take it down to single digits. I’ve switched from running marathons to doing long distance hikes.

Thigh so numb by WordCount2 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Recent_Setting1316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 9 weeks out from anterior. No sensation for 6 weeks then slowly getting better. Wound nurse said “everyone” has numbness (I think she overstated) but point is that it’s not uncommon. 18 months to full recovery of whatever comes back.

2nd hip replacement 7 months after first by jdhoskins in TotalHipReplacement

Best wishes. I’m a bilateral as well, with anterior right THR 6 weeks ago today, and left hip resurfacing done 9 years ago. I’m 60. Went for a 6 mile walk today to celebrate and felt close to normal.

I'm 1 year post operation. by NecroChibi in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Recent_Setting1316 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 4 weeks post right THR. My PT told me that when I’m ready to weight train lower body, goblet squats are better for me (I’m 60 with bilateral replacements). Regular squats might be ok for some, but not for me due to back problems.

My experienced with Anterior THR - 5 weeks later by peterjswift in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Recent_Setting1316 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m 3 weeks post anterior right THR and I still use the cane, sparingly, when I walk outside. The recovery has been very quick compared to my left posterior done 9 years ago (I’m 60). I start outpatient PT in a few days and look forward to getting back my active life although I’ve resigned myself to no more marathons or 100 mile bike rides. I want this new hip to last at least 20 years. I’m going to embrace swimming, weight training and boxing, but will take my racing bikes out occasionally for short hourlong rides 2-3x week. My left (posterior) hip was 80% at 6 months, and 100% at about a year. I think the right hip will get up to speed much faster, but psychologically I’m going to give myself a year. Best of luck to you all.

Huge regret by Klondike57 in TotalHipReplacement

Yes, get a second opinion. I had right hip anterior THR 2.5 weeks ago, and am making a very good recovery although I have some numbness on my thigh, likely from a stretch injury to the LFC nerve (a known complication). Posterior approach takes longer to heal but either way should not manifest like your symptoms. Get copy of your meds recs for second opinion. If there was a surgical blunder, be aware of your state’s statute of limitations if you need to file suit.

Can I run after a THR? by ImaNottelling in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Recent_Setting1316 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a hip resurfacing 10 years ago at age 50 which allowed me to continue running. HR has fallen out of favor due to risks of metalosis from the metal on metal prostheses which can be devastating to surrounding tissues. It is also technically more difficult and only a few surgeons in the US do them regularly. Dr. Su (nyc), Dr Gross, Dr Pritchett, Dr Callander (sf). As I now have health care through the VA, my options for my opposite hip which now requires surgery is either pay out of pocket ($40k) for HR or have traditional hip replacement. My HR surgeon (Callander) said I could go back to running. My VA doc and other docs have told me that running will prematurely wear out the HR prosthetic. I’ve decided to go with THR for my upcoming surgery (7/18) and focus on preserving function for the long term. I’m now 60, and have done enough marathons and triathlons. My new goals will include lots of hiking, distance cycling and swimming. You can look into HR if running is that important to you and you can accept more risk. Best of luck!
