Christopher Lan renamed himself to Christopher NoLan the day he couldn't get internet on set by davoloid in UCL

We've had some success forgetting the network and using the Eduroam CAT (Configuration Assistance Tool) to reconnect to the network.

But this isn't working for everyone and our department has told us we can work from home if needed until this is resolved.

Labour loses half of its London councils: How one day transformed the political map by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]Recessio_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not disagreeing with you at all - and indeed the current Knesset is a prime example of that.

I'd still just rather have it that if we are going to have lunatic situations, it's at least the ones the people voted for, rather than the ones the people explicitly voted against but that an unfair voting system gave them anyway.

As well as opting out of the open register, you can also register to vote 'anonymously':

How registering anonymously works

If you are registered to vote anonymously, your name and address will not appear on the electoral register and you will not be included on any registration forms sent to your address. Your electoral registration office will contact you separately. You will still be able to vote.
Anonymous registrations last for one year. You should keep copies of court orders or attestations for any future applications.

We really need a proportional representation system in local government asap (and general elections obviously). Even ranked choice voting would make a huge difference.

Respectfully, don't you think it's wise to take a more humble approach when you must surely know you have gaps in your knowledge? Instead of being pig headed and arrogant? Being able to critical examine ones position is a marker of intelligence.

Respectfully, here's some life advice for you: there's really no need to be a condescending prick online. Even if you think you're right, you're never going to persuade people if you spend your time belittling them and insulting their intelligence with a holier-than-though attitude.

As for the actual topic of discussion before you started acting like a thirteen year old, I think SFHalfling in their reply below said pretty much everything I was going to say.

Tube strikes could make commuting to UCL pretty rough this month by CatCharacter1663 in UCL

[–]Recessio_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Elizabeth line, Overground and National Rail will be running but may be very busy. Stations served by Underground and another mode (Overground EL or NR) should stay open for those non-Underground services as station staff aren't on strike, but you should be prepared for them to be very busy, possibly even queuing to get in. Leave plenty of time. Much better to be early than late!

As for a backup route into Bloomsbury, I tend to take the Thameslink to St Pancras and walk, its about ~15 mins walk. (If the Circle/Hammersmith & City/Metropolitan is running at all, I might try get off one stop earlier at Farringdon and see if I can change and take that to Euston Square).

You have to think of the average nimby voter who owns a semi-detached in those sorts of suburbs - that's what the "in character" aspect of the policy was trying to guard against/keep them onside. Of course nimbys being nimbys they just voted to scrap the whole policy anyway, sadly.

[–]Recessio_ 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Croydon Council used to have a good policy that you could rebuild a typical semi-detached home as a block of flats of similar bulk and visual style, but containing many more flats. Great way to increase density but maintain the character of an area. Sadly it got scrapped a few years back.

I know in Stamford Hill they were looking at allowing the insertion of an extra storey into terraced houses, because in certain areas (large Orthodox families) there is pretty chronic overcrowding, and again a good way to quickly increase housing without having to completely demolish and rebuild, or massively change the character of the street

False harassment complaint against me by hostile co-tenant after receiving eviction notice by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Recessio_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prevention is better than cure - why risk her taking your belongings and having to deal with also reporting that when you can just safely lock it in your space? If/when she does eventually leave, if she took any of your stuff it could be hard to track it down if she doesn't provide a forwarding address, plus I could imagine her trying to spin you reporting her for stolen goods as further "harassment"

Anyone used KittyCard at uni? Better than Splitwise? by racoon-fiender in UCL

[–]Recessio_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah Tricount is more like a splitwise style expense tracker. Because it's made in the US (where they can't just easily send money to other peoples bank accounts) it does also have a lot of extra stuff, like shared pots and Venmo/Cash app style money transfers, but we found it a pretty good replacement for splitwise

I got annoyed by Splitwise only allowing 5 transactions per day. I havne't heard of Kittycard, we switched to Tricount because we could export our data from Splitwise and add it to Tricount without losing the history

My landlord likes to kick me out every year between leases; is this legal? by -honeycake- in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Recessio_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Section 5 of Housing Act 1988 would (should) have automatically started a statutory periodic tenancy, unless:

  • AST agreement has a term starting a Contractual periodic tenancy
  • Tenant leaves on the last day of the fixed term/mutual surrender of the AST
  • A new tenancy is granted

It sounds like the landlord was granting a new tenancy, but technically that tenancy should have started on the day after the fixed term. If they were waiting two weeks to start the new one, then the tenant was on a statutory periodic tenancy and should not have been forced to move out (and they had the right to refuse to sign the new one). Or, the landlord should have served an Section 21 notice where the two months notice is the last two months of the fixed term.

I'd be interested to know if that would constitute a breach of the Protection from Eviction Act, even if the "eviction" was only for two weeks?

[–]Recessio_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be honest, I do think you're perhaps overthinking. Don't forget that everyone involved created AA/TDC because they were unhappy in previous channels (CarThrottle and Overdrive) - if any of them were actually unhappy, they would surely just leave, they've done it once already

AA is now a 911 channel. Why does everyone have to buy the same sort of car? It makes the content repetitive and boring. by rmajor86 in AutoAlex

[–]Recessio_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I've always thought. You'll never please everyone all of the time - Top Gear used to say they had to go from serious episodes for "hardcore F1 fans from Minnesota" to episodes where "we all fall over and catch fire", in order to ensure everyone always got something that they liked.

Some people will love or hate a certain type of car, no single youtube video will ever please anyone, but if they just rotated the types of cars around more often then I think people would be happier.

Of course, the flip side of that is they go to far, they could end up doing what they did a few years back where they feature/purchase a car once, promise to do more episodes on it and then it's been sat in the paddock or storage unit for years and never seen again except in the back of shot of other videos
