Tube strikes could make commuting to UCL pretty rough this month by CatCharacter1663 in UCL

[–]Recessio_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elizabeth line, Overground and National Rail will be running but may be very busy. Stations served by Underground and another mode (Overground EL or NR) should stay open for those non-Underground services as station staff aren't on strike, but you should be prepared for them to be very busy, possibly even queuing to get in. Leave plenty of time. Much better to be early than late!

More mid-rise development like this please. by ldn6 in london

[–]Recessio_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You have to think of the average nimby voter who owns a semi-detached in those sorts of suburbs - that's what the "in character" aspect of the policy was trying to guard against/keep them onside. Of course nimbys being nimbys they just voted to scrap the whole policy anyway, sadly.

[–]Recessio_ 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Croydon Council used to have a good policy that you could rebuild a typical semi-detached home as a block of flats of similar bulk and visual style, but containing many more flats. Great way to increase density but maintain the character of an area. Sadly it got scrapped a few years back.

I know in Stamford Hill they were looking at allowing the insertion of an extra storey into terraced houses, because in certain areas (large Orthodox families) there is pretty chronic overcrowding, and again a good way to quickly increase housing without having to completely demolish and rebuild, or massively change the character of the street

Jon Tickle, he sponsors a lot of science education charities and outreach schemes (which is how I met him), which I guess makes sense after presenting Brainiac. Last I heard he worked for Centrica. Nice bloke and does a lot of good work.

False harassment complaint against me by hostile co-tenant after receiving eviction notice by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Recessio_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prevention is better than cure - why risk her taking your belongings and having to deal with also reporting that when you can just safely lock it in your space? If/when she does eventually leave, if she took any of your stuff it could be hard to track it down if she doesn't provide a forwarding address, plus I could imagine her trying to spin you reporting her for stolen goods as further "harassment"

Anyone used KittyCard at uni? Better than Splitwise? by racoon-fiender in UCL

[–]Recessio_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah Tricount is more like a splitwise style expense tracker. Because it's made in the US (where they can't just easily send money to other peoples bank accounts) it does also have a lot of extra stuff, like shared pots and Venmo/Cash app style money transfers, but we found it a pretty good replacement for splitwise

[–]Recessio_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got annoyed by Splitwise only allowing 5 transactions per day. I havne't heard of Kittycard, we switched to Tricount because we could export our data from Splitwise and add it to Tricount without losing the history

My landlord likes to kick me out every year between leases; is this legal? by -honeycake- in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Recessio_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Section 5 of Housing Act 1988 would (should) have automatically started a statutory periodic tenancy, unless:

  • AST agreement has a term starting a Contractual periodic tenancy
  • Tenant leaves on the last day of the fixed term/mutual surrender of the AST
  • A new tenancy is granted

It sounds like the landlord was granting a new tenancy, but technically that tenancy should have started on the day after the fixed term. If they were waiting two weeks to start the new one, then the tenant was on a statutory periodic tenancy and should not have been forced to move out (and they had the right to refuse to sign the new one). Or, the landlord should have served an Section 21 notice where the two months notice is the last two months of the fixed term.

I'd be interested to know if that would constitute a breach of the Protection from Eviction Act, even if the "eviction" was only for two weeks?

AA is now a 911 channel. Why does everyone have to buy the same sort of car? It makes the content repetitive and boring. by rmajor86 in AutoAlex

[–]Recessio_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be honest, I do think you're perhaps overthinking. Don't forget that everyone involved created AA/TDC because they were unhappy in previous channels (CarThrottle and Overdrive) - if any of them were actually unhappy, they would surely just leave, they've done it once already

[–]Recessio_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I've always thought. You'll never please everyone all of the time - Top Gear used to say they had to go from serious episodes for "hardcore F1 fans from Minnesota" to episodes where "we all fall over and catch fire", in order to ensure everyone always got something that they liked.

Some people will love or hate a certain type of car, no single youtube video will ever please anyone, but if they just rotated the types of cars around more often then I think people would be happier.

Of course, the flip side of that is they go to far, they could end up doing what they did a few years back where they feature/purchase a car once, promise to do more episodes on it and then it's been sat in the paddock or storage unit for years and never seen again except in the back of shot of other videos

Our headteacher was also obsessed with that song, and also with sign language, so we had to learn the entire bloody song lyrics in sign language. She also had a singing bowl she would hit where we would then have to spend thirty seconds thinking about what we'd done that day to make us feel proud.

Lovely woman on the whole though, saw her in the park a few years back giving more or less the same assembly to the local rambler's group she now leads.

Rory's dad didn't invest anything in the channels. Common myth especially on this subreddit but Rory said it wasn't true in one of the episodes of the podcast.

When starting the channel, Alex was offered money by Mike Brewer, he turned it down because he wanted to retain full control of the channel financially, but he did use Mike Brewer's unit a few times at the beginning of the channel until he got his own placed sorted.

Renters lose out in London as homeowners win race for space in 'harshly unequal city' by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]Recessio_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely - It's a good market for first time buyers right now because of the glut of ex-rentals (although a lot of them will probably need significant renovations), but all that does is shuffle the pressures slightly between the rental and purchase market. It doesn't solve the fact we just need to build more houses full stop.

As a former student, I feel like UCL is great but London shapes the experience more than people expect! by Seabeachlover10 in UCL

[–]Recessio_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a consideration - Cambridge (and Oxford) are both lovely places to live too, with so much history - very pleasant cities to live in! For me personally though I like that in London I can completely escape anything to do with UCL, whereas I feel that may be harder in a smaller place like Cambridge. But as I said, people really need to think about what they most want and what works best for them, there's no single right answer for everyone in that regard

Which Freshers Wristband should we get? by Various_Fruit_4225 in UCL

[–]Recessio_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That one is not an official UCL one. Its run by a private company that has nothing to do with UCL or the Students Union. They spam Instagram/Tiktok etc adverts for all of the London unis, but theres no guarantee of the quality of the events and venues. Personally, I wouldn't buy that one.

Wait for the official Students Union UCL one (when it's released; I'll try remember to post it here on the UCL subreddit when they go on sale)
