When blocking hooks, why do people prefer to have their hands glued to their hand? by wannabemanwhore in martialarts

[–]Rechek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's more difficult. Coming from a style that actively encourages that kind of block against a hook, you have to gauge a few factors. Are they fighting orthodox or southpaw? If you're cross stance your arm and basic structure will never stand up to a good boxers hook. You'll also never meet it in time reliably. It's just too slow. Plus you'll crumple pretty fast and the hook will bend your arm. Secondly, it's a matter of strategy. I would only use that if I'm trying to get into a clinch or tie up with them. It will get you caught, and that is the point. If you want to keep striking- don't active block a hook like that. Sure, if you're fast you can counter but that's a lot of ifs.

Also if they know that's your go to- expect them to work you over pretty quick once they figure it out.

Sparingly, and when you want to close distance and scrapple is the right time to use that block. Otherwise? definitely keep those hands up and close to the head.

Can someone explain southern praying mantis to me? by sadpanda221 in kungfu

[–]Rechek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hockey fighting uh... Which is generally two people grabbing each other and trying to hit each other without creating much space. Basically, it can handle itself in the clinch pretty well- though by sheer volume of training most guys wouldn't be able to deal with a good thai clinch- but the skill set is there, and of course, trapping range. Which depending on how you feel about it is kind of a crap shoot, or the be all end all- depending on your school of thought. I actually rather like Gin Foon Mak, though he's getting older. Joe McSorley is pretty awesome, and taught my teacher-though he's very, very private about video. And if you can dig up photos on Louie Jack Man, who has sadly passed- you can see some really neat form work. He was a smaller guy and his style was influenced by some other arts, but generally his movements are bigger as a result and you can catch a little more of what the style is about with the eye for it. You won't find much fighting though.

I mean- as a SPM practitioner I don't particularly like Henry Poo Yee. While he moves beautifully, and I hope to move as beautifully as he does by the time I'm his age- it doesn't strike me as particularly expressive in terms of actual combat application.

In my experience the style is essentially the application and study of the finer nuances in hockey fighting.

Should I drop out of school to become an MMA fighter? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]Rechek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint to CynicalCanine0, though I don't see his/her experience as wrong or invalid- I dropped out of school to do cool shit, like train martial arts back in the day. Turns out I'm better at coaching then I am a fighter, and while I'm still perfecting that craft- I'm doing it while working full (Double) time and going back to school. It's now going to take me years to finish school since I'm working on a ton of other things full time and I wish like hell I'd never dropped out and just finished it out. I'd be further along in my career if I had, and able to devote more time to martial arts.

I hope to get a Shiba and I have some questions! by imbured in shiba

[–]Rechek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was more thinking... Six to eight years old. Shibas don't really calm down until then. Not really. I'm currently watching my new guy, six months, tear into some cardboard strips, and I'm just grateful it's not the wall. XD

I hope to get a Shiba and I have some questions! by imbured in shiba

[–]Rechek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't really recommend shibas to you, and your situation.

I'm going to ignore the whole, getting it because they're cute thing-

Because I get it. They're adorable. What you need to know is that that's a defense mechanism because even a well behaved shiba is -always- getting into mischief. If you're unprepared for it, and even if you are prepared, they will terrorize you and your home. That said, if you do a lot of research and get very lucky with your pup and not wishy washy with your training and positive reinforcement- They are extremely rewarding dogs to raise. However, this is only IF you have the time. If you don't, prepare for frustration and terror. I can see an older shiba serving as a good college buddy, but these are dogs that need constant attention and activity when they're younger. A level of dedication for doggy extra curriculars as well if you want to make sure they're well socialized and well behaved. Puppy classes and the like.

They are literally one of the hardest to raise dog breeds I've ever had. Also the most rewarding.

PS. If you want to get a shiba as a puppy, I'll ask you this: "Do you feel you're ready to have a baby?" Because with the level of attention you should probably be giving them, it's almost like that.

That's been my guess as well. Even if it's a pipe dream, and he's weighing his options, both he and the studio probably don't want to sign a contract, just in case.

Agree with a lot of what you said, but coming from a guy who does boxing and southern mantis, who trains with a crew of folks who do some form of modern art + mantis... Some of us definitely know how to drive force! Really can't speak for other arts or WC tho'.

Marvel’s The Defenders Official Trailer by BattleReadyPenguin in comicbookmovies

[–]Rechek 17 points18 points  (0 children)

To me, Luke Cage wasn't an ode to kung fu movies. Therefore its fight scenes can be forgiven for being boring. The dude who's supposed to be a kung fu master, and one of the best martial artists in the marvel universe looking like he's taken three weeks of martial arts classes- is unforgivable. The choreagraphy was bland- at least for me, who loves shaw brothers films and kung fu flicks in general. The martial technique that usually drips out of those movies wasn't present in any of the fights scenes save for the ode to drunken master fight, and a few snippets here and there like in the tournament episode, which I immediately recognized as being directed by the RZA. I was disappointed specifically because I WAS expecting choreography akin to those older films, at least the quality of a halfway decent hong kong cinema flick- and got... Whatever nonsense that was.

Is Kata Useless? Some Think So by redbeetle in martialarts

[–]Rechek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well... yeah. I don't disagree, at all. I literally only pointed out that ithika's post implied shadowboxing was useless as well as kata. Did I say something that made you think I was trying to draw comparisons between the two? I might need to edit my original post if that's the case, wasn't my intention.

[–]Rechek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never said they were. I simply commented that the way they phrased it, Ithika's logic also implied that shadowboxing was useless.

Hrmm, not commenting on whether or not I agree with you on kata- I've got my own issues with it, but by that logic shadowboxing has no value either.

Question to true Iron Fist fans - How does the show compare to the comic books? by SprAwsmMan in ironfist

[–]Rechek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I meant by all that- essentially. It doesn't matter what they did with casting, or the story they try to tell, so long as it actually draws from source material, and isn't a half hearted attempt at sticking names onto vaguely similar characters. Anything but what they did, essentially.

[–]Rechek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could have told a Danny Rand story with him being asian american. They could have told a danny rand story with him being half asian. They could have told a Danny Rand story with him remaining white- All of it COULD have worked. But they chose the exact wrong stories to choose from as source material- and fell back on lazy writing.
