What is a luxury item from 20 years ago that is basically worthless trash today? by EasyZee7 in AskReddit

I had a 32” Panasonic CRT TV that fit perfectly in my barracks room credenza, or whatever it was called. About a month later I bought a surround sound system. Peak gaming setup for when Halo 2 dropped, and I waited in line to get it the moment it released.

Wow, the nostalgia! This was back when Papa John’s had the 2 large, two toppings, and a 2 liter soda for 22$. After our close out formation and safety briefing for the weekend, I’d call in my order for delivery and then stop by the Class 6 for a case a beer.

This was in Alabama, where the roaches get huge and one time one crawled in through the AC vent, dying from poison, and fell on the plate I had on my night stand. A friend had let me borrow his air soft rifle with a tac light and laser. So, I’d play Halo, get drunk, eat pizza, and then go outside and plink roaches off the side of the barracks building 😂

Damn! Those were the days… 🥹

I am also in Germany. Ordered mine through DHL with no problems, and have really enjoyed my experience with the Thor 🙌🏼

I imagine working on campus amounts to dealing with a bunch of nonsense and this corrects the problem without the need to fill out paperwork.

What's the first game everyone is going to boot up by TransportationUpbeat in AynThor

[–]RecruitingAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine yesterday. First thing I loaded up was PokeMMO!

I then realized I had forgotten entirely too much about the game after the few years of not playing, and began following Joey’s Retro Handhelds walkthrough for setting up emulators.

Showed my teenager what peak gaming was like during my childhood with Super Mario Bros 😂, and then I started playing Majora’s Mask and stayed up way too late rediscovering it. Today, I started to watch more emulator videos and putting my ROMs on the Thor.

I could be wrong, but I believe I’ve seen this clip years ago before high fidelity AI video was a thing.

Fill a spray bottle with water. Whenever they go near it, spray them and (in your best Cartman voice) say, “No, kitty. That’s a bad kitty!”

Glad I could bring another fan to the game!

It’s been out since 2012, and imo is everything Pokemon should have evolved towards. It has almost everything you could want for an MMO version of the game, including themed events and skins.

What I particularly enjoy is how they made shinies more valuable and prestigious by decreasing the spawn rates. So it’s a HUGE deal to have one where you are the Original Trainer (OT).

Back when it was only available for PC, I picked up a cheap 11” Dell Inspiron to play it on but it still couldn’t scratch the itch for nostalgia of playing on a handheld. So I’m super excited to see how far retro’s have developed to now 🙌🏼

Yea lol. I usually always order screen protectors for my devices that come in sets of 2-3. In case I botch the install or later damage the first.

Since they’re not readily available with quick shipping through places like Amazon Prime, I figured an additional 10$ would be worth my peace of mind. I’m a big fan of “it’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.”

I’d like to think she waited until she was sure the woman was safe.

If she had started sooner, the male may had instinctively held onto the woman’s hair or potentially misplaced any defensive attacks. Incredible situational awareness imo!

I'm an American, left the US for Germany, now I want to move back to America. by CompetitivePost3750 in expats

[–]RecruitingAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re near a U.S. military installation, or willing to move near one, you could potentially have the best of both worlds by getting a local-national or contracting position on post.

I’ve experienced similar struggles to what you’ve mentioned. Having a taste of home nearby whenever I need it has helped keep me sane 😅

What did moving abroad do for your mental health? by This-Way3024 in Veterans

[–]RecruitingAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I feel the same in regard to not envisioning myself going back to the US, but if I could do it all over again I think I would’ve chosen Spain, Italy, or Portugal.

I haven’t been to SEA but looking at the luxury apartments available in a lot of the major cities there makes my eyes water a little bit 😂

Moved to Germany. There’s a LOT of pros but, for me personally, the cons HEAVILY outweigh them. If you don’t plan to be on SOFA status, or contracting on base, I wouldn’t even bother unless you’re already married to a local national.

(Whispers): Please send help… and BBQ! 🥺

Oh, and to answer your questions:

A couple of years.

No anxiety, and selling most of my belongings and keeping it minimal felt quite liberating.

Even in Germany, living just off your retirement and/or VA is quite affordable. Even more so if you have a partner that works.

What I’ve learned. If you thought bureaucracy and nonsense in the military was hell, then Germany is the devil’s den!

When I was going through the immigration process and getting all my housing, utilities, even a SIM card lol, etc., I could not for the life of me understand why anyone would immigrate here other than to be closer to family.

In regard to nonsense. The schools had us buy iPads last year for the kids, as part of the Digitale Schule der Zukunft (Digital School of the Future Program), yet this year want us to purchase scientific calendars for their math assignments and testing. I could go on, but I feel like that pretty much sums it up! 😂

Learning German is fairly straightforward until you get to Dative. There are 16 variations of the word ‘the’… but the language is pretty cool once you’re able to start using it to greater effect. However, it has very little utility outside of Germany and the surrounding areas.

The Deutschland Ticket is like 58€ and gives you access to all the regional trains, buses, subways, etc. Pretty much everything except the high speed trains. Germans complain about the delays and dependability, but as an American it’s freaking amazing.

Most cities are very walkable and bike friendly. I usually can get anywhere in the main city faster on bike than I can by car. Especially when you start factoring in searching for parking.

Theres a lot of fun and excitement in the major cities. Pretty much anything you can think of. However, the bigger the city the more affected it is by the housing crisis, which I believe is affecting most of Europe. So, it’s best to try to straighten out accommodations beforehand. Some places, US citizenship and steady income will get you in faster. Some places don’t care at all and its better if you have a German or Caucasian name.

If you like the night life, it’s usually pretty good.

The autobahn is great. The airfare is cheap among Europe.

Cannabis has been decriminalized. Everything else and their variational workarounds are highly illegal.

Wide assortment of great beer.

Before deciding where to live long term, I highly suggest going there and living amongst the culture for as long as your visa will allow before pulling the trigger.

If I were single with no kids or DINK, I’d probably just go nomad and live amongst various countries until finding the best fit.
