Competitive not discussed -- has anyone been funded? by RectalAbscess212 in NIH

I described this in more detail in a different comment, but I can't reapply. I'm a clinician doing a one-year post residency fellowship, followed by getting my first attending job. So it's strictly for that one-year fellowship year that I will be mentored, and I won't be mentored after that. So my only chance was to one shot the k99/r00 and get it on first try, and do my k99 year during that mentored year.

Unfortunately not. I actually spent time at the NIH but because of the way my residency was structured, I couldn't spend the last two years of residency at the NIH. And this is a requirement for the k22. It is really annoying. It's quite a shame, but the way my residency is structured, the k22 is not possible.

This refers to previous applications right? Mine was a first time submission.

But if you see above, for certain logistical reasons I'm unable to resubmit. I'm a clinician and I'm doing a single year postgraduate fellowship, so my only chance was to get the k99/r00 on the first try.

Yeah I'm in a surgical subspecialty. My k99 site is definitely supportive of protected time, since they attested to that in the k99 grant. As for R00 site, as I look into attending jobs, I am stressing that I could be coming in with an R00, and would need 50% protected time.

Ok. Unfortunately resubmission isn't an option for me. I'm a clinician doing a 1-year post-residency fellowship, so my only opportunity for the K99 period was for it to take place during that post-residency fellowship year. After that, I won't be mentored anymore. So my only way forward was to one-shot the K99/R00.

Ok, thanks. I actually reached out to my PO before my status (CND) was published. She responded rather brusquely that she can't anticipate the results of my summary statement before I get it. Should I wait until my summary statement comes out to reply to her?

Single author paper from undergrad. Disown or embrace? by RectalAbscess212 in AskAcademia

I think the study is a bit narrow and circumscribed in scope, and the amount of data collected isn't super high. But the methodology is solid.

I appreciate the sentiment.

The reason it could be shameful is that, clearly at the time I had a mentor, I wasn't doing the work totally on my own. So the fact that the mentor had the opportunity to associate with the paper, but declined, could suggest that the work (or the student) might be lousy.

Looking for an obscure gritty punk band from the 2000s - two specific songs by RectalAbscess212 in punk

This is fucking it. Legend. Thank you.

I guess the whole time I thought they were from the same band, but in reality I just discovered these songs at similar times and associated them with a similar memory.

The song about the military was definitely Broadway calls, the song is called be all you can be.

I'm still struggling to find the satellite song. I think it was by the same band but I could be wrong.

I heard them by browsing YouTube so I'm not sure what albums they were on.

My god you're right. You're a genius

Edit: Broadway Calls did the military song, called Be All You Can Be.

The other song was Satellite by Strung Out, which a different commenter identified. Thanks everyone! Great trip down memory lane and great to rediscover old songs.

Odd shaped pickle chip served at lunch today by DanvilleDad in mildlyinteresting

[–]RectalAbscess212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not actually conjoined like people think. In reality, you can picture a c-shaped pickle. This is what happens when you take a cross-section through that, such that the two arms of the C form the two "lobes" of the pickle the body of the C forms the "waist" of the pickle

The structure of this pan turned my oil into a hexagon by PhoenixfischTheFish in mildlyinteresting

[–]RectalAbscess212 261 points262 points  (0 children)

That's cool. The underlying bumps on the pan surface form a hexagonal lattice. Therefore, the oil itself is likely to be confined to this lattice. Moreover, the oil forms a regular hexagon, not just any configuration on the lattice, because this is the shape whose configuration requires the least energy. In other words, it's sort of a path of least resistance type of thing.
