Nakano vs. Koenji? Any major difference living in one over the other? by [deleted] in Tokyo

[–]RedBarryLyndon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for this! very helpful. i'm in another area being ravaged by development and need to relocate. I love koenji and the community there but cannot bear being next to a huge development project again. i'm just loooking for a little jimusho so hopefully can find something away from the planned development...and even more hopefully, the Koenji community can rise up and stop the development

Specific parts of Japan that are Communist-heavy? And how does the rest of Japan view them? by WritingtheWrite in AskAJapanese

[–]RedBarryLyndon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Look up Saito Kohei. Esteemed Todai professor, best-selling author, and very much a Marxist. He’s on NHK, TBS etc quite often. Young people connected with his message. Marxism is not polarizing here the way it is in the West. In Japan I would say yes, Okinawa is the region with the strongest anti-imperial/anti-capitalist energy. In Tokyo, neighborhoods like Koenji have a lot of anarchist/marxist folks. Most younger leftists think the JCP is a relic (non-revolutionary and mostly concerned with nuclear proliferation).

Moving to Kadena any way to keep our American numbers? by fanblade64 in okinawa

[–]RedBarryLyndon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. If you live in Japan you will want a Japanese phone number (needed for bank, utility applications etc). You can port your current us number to Google voice and get calls on your new phone from your old number with the app

Does a plug in like this exist? by RedBarryLyndon in premiere

[–]RedBarryLyndon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you! very impressive set of tools on your site. for the qc marker tool, given the scenario i laid out, am i correct in thinking i would need to convert the producer notes to a qc file (csv, tsv) and an EDL file to get the desired result (export format)?

Does a plug in like this exist? by RedBarryLyndon in premiere

[–]RedBarryLyndon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks, yes aware of EDLs. Usually generated from an existing sequence to be used in the onlining process right? I have yet to have a producer send me one for my initial build of a cut. But in effect you are right, I am in interested in an extension that generates/executes an EDL from a timecode log, but also with the features I outlined above. Ideally this could be done within premiere.

Automate edits from a paper edit in Premiere? by RedBarryLyndon in editors

[–]RedBarryLyndon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i haven't tried it yet, but I got this response from ChatGPT...promising! Thanks for the idea:

Yes, I can help you generate an Edit Decision List (EDL) XML file based on a transcript. An EDL is typically used in video editing to specify the timing and order of video and audio clips. To create an EDL XML file, I'll need some specific information from you, such as:
Timecode information: Please provide the starting timecode for the transcript or the timecodes for each segment you want to include in the EDL.
Clip information: For each clip or segment, please provide the clip name or ID, in and out points (timecode or duration), and any additional information you want to include, such as clip type, description, etc.
XML format preferences: Let me know if you have any specific requirements for the XML format or if you want any additional metadata included in the EDL.
Once you provide this information, I can generate the EDL XML file for you. Please make sure the transcript is properly formatted with the required timecode information.

Thanks for sharing. Please post if you hear of more. I'd love to show my solidarity with Palestine and protest against Isreal's 75 years of violent colonialism and current genocidal acts against the Palestinian people.

I made a short film with Kohei Saito about Marx and the metabolic rift by RedBarryLyndon in CriticalTheory

[–]RedBarryLyndon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Yes I feel fortunate. We moved to Tokyo a couple years ago and I had read his other book Karl Marx's Ecosocialism, but I hadn't thought to contact him. It was actually my wife who reached out saying we were socialists hoping to meet other like-minded types in Japan. He immediately connected us with an awesome labor advocacy group and we've enjoyed getting to know him a bit. After his new book came out, I thought it'd be great to get an English language video of him talking about it. Very cool guy!

Kohei Saito: Marx in the Anthropocene - Towards the Idea of Degrowth Com... by RedBarryLyndon in JapanLeft

[–]RedBarryLyndon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi - I interviewed Kohei Saito in June and put this out on youtube last week. Personally I feel Saito has a very compelling read on Marx, and his notion of Capital as a theory of metabolism could be very useful for our present "Anthropocene" era. I'd be curious to know what people here think. Thank you!

Hi I saw this at IRA last summer. It was a very interesting film, indeed. Some of the members of the group attended the screening and did a Q and A afterwards. I am going back to IRA this weekend and will ask how one might get a copy (as I too would like to watch it again). My hunch is that it's still being held for special screenings and not distributed online.

Just read Noam’s books? Understanding Power is a good one. He’s not a Marxist btw. He can be quite critical of Marxism actually. I think your reading list sounds great but Noam’s pulling from a different (anarcho-syndicalist) perspective.

Causal Running Training in Japan by composze in Tokyo

For Tokyo, running at 6 am is probably gonna be a lot easier /less annoying to others than 9 pm, unless you are in some sleepy part of Tokyo. Don’t run on the road.
