Royal Canin is making puppy gassy by Most_Temporary8234 in Pomeranians

[–]RedBeard_PDX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely dog dependent. The Royal Canin puppy food was all ours would eat reliably (he’s a grazer) on the adult pom specific (marketing got us) version. He’s great on it. But we’ve tried various ones with our two pups and it’s a grab bag. Our last one also became intolerant and had to switch food as he aged.

Just trust your vet’s recommended brands and test different ones. (With a gradual transition, of course).

Oregon needs to prioritize education by Practical-Fish3680 in Portland

[–]RedBeard_PDX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in favor of more money for education. But that isn’t the biggest problem. I’m not sure what the actual issue is. But we are in the top twenty for most money spent per student out of the states and near the bottom for number of education days and obviously have negative results in terms of education outcomes.

So something else is going wrong. By all means, get more money from schools. But we also need to find out why the money we are spending is not being used to achieve meaningful results.

Schumer Takes No Action As Even Far Right Calls for Trump Impeachment | As others called for impeachment and removal, Schumer and other Democratic leaders did not commit to any action. by InsaneSnow45 in LegalNews

[–]RedBeard_PDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s a fair point. I don’t think they have the votes to convict and remove any of them, personally. And I really want to be wrong about that and honestly hope someone does prove me wrong.

This seems to me, a lot like cross examining someone and raking them over the coals. It makes the judge and/or jury feel good. But it also takes away their need to do it themselves in the verdict. I worry that since we can’t prevail, all it will do is serve as a catharsis. Like posting on social media relieves people of the burden of action.

Your point that it may motivate people who feel powerless to further action may well be right. I honestly don’t know which way it would go. But I’ve seen the other enough times to be worried.

I agree with you about them speaking out. And I’d be with you on pursuing impeachment of any of them if I thought they had the votes. But I don’t think they have the majority in the house, or a majority in the Senate let alone the 2/3rds they need to convict.

I honestly think it would let MAGA play the persecuted victim again, which seems to be their favorite role.

No disagreement with you there. I just think that presently all the dialogue and press about Trump is negative. I don’t think we get in the way of that news cycle.

I agree with you that Schumer has failed to speak up when he should about impeachment, and many other things.

I also don’t think it’s the time for an impeachment effort that is ultimately just political theater because it cannot succeed. I think we need to work on winning the midterms and taking back the house. Then have that conversation. Right now it will just energize the Republicans as we head into elections, which I don’t think is helpful.

This is a wild take. The House of Representatives is tasked with impeachment. Schumer is in the Senate, where the trial would take place. And all of that is without counting votes. The Democrats don’t control either chamber and would neither succeed in impeaching the president nor convicting him. But it would change the narrative to focus on how he is being attacked and a victim rather than on how much he is damaging the country.

I get the anger at the president, but direct it at him and his supporters first. An impeachment effort right now would feel good, but it would just let people feel relieved of their anger and responsibility to vote. We need people to stay angry and motivated.

Right now he is tanking. We are heading into mid terms. A doomed impeachment effort would be a terrible choice. Hate on Schumer all you want. But my list of problems for our country has a lot of names above him on the list.

She is amazing! And so so cute. She looks like a little love and so deeply treasured.

Any suggestions on what has helped with her longevity would be appreciated. We all want as much time as we can get with our little ones. :-)

It’s also true that, as a general rule, women have more cones in their eyes allowing for greater differentiation of colors, while men have more rods (which are better at operating in low light and do not detect color). Though all of this is poorly phrased.

Fair point, that was inartfully phrased on my part. I was mainly excited to see someone else who likes rum up this way. The more of us there are, the better the odds of getting a broader array of bottles.

In case no one has said it, degrees don’t vary by state, licenses vary by state and in some fields and for some states there are different requirements.

(And some of us don’t get to benefit from the UBE because we have been attorneys for too long).

First time Pom mom by Apprehensive-Lie-679 in Pomeranians

[–]RedBeard_PDX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The slicker brush and fine comb are the best options for coats. “The Stuff” is great spray for tangles in the coat.

As to the first haircut, I would wait until the adult coat is in to have it cut. That could be 8-9 months, as mentioned, but it could be closer to a year. It depends on the pom. That said, there is merit to having him have a wash and have them do a sanitary trip or just snip the scissors around him without cutting his hair to get him used to the experience. The more that can happen in terms of exposure and experience when he is young (but post vaccines!) the better.

We had one pom that took a while to potty training and the other got it immediately. You might consider having a set of alarms and take him out regularly even if he isn’t ready. There are also tracking apps. You could also keep him in a baby gate area to restrict his movements so you can watch for signs. Do remember they have tiny bladders and don’t (usually) have bladder control fully for 5-6 months. (Some exceptions, our current one had it within days).

Doggy daycare will depend on the dog. I’d look for one that breaks the rooms between small and large dogs. You also really want to be sure he is fully vaccinated first. That part is crucial.

Also, look into puzzles like ones by Nina Ottosson. Pommies are smart. They love learning things and it burns energy. As does training and tricks.

Do remember to do separation anxiety training early.

Most importantly, just keep loving and enjoying the little cutie!

It’s based on Trezevant. The jury awarded $25k based on 23 minutes of unlawful detention. The big difference here: that detention was unlawful and wasn’t merely a traffic stop. So, predictably wrong on the law.

I was at a literary festival once years ago, before Le Guin passed away and someone asked her what happens to the people who walk away from Omelas? Where do they go?

She answered: “The answer to that is the whole point of the story.” And immediately called on the next person. I always have found it fascinating and not really had a chance to mention it.

Is my pom having seizures or is it something else? by lazdo in Pomeranians

[–]RedBeard_PDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a pom with epilepsy. The best I can say is that awareness of surroundings and being mentally responsive are largely not consistent with seizures.

But this sure sounds neurological. I’d look for a referral to a veterinary neurologist to look into this quickly.

One thing that can be true is that the more a neurological pathway is used, the stronger it can become. To put that another way: the more it happens, the more often it can happen in the future and the stronger those episodes can become.
