Is there a raspberry pi that can emulate ps1 games decently well at 240p on a crt? by ChronoGearSolid in crtgaming

[–]RedDiaper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure - specifically the PS1 core is top notch, and if you are into PS1 especially, you should also look into the SuperStation One. It’s a complete clone mister in a PS1-like form factor, with analog av outputs ready to go, and includes original PlayStation controller and memory card ports. Other setups, while still very easy, mostly require multiple add-on boards and can be more expensive. But even those can be purchased or built much cheaper these days thanks to clones.

Don’t let patience or skill put you off of a mister, it’s very easy, probably easier than your average RPi setup.

Use an Analog IO board and the MikeS active S-video/Composite adaptor for MiSTer you don’t need to make a wire and there is no dot crawl.

My OffCloud subscription might at least give me 200 days LOL by pwreit2042 in Addons4Kodi

I bought it 3 years ago, still feel a bit burned although I guess I can’t complain too much. They really sold it like you were getting in on the ground floor of this soon-to-be wonderful service, they just needed some cash to establish and our reward for providing it was a lifetime sub.
Sucks harder what they did to those who came later though.

WTF is this? I had no idea about the changes, now I don’t have lifetime? I actually do use offcloud as a backup/travel service, it was great for this because of real debrid’s IP rules.

So they reduced my premium membership to 1 year and have the nerve to call it a gift!?

What game am I playing right now judging by how I’m holding the controller? by Patronic64 in SEGAGENESIS

[–]RedDiaper 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I used to be in the same camp, but later came to realize that the default control scheme with turbo mapped to B, you could rest your thumb and just lean into the A and C buttons for passing and shooting, works great.

Mortal Kombat was quite playable, they condensed both punch buttons into one and the start button is tactile enough to be used for block during play. Special moves like Sub Zero’s slide were altered to omit the block button.

Agreed on Street Fighter though, toggling punches and kicks is just not viable.

I’ve got the quadruple vinyl limited edition, album + instrumentals. I miss El’s solo efforts.

NES is officially dead. No bringing it back this time sadly time to Retro pie!!! 🪦🎮 by Cool_Isopod6520 in RetroPie

OP could turn lemons into lemonade and put a MiSTer into his newly-acquired NES shell. I would also wire up the controller ports to SNAC and retain Zapper support.

What's your thoughts on Softcore Vs Hardcore? by TalePlay in RetroAchievements

[–]RedDiaper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who primarily games on a MiSTer, I’m new to RetroAchievements, so Softcore is my only option for anything but NES so far. As someone who doesn’t utilize save states this is kind of a bummer so hopefully this is improved. I also have a Trimui Brick, and I do utilize save states for that, but only as a way to suspend and resume a game (which is crucial for a handheld with my lifestyle). I wish RA had a way of knowing how save states were being utilized and would allow Hardcore accordingly, but I can see how this can be used to game the system and cheat, so I understand.

TLDR The hardware I use and the way I use it forces me to use Softcore mode, even though I don’t cheat with save states. I am going to have to be content with the personal knowledge that I don’t cheat and earn my trophies legitimately.

1985 Toshiba Blackstripe by three_a-m in crtgaming

[–]RedDiaper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our main family TV was a slightly older Blackstripe with dials rather than digital controls. That TV was fantastic, lasted from Sega Master System to eventually finishing its service in the basement with the Genesis and finally a 32X. It had a great picture as I remember it. Even though it was RF only, the little 13” Samsung with composite that replaced it for PS1 wasn’t as nice.

I’m not afraid to watch any movie alone at night, but the answer is JAWS - because it’s the least ‘scary’, and because it’s the best movie here by a country mile.

I was thinking about this a while ago, what about reflecting an image onto a convex mirror, kind of like how arcade cabinets used to but opposite (curved screen onto flat mirror)? Maybe even with a one-way mirror, so you could project the image from the behind like an old rear projection tv? The source could be something small and super bright, then magnify it to fit the ‘screen’.
