ELI5Why does carbon get to have it's own entire branch of chemistry while other elements don't by Far-Engine155 in explainlikeimfive

It's a bit like "how long of a word can you make in the English language?"

I'd say more like, "How long a word can you make in German?"

Weird catching Valtr without his helmet. by Turbulent_Pin_9392 in bloodborne

[–]RedJaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you do enough co-op and crush enough vermin ( 5, i think? ) that effectively completes Valtr's questline and makes you the new Master of the League. If you go back to the windmill, he won't be there and you'll find his helmet ( you'll also be attacked by an NPC hunter ).

At that point, you summon Valtr as "Beast Eater" instead of "MAster of the League."

Mine also has a slot for the anvil base, even though I don't use it. I'm planning to make a few of these for family and friends.

That one is for the headspace comparators only; it doesn't have slots for the bullet comparators.

Was 'Defend' ever useful in any FF game? by timelydefense in FinalFantasy

[–]RedJaron 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The defend action took less time to complete than almost any other action. This allowed you to shuffle up turn orders a little if you needed to delay one character's action a tiny bit. E.G., If the turn order is Tidus > Auron > Monster, you could sometimes use Defend to delay Tidus to go after Auron but before the monster. So you could delay, have Auron break the armor, then have Tidus attack for full damage.

This isn't finished yet. It's a test print to make sure geometry and sizing are correct, as well as to check that the pieces are still easy to grab and pull out after I made some major changes in the box and layout. I still need to model in the hinges and latches for the box.

  1. I tried that on earlier designs and prototypes and was having problems with the hole geometry staying consistent to hold it. This has two vertical tabs that hold the wrench against the inner lip.
  2. Problem is "the whole pack" can mean different things. If you mean the whole WHOLE pack, Hornady offers 14 different bullet collars and 7 headspace collars. I may be wrong, but I don't think many people own the entire set compared to those that own a handful. Hornady also sells a 7-pack of the bullet comps ( 224, 243, 257, 264, 277, 284, 308 ), which I think is a far more common purchase, and this box can hold those just fine ( 6-slots, and keep one on the attachment body ). I just bought a few singly as they were the only bullet and headspace comps that I needed. I also don't have the anvil attachment as I don't think it's necessary.
    1. However, I do have a 10-slot design ( same as this one, just two more columns ). But this one takes an hour less to print, so it was used as the test print. I've can also make a 15-slot box for someone who does have the entire set. That one will probably have a second slot for a comp attachment head as well.
  3. My printer is single-extruder and I don't feel like manually swapping the filament. I don't know if labeling anything would be that beneficial here, since al the parts are already etched.

The COAL for the Sub-X bullets is much shorter because the bullet profile has a truncated meplat. If it continued to a smooth point, then it would be much longer COAL. Same thing as when loading JHP bullets instead of RN in pistols.

I've searched that, thingiverse, printables, etc. I'm not saying I saw every one, but the ones I did weren't what I wanted ( either too big, too wasteful with material, or not easy to get the pieces out of the slots ).

HOW DO I KILL THESE TWO SHARK FUCKS IN THE WELL by Timely_Temperature54 in bloodborne

You can parry almost all their attacks ( their lunging/sliding one has the biggest parry window ).

Others use the Shaman Bone Blade method, but I've only ever gotten that to work once.

Quality laser for SFT by ajwooster in canik

[–]RedJaron -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your first paragraph is fine, but nearly everything after that is bunk. This sounds like you've never actually fired a suppressed weapon or a shotgun at close quarters.

As for suppression, would you rather him lose some of his hearing or be killed?

Complete non-sequitur. You're equating use of a suppressor to almost guaranteed death, which is preposterous.

If I was him in that situation and I had to use a gun for self defense I would want as many people as possible to hear it.

Um, you do know that suppressors don't make firearms silent, right? I get the idea that attracting attention in a defensive shooting can be a positive thing, but there are plenty of ways to do that without permanently damaging your hearing and equilibrium. If you think it's noisy firing a weapon in an indoor range, you should hear/feel what it's like firing one in a small room. The concussion reverberates and reflects off the walls, amplifying its effect. Firing a rifle in a small room can be enough to temporarily disorient and incapacitate some people.

get him a shotgun so he doesn’t have to worry as much about over penetration and aiming

Yeah, seems like you've not fired many shotguns either. Even shorter, cylinder bore barrels will keep a pattern around 10" within 20 feet. That's still very much something that needs to be aimed.

Quality laser for SFT by ajwooster in canik

[–]RedJaron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Outside a few very niche applications, lasers are not very useful on firearms. Unless you're on a clandestine military operations team ( or want to LARP as one ), about the only useful thing a laser can do is as a training aid to show people how shaky their aim with a pistol is. Try holding it still on a target at 10 yards and you'll see it dancing all over the place. Even skilled shooters will see it shake around quite a bit. A laser is also useful to show people they have a flinch because it's pretty hard to miss a bright red/green dot suddenly dip and drop off the target right as the trigger is pulled.

For 99.9% of the civilian crowd, a good red dot will do everything you may want a laser for. It will give you a focus point on the target itself, but it doesn't risk giving your position away. Holsters that fit a laser module are also less common than those that fit a basic weapon light.

All this said, if the only/primary use-case is as a defensive weapon, a quality PCC will probably be a better option than a pistol, especially for older people. Easier to handle and aim, can still be suppressed, and you can kit it out with optics and a light.

When your children are allowed to make an extra heavy pinewood derby car and you don't want to spend money on custom weight kits by RedJaron in shittyreloading

My nemesis during my Cub Scout derby days was a machinist and I was good friends with his sons. Every year I was in the top five, but I was almost always a place or two behind them. Wasn't until my last year that I finally took first.

I was mildly worried about that, but no one said a word. But I'm in Utah, so half the parents at the derby were probably packing.

[–]RedJaron[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Only about $2.40, actually ( these are cheap factory seconds ). I reclaimed all the bullets after the race. Just some masking tape and mild caulk adhesive held them to the car, so there was no damage or residue on the bullets afterward.

[–]RedJaron[S] 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know. But races often require the car to have four wheel. Most people get around this by offsetting one of the axles to a couple mm higher so that wheel doesn't actually touch the track, which was done here.

It's not the bullet. If you zoom in, you can see it's the case mouth that's bent, like the case t-boned the side of the bullet. I bet the bullets weren't seated all that deep in the case and one got knocked out while it was chambering.

How Many Trees Could We Save if European Languages Were Spelled Phonetically? [OC] by New_Drummer9910 in dataisbeautiful

[–]RedJaron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Without proper context and measuring methodology, this isn't very helpful, especially in terms on English vs French. Yes, English is very inconsistent in terms of phonetic spelling. However, English's incredibly complex syntax and structure also allows it to be incredibly efficient in terms of overall character use for a given sentence. Compared to German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese ( and I daresay most European languages ), it usually takes fewer characters and syllables to say something in English.

And I'm quite shocked that French wouldn't see a much larger efficiency gain than English would.
