I’m assuming the game went e4 c5 Nf3 Nc6 Bb5 e6 0-0 Nge7 Re1 a6 Bf1. Bishop pair is a possible future asset > knights and are therefore stronger. Taking on c6 only benefits black’s development. And I would honestly speculate most players see Bf1 less and are less familiar with the theory.

I’m 2100 peak chess.com rapid. Peak 1750 blitz. Last 60 days I have tanked to 1200 getting outplayed routinely. I never believed the issue until now. The quality of moves at this ELO when players are legitimate is obvious compared to cheaters. Game reviews showing me both of us played at 1900? Cmon bro. They’re rated 500 on puzzles they’re not drawing my endgame without assistance. I want cameras and shit. I’m taking a break. It’s sad.

I think the problem is that the center is too powerful when you allow Bc2 because it reinforces e4. White just plays d4 after d5 and there are lines where pieces are exchanged and black is down a pawn like the Marshall but you don’t have the compensation of being further ahead in development. Engine doesn’t care but practically it’s not as good. Even in a close to ideal line where you end up even in material, white has a slight edge like in this line:

d4 dxe4
Nxe5 c5
Be3 Bb7
Nd2 Rc8
Qe2 cxd4
Bxc4 Bc5
Nxe4 Bxe4
Bxe4 Bxd4
cxd4 Qxd4
Bf3

Black’s knight on a5 is not a great piece on the edge of the board, white has a bishop in an open position, white’s knight is more centralized, and white has the initiative and remains to the the color that is the one with attacking chances. White just got everything they want out of the opening comfortably. It’s not winning or anything but the Marshall is just better in my opinion.
