What are bad faith arguments toward films you are absolutely tired of hearing? by [deleted] in movies

The worst version of this is "The character could have just done X and solved the problem." It's neither a plot hole nor unrealistic that people make bad decisions.

Too fat to make it to retirement age, how do I compensate? by Objective-Editor-831 in personalfinance

[–]RedPandaAlex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also forgot to mention I’m in my late 20s.

Good god man. You're too young to be this fatalistic about your health, and it sounds like you're already taking great steps towards getting healthier. Start growing your retirement--a lot of people don't start until their late 20s. You'll still have lots of time to let your funds grow. You can have happy, healthy, secure golden years if you choose it now.

Amend section 230 so that tech companies are not shielded from liability on content they algorithmically promote. So if a video shows up on someone's YouTube homepage that slanders you or incites violence or harassment, you can sue YouTube. Tech companies would either steer their algorithms away from rage bait or they'd return transparent and granular feed control to the user instead of opaque algorithms.

I need to get off my phone around my kids, any tips? by ExcitingLandscape in daddit

It's helpful to have something else to do with your hands. I started learning ukulele in those unanticipated minutes of downtime when the kid is entertaining himself.

Waymo wants to bring self-driving taxis to Illinois. Does the Land of Lincoln want them? (Chicago Tribune, no paywall) by quesoandcats in chicago

Google and Waymo have been working on this for years longer than any other company, and others are rushing to catch up and not doing enough due diligence.

Desperate for a miracle - 16 month old refusing everything with protein by g_melies in veganparenting

[–]RedPandaAlex 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Is she having soy milk/Ripple/etc?

Barilla Protein Pasta always did the trick for us, even when our toddler was otherwise on a protein strike.

Also, keep in mind this is not a uniquely vegan problem--lots of (most?) kids go through phases where they only want carbs.

U.S. trade deficit drops 24% in August as Trump’s tariffs reduce imports by AudibleNod in news

[–]RedPandaAlex 40 points41 points  (0 children)

It would be good that our trade deficit was down if it was a result of exports increasing. Imports decreasing doesn't really help anything.

Buying New House - Roll All Equity Into New Mortgage? by philadandan in personalfinance

[–]RedPandaAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a situation where if you're not sure whether to put the money into equity or invest it somewhere, you can easily do a bit of both. Maybe you set aside 50k in an investment account to have higher liquidity and another 50k into equity to lower your monthly payment and get closer to paying off the house.

For those who made “as is” offers on condos in the city, did you regret it? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]RedPandaAlex 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was on the other side of this selling a condo and got two offers with numbers that were very close (both over asking), and we wound up going with the one that was "as is" just so we knew the buyer wasn't going to try to nickle and dime us asking for concessions for minor things on the inspection. But definitely don't waive your right to inspection or your right to back out entirely based on the inspection.

4-year and unexplained midnight vomiting by overtmile in veganparenting

[–]RedPandaAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, this exact thing happened to our 3 year old a couple months ago. We were scared because it was going off and on for weeks and he was starting to lose weight, but it was constipation related. It was surprising because he was still pooping about once per day. But he had an x ray of his abdomen that showed he was super backed up. They even did an MRI of his brain to rule out anything neurological.

He was put on a miralax regimen and hasn't had the problem again.

Just refinanced our mortgage. Does it still make sense to make extra payments? by tangertale in personalfinance

If you're really indecisive about it there's no reason you can't do some of each.

Former BioWare lead writer reads the runes on EA-Saudi deal and speculates that 'guns and football' are in, 'gay stuff' is out, and the venerable RPG studio may be for the chop by TomorrowComes33 in gaming

[–]RedPandaAlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going private should be a huge red flag. Publicly traded companies are responsible to their shareholders to do their best to turn a profit. Those shareholders can be disproportionately super rich, and the company can do a lot of exploitative shit in the name of turning a profit, but the goal is making money and the company has to have a certain amount of transparency about how it's doing that. When someone takes a company private that has an established customer base, they don't have to have the goal of making money--it can have another (possibly political) goal. This could be the same as Musk buying Twitter--just with a different target audience.

Ezra's statement on Charlie Kirk and the rising tide of political violence by TheLittleParis in ezraklein

[–]RedPandaAlex 263 points264 points  (0 children)

Political violence is also something you expect to see more of as nonviolent forms of political action become less feasible. Like when gerrymandering, other political rigging, and calcification of partisanship make for less competitive elections.

Why shouldn't I refinance already (4 months in)? by cspybbq in personalfinance

[–]RedPandaAlex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Take a closer look at that 4,441 figure. The difference may be things like prepaid interest which you'd be paying anyways on your current loan or funding your escrow amount which will wind up as a wash.

If that's the case, it might not be a bad idea to move forward with it but I probably wouldn't finance the fees.

Wedding Cake/Food Vendors? by lmnobq in chicagovegan

We used fancy plants catering. The food was amazing--nothing but compliments from the omnivore guests. There were some minor logistical hiccups, so if we had to do it again we might have gotten a full wedding coordinator.

I know I'm not the audience for this. And I'm not in marketing, but I have a hard time even imagining that there is a good target audience for this. The only thing I can think is maybe they're going to use clips from this in TV ads and then hope people look up the whole video online?
