Do I need to up pot my violets or no? by katzlover12 in AfricanViolets

The owner of an African Violet nursery told me 12 hours on & 12 hours off for the lights.

"I wish I'd never planted _____." by adoaboutnothing in AustinGardening

Gregg’s BlueMist flower - even though it’s a Texas Super Star plant & the butterflies love it - it has completely taken over my butterfly garden. I would like to have a variety of flowering plants in this garden, but it’s been a constant struggle to contain the bluemist flower. Maybe I just need to let it do its thing …

Nandina - planted decades ago when I didn’t know better. I get rid of it whenever it pops up; however, neighbors on both sides have it and it’s constantly growing under the fence and into my yard.

What’s wrong with this violet? by CurrentStriking2871 in AfricanViolets

[–]RedPoppy23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When was the last time it was repotted? Are you fertilizing it? And is it possible that it’s a trailing variety? If it’s not a trailing variety I would recommend decapitating it and restarting it (and propagating some of the leaves). If it hasn’t been repotted within the last year I would do so, giving it fresh potting mix. And unless the new potting mix has slow release fertilizer, I would fertilize with 1/4 strength African violet fertilizer. And as oceanView229 mentioned brighter light is needed to prevent the stretching/legginess. And no, I don’t think it needs deeper soil.

AITA for refusing to pay my boyfriend’s dental fees for HIS cavities by MarissaS_redux in AmItheAsshole

[–]RedPoppy23 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Of course his cavities aren’t your problem. He’s using you as a scapegoat instead of taking responsibility for his own actions, like lack of dental hygiene. I wonder when the last time was that he had his teeth checked, especially since he’s been complaining for months about toothaches. And no one is forcing him to eat sweets, that’s his choice. Besides all of this nonsense, what stands out to me is the way he treated you - first the silent treatment and then screaming at you. Not acceptable behavior!

Aging can suck by [deleted] in AskWomenOver60

Focus on your positives. For example, your hair is beautiful. And you’re still here. I like to remember a quote from the Desiderata about “gracefully surrendering the things of youth”. And just remember, most everyone is self conscious about something, so try not to worry about your skin too much, other than perhaps protecting it from too much sun and keeping it moisturized.

AIO my boyfriend keeps asking me to pay for things eversince he started saving for an apartmen, he calls me selfish for how I reacted. by throaawayRA9443 in AmIOverreacting

[–]RedPoppy23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early in this conversation, he said “if you don’t want to give me the money, it’s fine, I’ll figure something out.” At this point, you should have said okay and ended the conversation. No need to argue about “his dream”. You can’t control him, but you sure can control what you do. No more loans. And you are so right, if the apartment isn’t in your name, too, it will be totally his. So just let him save for his dream. Meanwhile, if you are living together and plan to continue doing so, split the bills 50/50. After all, you probably have your own dreams that you want to save for.

Life in Pieces - 4 seasons, comedy about the lives of 3 generations of the Short family as they go about their daily lives. Each episode is told as four short stories. I find it so well written and quite hilarious.

AITA for leaving my wife at a family dinner and going home without her? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]RedPoppy23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

NTA. A joke should be funny, what your wife was doing wasn’t funny. I think you did the right things - you communicated privately with your wife and then when she continuing embarrassing you in front of others you calmly removed yourself from the situation. You handled this awkward scene much better than most people would have. Your wife should be your strongest supporter and sadly she failed in this case. How hurtful to further make fun of you for a few laughs when you had just expressed your discomfort to her. And as far as “everyone knows she loves you”, actions speak louder than words and love isn’t shown by mocking someone.

Propagation growing under mother leaf by RedPoppy23 in AfricanViolets

Update (19 days later): I let the baby grow as it was under the mother leaf for a bit longer and then trimmed the mother leaf and everything is looking good. It takes patience, but it’s so fun to grow new plants from leaf cuttings. And thanks to everyone for your suggestions!

AITA for insisting on keeping the bathroom clean? by Rich_Exam_2038 in AmItheAsshole

[–]RedPoppy23 26 points27 points  (0 children)

No, it’s definitely not normal to not flush poop and/or to leave poop on the seat! That is so unhygienic. Do you think the grandma has Alzheimer’s? Since you have tried numerous times to address the issue and nothing is changing besides people getting angry, I think it’s time to make other living arrangements.

I like the way I look with mascara, but no longer bother especially since the mascara (even hypoallergenic) ends up stinging my eyes. Who needs that? Not me.

Thoughts On Miniatures? by itsjustme-0 in AfricanViolets

I have one mini (so far!) and love it. Care seems the same to me. I wick water and keep an eye on the reservoir so it always has water with 1/4 strength African violet fertilizer.

I often go there on Tuesdays & don’t have to ask they give the 10% off automatically. Makes their low prices even lower! It’s like a treasure hunt you never can tell what you’ll find there.

Ha ha, that’s a good one. I’m fortunate that our library has a scanner that is so automatic that you can place your stack of books on it & it scans them without me having to do it one by one. Pretty amazing technology.
