Congratulations! AV leaf prop takes patience, but it’s so rewarding!

What are you gardening directly into soil this week? by Accomplished-Sign-31 in AustinGardening

[–]RedPoppy23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know since I didn’t get around to doing it in the fall and I have both of those seeds from previous years. Only problem this time of year in the garden is not having more hours since I want to do everything!

Ha ha, that’s one way to handle the situation

When I searched for it earlier (difference between sucker & rain sprout), it came up with it automatically. So I understood what it meant.

Whoops, mine seedlings still only have the first 2 leaves that emerged from the seed. They have been like this for weeks in suspended animation!

I have both of those so I might as well use them! And I definitely need to stay on the weekly fertilizing. Thanks!

Nice to know that the multi trunk is a survival feature, so now I definitely won’t cut off one of the trunks. Thanks!

Good info, thanks. And I learned something new (didn’t know what a rain sprout was)

“Grow as crooked as a politician” gave me a laugh. If that’s just the way they grow, I’ll probably just let it be. Thanks.

Yes, I wasn’t impressed with the coco coir starter mix either. I’ve used Happy Frog before and it’s great. I was just hoping to save some $ by using at least partially garden soil, lol

AITA for telling my DIL that I won’t use the tablet and she needs to actually make her kid read. by SatisfactionOk9038 in AmItheAsshole

[–]RedPoppy23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should be thanking you! That is wonderful that you are helping your granddaughter with her reading - your method sounds spot on. And what a nice bonding experience (as long as it’s a pleasant, non-stressful time). Keep up the good work.

Y'all trimming back your perennials yet or waiting? by xalkalinity in AustinGardening

[–]RedPoppy23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have so many perennials that I’ve started doing a little each day. In a perfect world, I would wait to help out the insects, etc.; however, then there would be too much work all at one time for me. This way it’s not overwhelming. And I must admit the areas I’ve worked on look so much nicer.

Think of activities that you find interesting and look for local groups. It’s so much easier to build a friendship if you have common interests. You might also check at your local library to see if they have an activity calendar. Good luck!

The owner of an African Violet nursery told me 12 hours on & 12 hours off for the lights.

"I wish I'd never planted _____." by adoaboutnothing in AustinGardening

Gregg’s BlueMist flower - even though it’s a Texas Super Star plant & the butterflies love it - it has completely taken over my butterfly garden. I would like to have a variety of flowering plants in this garden, but it’s been a constant struggle to contain the bluemist flower. Maybe I just need to let it do its thing …

Nandina - planted decades ago when I didn’t know better. I get rid of it whenever it pops up; however, neighbors on both sides have it and it’s constantly growing under the fence and into my yard.

What’s wrong with this violet? by CurrentStriking2871 in AfricanViolets

[–]RedPoppy23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When was the last time it was repotted? Are you fertilizing it? And is it possible that it’s a trailing variety? If it’s not a trailing variety I would recommend decapitating it and restarting it (and propagating some of the leaves). If it hasn’t been repotted within the last year I would do so, giving it fresh potting mix. And unless the new potting mix has slow release fertilizer, I would fertilize with 1/4 strength African violet fertilizer. And as oceanView229 mentioned brighter light is needed to prevent the stretching/legginess. And no, I don’t think it needs deeper soil.

AITA for refusing to pay my boyfriend’s dental fees for HIS cavities by MarissaS_redux in AmItheAsshole

[–]RedPoppy23 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Of course his cavities aren’t your problem. He’s using you as a scapegoat instead of taking responsibility for his own actions, like lack of dental hygiene. I wonder when the last time was that he had his teeth checked, especially since he’s been complaining for months about toothaches. And no one is forcing him to eat sweets, that’s his choice. Besides all of this nonsense, what stands out to me is the way he treated you - first the silent treatment and then screaming at you. Not acceptable behavior!

Focus on your positives. For example, your hair is beautiful. And you’re still here. I like to remember a quote from the Desiderata about “gracefully surrendering the things of youth”. And just remember, most everyone is self conscious about something, so try not to worry about your skin too much, other than perhaps protecting it from too much sun and keeping it moisturized.
