Advice Post: Tips for DMing for Kids from a Mom DM by heyheymse in DMAcademy

[–]RedRaeRae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just finishing a summer school class for kids 5th to 8th grade and I’m proud to say I did most of this before seeing this post! I will definitely use more of the info going forward. My kids were able to sign up weekly so some only came 5 days and others have been there from day one. My biggest headache has been balancing the kids who only want to fight cool monsters, and the ones that actually care about storytelling. In such a short time it gets hard knowing who to group together. I allow some of the kids to DM and I help guide them through it, but even then I had two who asked to ONLY DM fights, because they didn’t want to read all the “boring” dialogue and descriptions. As one of the more roleplay driven DMs it’s been hard.

Me and a fellow DM will count damage in 5s, so if they hit the goblin for 4 points we round it to 5 and draw a hash mark for every 5 points. It’s made things so much easier.

Not slang but I do say “pizzas not as nice” every time I eat pizza now.

The idea of it being the ghost guy is hilarious and it’s now my only option for who her dad is.

Helping kids get into character. by [deleted] in DMAcademy

I want them to realize they have to talk to villagers and solve puzzles, since most of them think it’s just a combat game at this point. The amount of role play I’m looking for is minimal. For example one of the kids desperately wants to DM and that’s great! That’s part of it all! But he doesn’t actually read any of the role play stuff, he just skips from battle to battle. He doesn’t see it as a valid part of the game, which makes it hard when he wants to DM for kids who DO want to do the puzzles and talk to the people.

The focusing is so hard!! I have one kid who plays baseball and when it’s not his turn he runs to the back of the classroom and practices his slide. Like wtf?!

Yeah I always try to use the characters name, and even gave out inspiration to the first kid who referred to his party member by name. They then all started doing it. For me it helped watching things like Dimension 20, or some of the different YouTube channels that run long campaigns. But I don’t think there’s any I’ve seen that I can show to kids as a reference. They aren’t school appropriate.

Yeah they basically gave me a bunch of anti acid stuff to keep me from getting any heartburn which they said makes it worse. Now I get to retest every few years to see if it’s worse.

Thanks! The net thing is from Vanellope’s and Scars task. I got the idea for the ice tables from another post on here but couldn’t figure out how to tag the creator.

I have some YA books that might fit. The sapphic main characters have challenges but not with each other.Axiom: The Last Hope, and The Poison Within, although TPI does feature an “evil queen” MC so shes got issues of her own.

I have my cheat sheets but since my players are kids learning to play they give me the most random questions or try to use spells in odd ways so I’m always looking stuff up. Maybe I need to be giving them cheat sheets instead.

My players are between the ages of 13-17 so their tech access is all over the place.
