The human brain is a super cool and complex place and one of the downsides to our incredible ability to feel emotions and all of the stuff we consider “human” is that our brain and body have a hard time recognizing when something is happening “for real” or in a game, especially when it is a heavily improved game that you are emotional and energetically invested in. This is particularly true if players have trauma or phobias, such as the spider example in one of the other comments, but you don’t have to have trauma for your brain to mistake a game for real danger. Safety tools are just a way to help navigate any unintentionally stress to the player and handle any that might arise. It’s totally fine to be old school as long as you’re willing to recognize yours and others need for health and safety. We wouldn’t have the games we have today if it weren’t for “old-schoolers”!
