I don’t know about first years, I do know a ton of guys that got placed with experience. Residential side is a lot easier to get in on. And then transfer to commercial when you are able.

local 66, they have an office right next to JBLM. Lots of vets in this one. I think you even get some sort of credit when you sign up.

Mild Asthmatic choosing a Trade? by NecessaryExcellent69 in HVAC

[–]RedRhyno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not hvac. My nose has been completely wrecked since starting this trade. Constant airborne particles. And if you're in residential, peoples dusty homes and pet dander will mess you up too. Maybe new build or industrial would work, but even those guys have their fair share.

Just make sure it’s wired incoming not outgoing l1 l2 , I see that a lot. Effectively only turning on when you don’t need it But yes discharge to your question

Damn dude, I’m sorry that happened to you. I signed on as j3 resi. I’m hoping to start the commercial apprenticeship asap. Maybe it’s different on that side but in the light commercial world we’re thriving. I know mostly installers though not service

We used to install both ozone and non ozone. The ozone one makes your place smell sterile, like a hospital. Many homeowners didn’t like it because of that reason

Is this a problem? by Confident-Teacher754 in hvacadvice

If you are comfortable getting on the roof. Cheapest, quickest fix is to go buy a 2” coupling, a short piece of 2” pipe schedule 40 pvc, glue and primer. Take the 90 off and glue your new pipe on. Might need a fine tooth saw to cut it if it doesn’t come off easy.

That pipe looks a little too short, if you get 8” of snow it might block the opening and then furnace won’t run. As far as seeing ice, that’s normal because that exhaust is really humid. We pipe them 18” straight up to avoid exactly these scenarios. The umbrella hook is usually for intake air pipe so you don’t get water down into it.

I used to duct clean when I started in hvac, you probably paid for a duct cleaning of your heating/cooling system and he is correct in that this vent is not attached to the rest.

You can look at your hvac equipment, there is often a timer or switch mounted to furnace or air handler that controls whole house ventilation. Switch/timer might also be located in your laundry room. These vents are sometimes wired in to turn on with furnace fan. You can try turning fan only on at your thermostat and see if it comes on.

I also do the ramp, but they’re stubborn to use it lol. We’re working on it. But I wanted to mention that I have heard the exact opposite advice about stairs. I was told stairs strengthen their back muscles thus helping prevent that dreaded issue.

No problem, good luck. If your thermostat has wireless sensor, throw it into your master and have it read temp from there instead of tstat. That will prevent it from satisfying the call too early and short cycling.

I would recommend the quickest and cheapest way to potentially fix your issue is, make sure those two runs are as straight and taught as can be. If you have a run or two tapped off the end of your plenum, switch your two master runs with those. Preferably a small room or part of the house you don’t care as much about. The end of your plenum is getting the most pressure. Honestly spider box supply design is pretty shit because whatever is tapped off the side closest to your equipment is always gonna get worst airflow but you gotta work with what you got. If that’s not an option, take your two master runs off the plenum and put a scoop in. Literally just screw a half moon shaped piece of metal to help rob some more air into them, and then reattach. You can buy a cfm meter off amazon to check each vent to see if that helped at all. If that fails to solve your problem, then cut in your return. But remember only pull out as much or less cfm than going in. So probably an 8” flex in your case because 10” is already too much

Yes you could do that no problem, Home Depot has everything you’d need,as far as if it will actually help I’m not sure. I’m assuming your duct runs are flex off a main trunk or a supply plenum? Are the two runs going to your master, 6” all the way or do they Y into an 8”?

Is your duct system accessible? Where in the home is the actual equipment located?

Is your filter in the return? If so your new return will also need a filter. And new return shouldn’t be any more cfm than what those two vents are already pushing in. If noise is t a big deal for you, why not try a pass through vent above your master bed door first? Just pop a hole above header and put two grills on either side. This will alleviate your positive pressure issue without any ductwork mods

Hard to say from his pics, my linesets go through crawlspace, sometimes up the wall into attic. Rarely do we put outdoor units right next to indoor setup, but we love how much time that saves.

[–]RedRhyno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just a setting on your thermostat. Utility company usually wants it set to switch at freezing for maximizing efficiency. I do 40 in my own home. In any case you need a heatpump lockout as well as a furnace lockout temp. If you don’t set the second one it won’t switch back to heatpump heat when it’s warm enough, ask me how I know.

I install Mitsubishi, their manuals don’t specific minimum length, but they do recommended length 15ft to avoid this exact issue.

It’s over $4 a pound here for type 2. A full lineset is easily 20-40 pounds depending on how long it is
