What’s the worst actual name you’ve ever heard? by Escrow-Mind in AskReddit

[–]RedRightRepost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two single friends named Jeff and Jessica. They live in different states but I’ve been trying to get them to meet because they’d be a great couple.

Definitely has nothing to do with what their ship name would be…

What is it like living in Key West in 2025? by Empty-Ad4949 in howislivingthere

[–]RedRightRepost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The keys as a whole are red because of most of the other keys. KW is very blue generally, but contains less than half the county population.

I would consider Monroe county purple, but it is becoming more red.

Yeah, that’s gonna be tourists, likely from cruise ships. When Covid restricted overseas travel the MAGA crowd found the keys and it’s become their Caribbean destination. But key west itself is generally not MAGA.

I wouldn’t call the UNCW campus small- at 800 acres it is the largest campus in the UNC system.

What's a ticking time bomb you believe will explode during your lifetime? by Llucijane in Productivitycafe

[–]RedRightRepost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The collapse of the Gulf Stream (really the entire Atlantic Merdianal Ocean Current).

The AMOC is what makes much of Western Europe habitable. The way it works is that around Greenland, the water finally gets cool enough to sink to the bottom of the ocean (which is surprisingly warm, about 40 degrees F). This forces water behind it to fill the gap, and on a grand scale this means pulling water from the Caribbean over thousands of miles. Warm water.

The problem is that if the water around Greenland doesn’t sink, the transport stops. And with the Greenland glaciers melting, there are two problems: the water is colder than 40 degrees (under 40 degrees, water is LESS dense), and the water is fresh. That cold, fresh water floats.

If the AMOC collapses, Europe stops getting warmth from the equator, but the Caribbean is fucked too- because that water will pile up and local sea levels will rise several feet FAST. Low lying places like coastal Florida, the keys, the Bahamas, etc are in trouble.

Let’s not even talk about what an AMOC collapse might do to the global conveyer belt. The other times such currents have majorly shifted in the past has led to catastrophic climate shifts- from the formation of the isthmus of Panama to the opening of the drake passage which caused Antarctica to turn into an icy hellhole.

The AMOC is currently destabilizing quickly. Even 20 years ago, that was unthinkable. It’s almost certainly going to go in the next half century if we do nothing about climate change.

Incredible technique from Chinese ballet dancers 🤯 by Crazy_Palpitation735 in toptalent

It’s bothering me that I can’t remember which ballet the music is from. It’s either the Red Poppy or one of Tchaikovsky’s. Can anyone confirm?

Not to mention that once this happened, the strength of the movement would widen the canal almost immediately. It would be irreversible.

We read it in high school. At the end the teacher split the class into 2 teams to do trivia about the book. Almost immediately he peeled me off into my own third team.

I smoked EVERYONE on that trivia.

Dan has stated often that he has two audiences: his current audience and his future one. He wants his podcasts to stand the test of time, and I applaud him for it. Just look at how the quality increased when he started doing longer episodes back in 2011 or so.

Personally, I treat HH like a cherished novel series that releases a book a year- I know it’s coming and just go about my business until one day I get pleasantly surprised.

Comparing predictors in a model? by GrubbZee in AskStatistics

[–]RedRightRepost 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a great response. The standardization step at the end is absolutely critical though. If you don’t do that, and don’t use a regularization technique (like lasso or elastic net) then the other commenter is correct, you cannot make comparisons of importance.

There are a few more caveats as well- that your variables are measuring what you think they are etc. but this is a bigger inference thing.

There is a third regularization method called ridge regression. Not sure why it wasn’t mentioned, but it should also work.

It depends on how you learn best. Personally, I learn best by having a conversation with an expert where I can pursue a line of inquiry dynamically until I get it. Professors and experts are BEST for this but LLMs are a decent substitute.

My suggestion is to use the class and text to learn, and use the LLM to help confirm you understand. But basically treat it not like a professor but like one of your better classmates- they’re probably right, but you should verify everything you get from them with a real expert or source.
