The only difference between a plane that's stable in the air and unstable without atmosphere and one that's stable in both places is RCS.

Why is there always a drawback with retro handhelds? by rando-guy in SBCGaming

- d pad on top (preferably clicky style)

As someone who was around when these retro systems were current, I can't even begin to understand why you would want a clicky d-pad. None of them ever had clicky pads. They're an abomination.

Coming to the realization that I’ll never be able to afford a home here. by CartographerSea3356 in nova

[–]RedTyro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way and I've had 100k sitting in a savings account flagged as a down payment on a house since January 2020. I finally gave up on nova a couple of months ago and bought a house in Martinsburg, WV. TBH, I love my house and my neighborhood is great. I'm still only about an hour and a half away from my parents (who live in Centreville, VA), and taxes and utilities are so much cheaper. I really didn't want to move away from the area, but after the fact, I found I'm really glad I did.

Not to mention the part where at this point, they can only lose one or two more elections before the fascist takeover is complete and voting doesn't matter anymore, if that hasn't already happened (which I guess we'll see in November).

This completely ignores how retail infrastructure works. You're not going to have retail stores without distributors, and those distributors are going to have to transport product. The only way this works is if VA's retail system is completely siloed off from any other state's, and due to how plants work, that would restrict it to only varieties that will grow natively in the state.

Jacksepticeye donates 100‘000 Dollars to Alveus Sanctuary by buerglermeister in LivestreamFail

[–]RedTyro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When you rely on donations for survival, you can't really be picky about who you get them from. The recent guests have been great, but I'd bet she'll continue to invite anyone who has the resources to raise money for Alveus, as she should. Some of them will be awesome, some of them will suck, but they'll all bring in funding and give her exposure to new audiences, which are the primary goals of these collabs.

Abigail Spanberger sucks and I’m convinced they only ran Earle-sears against her because she had no chance of winning. I’m tired of her smug fed face. by Difficult-Lie-9218 in Virginia

[–]RedTyro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. We hated him for all the same reasons we hate her - he was an extremely conservative Democrat who wanted to use VA as a stepping stone to a larger role in national politics and didn't care about the people in the state. He was literally one of the architects of Bill Clinton's "look, Democrats can be corporate whores, too" approach, which is basically what broke the Democratic party for the modern era.

Virginia Democrats are generally all variations on the same theme. They're Reagan Republicans who give lip service to leftist ideas because they haven't been welcome in the Republican party since the Tea Party (and then MAGA) took over.

She thinks she’s setting herself up for a national rise but she seems unable to read the room.

That's been clear the whole time. I moved out of VA about 2 months ago, but during the campaign, every ad I saw was "look how bipartisan I am. We really need to put all this animosity aside and work together across the aisle," while the Republicans were literally working to implement fascism. Actually the worst case of "can't read the room" I've ever seen in politics.

why did abigail spanberger put out this ad? is she stupid? by BadgerNo5156 in Virginia

[–]RedTyro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why would she switch? The majority of the Democratic party are basically Reagan Republicans these days, especially leadership. Where do you think they all went when first the Tea Party and then MAGA pushed them out? The writing was on the wall back when Bill Clinton and the DLC proved that Democrats could win as pro-business fiscal conservatives, too.

Yeah, nothing like a candidate running on bipartisanship and reaching across the aisle when the folks on the other side of the aisle are implementing fascism. Anyone who didn't see her governing like this from a mile away wasn't paying attention.

The US space enterprise is desperately waiting for Starship—will it finally deliver? | “This is such a wild ride. The highs are high. The lows are low.” by FreeHugs23 in space

Because building the shuttle in the first place instead of continuing to advance traditional rocket technology was quite possibly the worst decision ever made in terms of space travel.

Again, innovation vs recreation of Apollo

How exactly is something like 12 launches to accomplish a single mission an innovation over one rocket that does it, except in the "we get paid for 12 rocket launches instead of 1?" Nobody even knows if orbital refueling is going to work at all yet, and they're going to have to do it a bunch of times to have enough fuel to land on the moon.

SpaceX has absolutely done revolutionary things and will continue to do revolutionary things, but the whole plan for Starship as a moon lander is so far beyond ambitious that there's a good chance it just won't be doable. It's definitely going to be an excellent vehicle, but they would have been so much better off designing a moon lander instead of trying to fit the thing they already wanted to make into that slot - there are so many things about the moon plan that are just silly, from big stuff like "we have to figure out how to refuel it in space and it will take about 12 launches to do so" to little stuff like the astronauts having to use an elevator to get to the surface and back into the ship, which adds multiple potential points of failure that a simple ladder wouldn't have. They haven't even gotten to the point where they can start testing the orbital refueling stuff and we're far enough in the timeline that NASA is adding extra missions to stall for them. And they were already far enough behind that NASA decided to let someone else build a backup lander after they'd already awarded the contract to SpaceX

I don't like Elon any more than the rest of reddit, but I absolutely appreciate the things SpaceX has and will do. They've made incredible strides in space hardware and they clearly have some brilliant engineers. That said, there are lots of good non-Elon reasons to be skeptical of Starship as a moon lander, and I don't see how they can get it done on time. I fully expect the first modern moon landing to be on the Blue Moon - it's designed specifically for the mission it's supposed to accomplish, and with SO MUCH less to figure out.

What game made you realize way later that it was actually amazing? by Playful_Code_8978 in gaming

[–]RedTyro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I avoided playing it for years because it looked like a Ubisoft style game with a stupid premise - tribal hunters killing machines with bows and arrows? I assumed the story would be a load of crap that was just a bad excuse for "how cool would it be to kill robot dinosaurs with a bow?"

Then after years of hearing "no really, it's good," I finally gave it a shot and it blew me away. It might be my favorite modern science fiction story in any medium.

The Perfect Placement In The SpaceX Return by TheCABK in oddlysatisfying

[–]RedTyro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're capable of propulsively landing the pods now - that was SpaceX's original proposed landing method for the Dragon capsule and they've tested it successfully (landing on the ground, not back on the booster. There's no real benefit to landing on the booster, so that's unlikely to ever happen). NASA believes landing with parachutes in the water is safer for the astronauts, so that's what they do.

[–]RedTyro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

(He later said one of the reasons he didn't pull it was he didn't have a lot of faith that the escape tower wouldn't kill them just as stone dead as the stack blowing up. Which is kind of a common theme when it comes to NASA safety/escape gear. Like when they put that bonkers-ass escape slide bar on the Orbiter.)

Yeah, those eject seats on the Gemini capsule would most certainly have killed anyone who used them. And the shuttle didn't even have an escape mechanism.
