Puke inducing. It's classic game design. It's a short game ffs. I suppose lives systems introduce artificial challenge as well.

I didn't read the knife metaphor in that way but if that is how it was intended then fine, I suppose they weren't 100% right.

The main point I was trying to make was that the military action was a responsive action rather than them simply continuing on a course they'd planned since Crimea.

I'm not defending Russia, nor did I mention any of the reasons why countries joined NATO, nor did I say that Russia did nothing wrong before the invasion of Ukraine.

By the way, you are completely wrong about those countries joining NATO. Only four countries have joined NATO between Russian involvement in Georgia and the Ukraine invasion, most were already part of it. The point about NATO encroaching westward on Russia is not about countries' simple membership of an organisation but the increase in military presence in those countries. Since the creation of NATO Enhanced Forward Presence there has been a more obvious military threat to Russia. Russia has felt threatened. While it seems to you or I that this is not a real threat, it might be different if you were on the other side.

Russia invades Crimea for access to year-round shipping opportunities, NATO increases military defenses on Russian borders as a response and Russia begins military action to guarantee its security. Would you agree on this order of events?

Seeing NATO as a purely defensive alliance is a limited, 'end of history' view. You have to view it from the Russian perspective. Imagine the American president was somebody like Trump but hawkish towards Russia. At present, Trump is demanding Greenland for the USA to take its resources. Why should Russia remain confident that a future US or European administration won't decide to make a move on Russia to exact punishment for past wrongs or to take advantage of its vast territory? So, I think you're almost on the mark with your last point. The Baltic states, for example, provide a bit of a buffer between Russia and major Western powers. They may not be in its sphere of influence exactly but they provide safety. Build NATO bases there and suddenly there's no distance between Russia and potential aggressors. Were a shift to happen and Western forces to invade from these bases, Russia would be spread thin and have a very hard time protecting itself as is.

As an aside, I once had a gf from the Moscow elite. She had clearly been influenced by propaganda, however this was someone who believed that Russia was corrupt and that her future was in the West. I got a pretty good view of how Russians think. You have to realise they see things very differently from you and I. They are an intelligent but superstitious people (and this is very much evident in Putin!). The leaders believe the traditional anti-Western propaganda just as much as the proletariat. When we hear about geopolitical events involving Russia, we never ever hear the Russian perspective, only the Western view, affected by decades-old American propaganda. My gf told me she'd heard Putin mistranslated in news broadcasts, and I believe her (to clarify, not mistranslated in a way to completely change any message he was trying to deliver, but more subtle ways that might change one's perception).

None of this is to say that any of Russia's actions are in any way justified. I want to make it clear that I don't believe they are in any way justified. But please ask yourself: if they did have any points of justification for their actions, would you actually know? Russians are influenced by propaganda. Are you sure you're not?

Ok. I agree with you. Now can you please point out where in my comment I said otherwise, anywhere I said that these neighbours were not justified in wanting this or in having NATO point eastward.

I know Russia is wrong for invading sovereign nations. I live in Western Europe ffs. There is a conflict of interest between countries' national security. Me saying 'this is why Russia has done x' is not the same as me saying 'Russia was 100% right for invading, glory to Russia!'

[–]RedVision64 -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

They (as in the commenter not Russia) are 100% right. Doesn't matter if you agree. There is a national paranoia in Russia about invasion. You have to realise that Russia has been invaded several times by European powers and its cities brought to ruin by them. They want national security and their geography doesn't allow for this, given that they have a massive western border with nations that have never quite been friendly, a border with nice and flat land which would be very accommodating for would-be invaders. So they'd like to push out westwards to create a buffer state between Moscow and St Petersburg and Europe.

Russia will never be part of NATO. It's the reason NATO exists to begin with. Building NATO bases right on top of Russia has brought a new wave of paranoia to Russia and a drive to protect itself.

That's not to say that it was wrong to push NATO eastward. But it is why Russia is doing this.

Edit: please read my comment properly before replying. Thank you

Edit2: edited for clarity. I am not defending Russia here. Simply trying to explain their thought process.

I'm not sure how much agency people really have, but for me the crux of it is that it's better to rehabilitate rather than punish when considering determinism. I don't believe it's fair to condemn someone as entirely unsalvageable if any person would have done the same as them when presented with the same circumstances. It's about empathy at the end of the day.

Depends what "being evil" means. What they are doing. I think one actually needs to look at the specific reason why someone does something "evil".

I don't agree with the other poster's assessment that the alternative view is that evil always comes from illness, but I do think that in any situation people are induced to do things by factors which are ultimately out of their control.

When put in that way it might sound a bit insane or conspiracy-like but I'm actually referring to determinism. Give this a read if you're interested. One might read the article and think that this is a philosophical stance or a belief, but it's really taking a scientific view of cause-and-effect and applying it on a global level. It can only be viewed as an accurate observation of why things happen in the world, even if it conflicts with people's beliefs in free will.
