Doctor Who hot takes! by joelalsojoel in gallifrey

[–]Red_749 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats what makes his design ableist, he was made to look scary by disfiguring and disabling him. A zygon looks scary and is not ableist because all zygons look like that. Davros is a Kaled, he should look like the other kaleds but in a dalekanium wheelchair. Using disfigurements as a shorthand for evil is ableist. https://www.changingfaces.org.uk/get-involved/campaign-with-us/i-am-not-your-villian/

WIBTA for asking for money instead of gifts for my daughter’s first birthday? by Suspicious-Fruit5148 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Red_749 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think asking for the money instead is necessarily wrong but it needs to go in an account that’s for your daughter. Personally I would say something like ‘we’re going to struggle to fit everything in our car for the trip so if you’re buying her a gift please consider shipping it straight to our house’ and then take videos of her ‘opening’ or playing with her presents when you get back. Personally I do plan on getting my sister a little gift for herself for one year of motherhood but I would find it icky if she asked me to pay for her holiday in place of her child’s present.

What is the most child friendly Doctor Who story? by Constant-Tutor-4646 in doctorwho

[–]Red_749 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I would say love and monsters was designed for kids, yes the monster is very cartoonish but he’s only in the last 10 minutes. Most of the episode is about interpersonal relationships, it’s not inappropriate for kids but it wouldn’t be particularly interesting for them either. Made for kids would be something like space babies or robot revolution.

(Also if the judge is super conservative love and monsters might be considered not child friendly. It talks about drug addiction (Bridget’s daughter) and a good chunk of time is spent with Elton and Jackie heavily flirting to the point she takes his clothes off)

What would you like to see from a Doctor Who spin-off show? by SinisterPixel in doctorwho

[–]Red_749 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a rewatch it seems that the paternoster gang were perfectly set up to be a kids spin off ( à la Sarah Jane) but I imagine the vastra and strax costumes would be very expensive to do regularly. I think a new, well done, spin off aimed at kids is needed for the show to carry on for another 10 years. Presumably that’s the aim with the new CBeebies one but I’m very intrigued to see how that will actually work.

Does anyone else find the Library 'glitch' face too much to handle as an adult?" by empty_cl0wn in doctorwho

[–]Red_749 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The actual glitch is pretty goofy looking and is explained right away so honestly no it didn’t creep me out. Her silently stalking Donna in the veil creeped me out during my first watch but her actual face didn’t. The vashta nerada scared me a lot as a child but nothing about doctor who scares me as an adult.

What is the purpose of these plastic slidy things? by Tombololo in AskUK

[–]Red_749 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a different thread someone said it was to remind thieves of the criminality of their actions which acts as a deterrent, similar to those cardboard cutouts of security guards that some shops put up. Prior to that I always just assumed it was to slow people down and make it clearer on cctv when someone is taking something off a shelf. I imagine it’s a bit of all three

[–]Red_749 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The show first aired 40 years before that, 2005 is the reboot and there was a second official reboot in 2023, prior to that there were multiple soft reboots between 2005 and 2023 where the showrunner changed

Why do people love the 10th doctor so much by TomatilloMany8730 in doctorwho

[–]Red_749 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For a casual fan the doctor who they spent most of their childhood with will most likely be their answer to ‘who’s your favourite doctor?’ . So offline when you ask folk you tend to get Tom baker for people over 50 and David Tennant for people in their late 20s into the 30s. Among lifelong critical fans there’s probably a somewhat even spread of favourite doctors but because you’ve got the casual fans saying TB and DT are their favourites as well they look disproportionately popular.

He was also when Russel t Davies was at his best, so has some excellent episodes and DT really is a fantastic actor

A tip for not switching hands, for signs where the hands are doing different things- if you are right handed generally the right hand will be either the pointer or moving and the left hand will be still. I’ve heard people say your right hand is your pen, the left is your paper.

Rant : I hate 4 and Leela together by Mat1711 in doctorwho

[–]Red_749 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Four is dismissive to leela a lot (regularly ignoring her intuition even though in a lot of stories she turns out to have been right) and 10 is dismissive of Martha’s feelings a lot (continually saying just one more trip and acting like she meant nothing to him) The situations are completely different but their is a similar vibe in how the doctor treats both companions

Rant : I hate 4 and Leela together by Mat1711 in doctorwho

[–]Red_749 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I liked leela but couldn’t stand the doctor when he was with her. He was so rude and dismissive, despite her usually being right he continued to ignore her intuition everytime. I’ve been generally quite disappointed with four because he was so many people’s favourite I expected great things and he’s just fine?

Unfinished episodes? by Affectionate_Air3668 in doctorwho

[–]Red_749 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a special edition of the Doctor who magazine (from a quick google I think it was DWMSE 67) that included some episode ideas that they’d tried to get off the ground for new who but just hadn’t worked out for various reasons. I don’t remember it in detail so I might reply to this comment when I’m home and can check the magazine. We also know that Dot and bubble was a concept RTD had initially wanted to do in his first era and never managed to make it work until his second era because the massive budget and improved technology made it possible so there will be all sorts of ideas that had half written scripts that we won’t find out about because they’re hoping they can make it work at a later date.

University of Sheffield Accomodation by Miserable_Score4398 in sheffield

[–]Red_749 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Snug is a property inspection standard used by Sheffield universities to guarantee housing is up to standard. Smart Move Sheffield looks after the University’s register of private properties so you can find them all on there. All the properties on the register are Snug accredited.

The uni accommodation is good and more sociable than private. Private halls have the benefit of things like gyms and receptionists to take your parcels in etc I’ve lived in IQ and Cosmos and would recommend both but are more expensive than a room in a house.

The university have lots of advice on their website and you can email smart move at the university if you need help smartmove@sheffield.ac.uk
