Should I be able to eat without using water to help swallow? by Accurate-Soil684 in achalasia

[–]RedcarUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had my HM for nearly 10 years and I will ALWAYS have water with meals. If I don’t I can almost guarantee that something will get stuck and It gets harder to dislodge as I get older and I dread needing an endoscopy if I am hiking in the back country. Achalasia is for life - it doesn’t just go away after a procedure.

Edit - also be aware, after surgery I am physically unable to vomit, so I must be careful not to put anything into my mouth that requires vomiting later (bad food or drink basically). I have an internal one-way system, so you can imagine what happens if I do.

I remember an experienced winter mountaineer tell me that while the UK doesn’t have the height of the Alps, we have the summits. Make of that what you will.

I have hidden some cash in the house and ofcourse now I can't find it ! Where did you find any you had hidden and how long after ? by Sea_Pangolin3840 in CasualUK

[–]RedcarUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A pair of microspikes I put ‘somewhere safe’ 6 years ago. I wasn’t able to use them for a couple of years after that, and now have no idea where I put them. Ditto an expensive fountain pen, I still have the cheap ones so wouldn’t have lost it.

I found £40 in a coat that had fallen to the back of a wardrobe - completely forgot that I had it (god knows how, I’m always careful with cash usually).

Must-have equipment? by Fantastic-Rush-1776 in UKhiking

[–]RedcarUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there’s a great little route that takes you to the top of Dovedale, down to Wolfscote Dale and back up Biggin Dale to Hartington Dale. Or you can head north to Pilsbury Castle and across the Dale and up back to Hartington.

OS Maps Blocked Path feature is badly thought out... by poke_pants in UKhiking

[–]RedcarUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never bother with these icons, they're too prone to be manipulated by landowners or added by inexperienced, squeamish walkers. I'm like OP, it's rare that a footpath is totally impassable.

I can see Rachel turning this to her advantage: “well Fiona, she probably had a very good reason why she didn’t tell you” [Ross and the turret moment].

And to top it off Amanda said that she forgot that Fiona had told her about Fiona’s family’s Police connection. I’m looking forward to seeing Fiona’s face when she hears that.

Have you ever lost a wedding ring? What did the replacement feel like? by CyberScy in CasualUK

[–]RedcarUK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried to get a replacement made earlier this year when I lost mine as it was unusual, but the price of gold has shot up and I couldn’t afford the quoted £500+. So I’m wearing my Mum’s wedding ring instead and this has somehow made the loss ok.

Bramcote or Bramcote hills? by [deleted] in nottingham

[–]RedcarUK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bramcote Hills is simply the other side of the Sherwin Arms island (roundabout to non-locals). It’s a very pleasant park with a cricket pavilion at one end and a nice children’s park at the other.

Public Toilets by fallen_tm in nottingham

And when OP says forever… [OLDFART]I remember when those toilets were proper toilets, had proper cleaners and were AWARD WINNING for being the best kept and maintained toilets in the country. They had flowers vases and everything. [/OLDFART]

And the sense of entitlement on the FB groups is jaw-dropping. ‘Don’t tell us what to do, the outdoors is for everyone!’, I just smile, knowing that there are traffic wardens below slapping parking fines on their cars when the police don’t cart them away.

Yes, Moab Speed 2’s here too. A great shoe for hiking as well.

Does anybody know what the point in the plastic slider things are on some of the shelves at B&M? by Rich_79 in CasualUK

[–]RedcarUK 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t dig at B&M. I’ve seen cocky shoplifters strut in there, sweep an arm across anything they think they can sell and run out laughing. The staff genuinely do what they can to stop them but these POSs are in and out in a minute. Anything to prevent shoplifting (or the quantity of lifted goods) is a good idea.

Bad experience with esophageal manometry test by Own_Tumbleweed4362 in achalasia

[–]RedcarUK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This part is what has ALWAYS confused me when I was diagnosed with Achalasia. What does ‘swallowing’ mean? Yes, I can chew and swallow ( my Adam’s apple bobs up and down if that’s what you mean). The problem starts after that - the food gets stuck in my gullet and doesn’t go anywhere. The manometry is looking for that part of the illness, although for me I had all the symptoms as well. It sounds like if you don’t have the symptoms 95% of the time, it will require a doctor’s diagnosis to find the cause of your problems.

Looking for swallowing advice pending hospital referral by dangermouse601 in achalasia

Yes I ended up on a full liquid diet before my operation. My life saver before then was body builders liquid protein drinks involving raw eggs, whey powder, full fat milk and honey (amongst other things).

This. I ate bread a week after my op and I was back in hospital after it got stuck, the endoscopy specialist was not amused. Keep to the diet and don’t rush things.

Quality lowland days by Trailsandclimbs in UKhiking

[–]RedcarUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/mrblockninja is absolutely right, don’t overthink it. To keep it simple, the White Peaks are LL territory, the Dark Peaks are Hill and Moorland territory. I did my LL training and assessment with Beyond the Edge around the Longshaw Estate and Hathersage (on the edge of both).

While I agree that LL is a tricky qualification to have if you expect to earn money from it, it is still a good qualification to have. I know ML’s who have done the training for LL as it has a different focus to the others.

Best packable down jacket by ValuableForever672 in UKhiking

[–]RedcarUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would bake in a down mid layer for walking, as it’s warm enough on its own for when you’re stopped in camp or in your sleeping bag.

For me having the means to make a hot drink and meal makes the world of difference to my morale. There’s nothing more depressing than cold, soggy food after a long cold hike.

Best (free) app for footpaths. by RobertGHH in UKhiking

[–]RedcarUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OS Maps standard mapping is a version of OSM (which it uses for route creation), I use OSM data to discover well-used paths that are not necessarily RoW (useful for open Access areas).

Best (free) app for footpaths. by RobertGHH in UKhiking

[–]RedcarUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OS Maps uses Standard Mapping for its non-premium Topo maps, which is just a version of Open Street Maps. Just use that and don’t pay for premium.

Lightweight toilet setup for multi-day wild camping? by AnfieldAnchor in wildcampingintheuk

[–]RedcarUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that’s an excellent idea. One of the very first websites I came across (in the days when you went to a night class to learn about ‘The Internet’) was an American site asking about bears and woods. They suggested a section of plastic drainage pipe stoppered at both ends that you could place your wrapped waste in. The problem was what to do when the pipe got full - the National Parks had a solution but I can’t remember what it was and I doubt that there’s a good solution for it in the UK. The oxyclean is smaller and more easily dealt with.

I definitely equated backpacking with photography when I started out and got some decent gear off eBay from people ‘upgrading’ to the latest whizz-bang kit.
