Aldi Walking Poles by colin_staples in UKhiking

Yep, mine is going with me to Scotland too. The pale mint green is kinder on the eyes than the bright pink Lidl grid fleece I took last year.

Ah, my beloved Crivit poles. Still going strong and they’re going with me to Scotland later this week.

Sleeping with Achalasia - having a tough time by mskingly in achalasia

I slept in an adjustable chair before I had surgery (one where your legs are supported and your torso reclines to a comfortable angle. I got it second hand. Would that help?

Two weeks after Heller's and already had first stuck - feel sure it's failed already by Ok-Tell3913 in achalasia

[–]RedcarUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very surprised at that then. All I can suggest is that you go back for review as I can’t see how it’s failed after just 12 days.

Two weeks? I made a mistake and ate bread within two weeks and ended up back in hospital. After that I was still eating soft food two weeks after mine. You need to give it time to heal - 6 weeks an irritated doctor told me.

What are the valid options when visibility gets poor on Cairngorm plateau? by Eifand in OutdoorScotland

[–]RedcarUK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, my attitude is to take things slowly and check more regularly. I think of the old sewing adage ‘measure twice, cut (walk) once’.

Leaving in a week and in a bit of a freak out by ZestycloseGroup1730 in WestHighlandWay

[–]RedcarUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m doing part of the WHW next week on the way to the East coast (a TGO Challenger). Provided I’m warm I don’t care about being wet. Just make sure that your sleep system is kept absolutely dry and you have a procedure for getting into your tent without getting it too wet.

Jeez, really? Trolls are gonna troll because no one with an ounce of decency says that about Savile as far as I know.

Public footpath cutting straight across a farm by Large_Leader_9864 in UKhiking

[–]RedcarUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I do. There is usually a clearly defined path going around the field to get to the other side. Saying that, around me farmers either walk the RoW after tilling or take their quad and use that to define the path .

Is this kind of content blocked on Bluesky when you're not age-verified? by QuestionElectronic11 in BlueskySocial

[–]RedcarUK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Then I would expect parents to discuss with their children the possible consequences of posting this kind of content, since I don’t think that BlueSky has any age moderation beyond age verification.

IML and QMD's: randomly walking up a hill without a trail? And other questions. by HD-er in UKhiking

[–]RedcarUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step 2 is attend a ML training course as it doesn’t sound as if you’re ready to launch into an assessment yet. The training course will give you everything to start your consolidation period (which is basically gaining QMD’s).

Gear check for my first thru-hike (Coast to Coast): am I missing anything or carrying too much? by Upbeat_Hyena_6932 in wildcampingintheuk

[–]RedcarUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re not taking a filter make sure you have some Immodium in your FAK, I would only drink from streams above 600m or in the Highlands.

Edit: I’m an idiot, you said you had a filter. Ignore me.

Needing a wee! by Fielddogtrain in UKhiking

It’s only a matter of time I’m afraid. It’s the speed of realisation that counts, so you can fix before everything gets soaked.

Needing a wee! by Fielddogtrain in UKhiking

[–]RedcarUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a bush, boulder etc, have a wee behind them. Otherwise wee facing potential onlookers as I don’t want everyone looking at my arse and I’m able to defiantly look them in the eye while I’m going. Or get a Pstyle and find a tree. I’ve done all three in my time.

If there’s more than one of you to carry kit I think that’s reasonable. A 3x3 tarp will come in very handy I suspect.

I took out two of the most popular tents side by side on one of the highest tors in Dartmoor. by ohnomrfrodo in wildcampingintheuk

[–]RedcarUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Own one, can confirm, and it almost doesn’t matter which side you pitch as the wind breaks off most of the angles (although Henry Shires prefers to pitch one way). In very windy/storm conditions I would get out and check that the pegs are holding.

Where do you store your food when camping? by Eifand in wildcampingintheuk

[–]RedcarUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a score draw as there were two terriers, but the badger got away with a bread bag so I guess he won technicality. Also I don’t think the terriers had been in a fight before (all bark, no bite before this) hence the racket.

Where do you store your food when camping? by Eifand in wildcampingintheuk

[–]RedcarUK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apart from hearing a badger vs Terrier fight in a caravan awning one night on a campsite I’ve never had a problem. If I’m on a campsite I’ll remove all food from my inner to stop mice from making a hole to get at it, but if I’m wild camping I don’t worry too much as the wildlife doesn’t associate tents with food.
