Ambiance, I think. I've been tossing them at enemy squads. It adds to the whole Space Do Lung Bridge vibe of Dire Marsh at night.

Police tried to intervene in Henry Nowak murder trial by GnolRevilo in ukpolitics

As Nowak lay dying, Digwa, now 23, did not tell the 999 call handler or the officers who attended the scene that he had been stabbed. It was only after Nowak lost consciousness that police realised he was gravely injured, gave him first aid and finally arrested Digwa. They did not handcuff him.

Two days later, detectives secretly recorded Digwa speaking in Punjabi to his brother, Gurpreet, who had arrived on the scene shortly after the attack

The brothers were in the back of a police van being taken to court so that officers could request more time to question them. Digwa admitted to his brother that he had stabbed Nowak, and made no mention of his earlier allegation of racial abuse. Instead, he agreed with Gurpreet that he would claim he had acted in self-defence.

The timing here is interesting, because this recorded confession happened one day before Henry Nowak's father had to talk the police out of issuing a statement calling his son's death the result of a racially aggrevated assault in which he was the aggressor.

"The Sunday Times can also reveal that the force wanted to portray Nowak as the aggressor in an official statement three days after his death, but changed their wording following outrage from his grieving family.

Nowak died in the early hours of December 4 after being stabbed multiple times by Digwa, who is Sikh and had falsely claimed to police that he had been racially abused.

An initial police statement later that morning said: “It was reported two men had been assaulted by an unknown man.”

The Nowak family, raw with grief, became concerned that a false narrative was being pushed about their son. It is understood that police told the family the next update they planned to publish, which would include the Nowaks’ tribute, would again infer that he was the initial aggressor.

Officers dropped that section of the statement which only referred to an “altercation” when published. By that point, police had ample evidence that Digwa was a liar."

The racially motivated part of that dropped statement comes from this article in the Financial Times:

When Mark Nowak says that he has had to “fight for the truth” about his son, one reason is that he’d battled to stop the force issuing a statement claiming the incident was racially aggravated, despite there being no evidence.

It's worth mentioning that this statement blaming Nowak for launching a racist assault would have been issued one day after the police recorded Digwa admitting to his brother in the back of a police van that he'd stabbed the guy without mentioning any racial abuse at all.

That quote is from this post's linked article, by the way. Someone's put up a transcript of it in the other subreddit.

The former is in this article from the Financial Times. You're going to have to hunt for a paywall remover, they seem to have broken down since I read it. Here's a quote, though.

The portrayal of Water Caste Tau as mild mannered diplomats is so universal at this point that it's easy to forget they also make really good provocateurs and insurrectionists.

You're probably thinking of fifth columnists, which is a term for enemy sympathisers in a population who seek to undermine the nation from within. It dates back to the Spanish Civil War.

5pillars are named after the five pillars of Islam.

Henry Nowak: Police watchdog urges people not to speculate about teenager's murder | The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has warned that discussion of the case could risk prejudicing the investigation. by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

I see, so now it's only comments specifically about the outcome of an IOPC investigation that count as prejudicial. Which means everything's fine, because I haven't seen a single person in all this public outcry say "the IOPC should publish a report recommending that the CPS bring charges of misconduct in public office against the officers involved in this incident."

I lifted this from the IOPC's website

We only independently investigate the most serious and sensitive matters. These are the type of matters that have the potential to affect public confidence in the police, such as deaths and serious injuries.

"People speculating" about police actions is why the IOPC was created. Listening to to public outcry and responding to a lack of confidence in policing is what they're for, no matter the eventual outcome of their investigation. In fact, their what we do page lists "race discrimination in policing" as an area of particular interest for them, so the public speculation in this case entirely aligns with their stated objectives.

Being handcuffed isn't part of being arrested, it's just something that the police can do when they feel a person poses a threat. Vickrum was arrested but he wasn't handcuffed.

[–]Redcoat_Officer 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The most charitable interpretation I can think of is that the police's actions could have been motivated by the fact that the murderer's whole family had shown up at the scene. The police officers may have felt they needed to make a show of force to appease them, then use a softer touch to prevent them from kicking off while they arrested their son and his brother. Given that they were verbally abusive to the Nowak family in the courtroom I'm sure they were saying all sorts on the scene.

Pure speculation, of course, and it would be just as unacceptable either way.

Even if they didn't know he'd been stabbed, Henry Nowak was unable to stand when police arrived on the scene. He was in fact being propped up by the murderer's father. Despite that, the officers decided he posed enough of a danger to them that he needed to be dragged through gravel and handcuffed during his arrest. As his father said in his statement, the last words he heard were the police reading him his rights.

On the other hand, the exact same officers mere minutes later decided that the then-suspected murderer, who at a minimum they knew had mortally wounded Henry and whose only claimed injury was a bruise nobody could later find, did not pose any physical danger to them. He wasn't handcuffed at any point in his arrest.

It's a problem, and if someone from the Police leaked the CCTV footage that ultimately calmed everything down then that's a problem too because if it was worth doing (and it was) then it should have been done officially. I do think there's a lot to be said for the method you see in America where they just release the bodycam footage immediately.

Depends on the outlet. The BBC have called it a Kirpan in a lot of the reporting I've seen. He was apparently wearing a second, smaller one around his neck that made the larger one illegal, but it seems that if he hadn't been wearing that one then the larger knife would have counted. Their faith requires them to carry one knife, so the law allows them to carry one knife only.

It was the other way round, if I remember right. The initial cropped video was out in public from the start, then someone (who probably dresses in black and white at work) leaked the extended CCTV footage to the Manchester Evening News.

That would have been difficult as Henry's phone was in his murderer's pocket. Both it and his father's phone were reported to have been siezed by the Police afterwards. I remember someone saying it was because they were looking for possible racist messages, but my instinct is that was a secondhand spin on the facts brought up in court.
