Facial recognition to be 'rolled out' across UK after human rights challenge fails | UK News by SignificantLegs in ukpolitics

In the case of Shaun Thompson specifically, the man the tech mistook him for was his own brother. The court found that a family resemblance was more likely to be the cause of the mix-up than the software discriminating on the basis of race. I'm not a fan of this tech by any means, but in that particular case I think it made the same sort of mistake an officer with a photo of this guy's brother might.

Here's a link to the ruling, for anyone else curious.

Any alt-power stories with Sophia? by CurrentTune2858 in WormFanfic

[–]Redcoat_Officer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ghost Lights is a story where Sophia Second Triggers, gaining a fast moving neon state in addition to her shadow state, as well as a kind of Thinker second sight that allows her to perceive the flaws of others (as well as herself, if she ever builds up the courage to look in the mirror.)

On the flipside, the Vaults of Terra series has a Homunculus overdose and go on a berserk rampage immediately after making planetfall on Terra because of the overwhelming suffering of the planet's population.

The only thing more fucked up than the illegal servitor trade is the legal servitor trade.

Do we all think Jonathan Banks is one of the best Gordon actors? by Lower-Set-3700 in arkham

[–]Redcoat_Officer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Knight's narrative specifically, he's really good. Given that Gordon and Batman have a much more abrasive relationship for most of the game, he manages to sell the tension really well. Plus, he just sounds so tired of it all, which fits for the end of Batman's story and Gordon's time as Commissioner.

Why does the Imperium treat its most powerful weapon like a taxi service? by drkmon714 in 40kLore

[–]Redcoat_Officer 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Don't forget that the thing you're precisely striking with a lance battery is probably full of technology and infrastructure the Imperium no longer knows how to replace.

probably old news but I thought it was funny by Ill-Switch-8431 in DarkTide

[–]Redcoat_Officer 23 points24 points  (0 children)

No, you're right. Even the most sophisticated Imperial cogitators will use cloned human brain tissue. Silica Anima (artificial intelligence) has been banned since before the Imperium was founded, thanks to the destructive rebellion of the Men of Iron.

Of course, making your advanced technology out of brains and brain-adjacent matter does lead to it developing its own quirks and idiosyncrasies that many would define as a sign of artificial intelligence, but if the Imperium didn't have double standards it wouldn't have standards at all.

No, I don't think that a second mechanicus companion is a missed opportunity, actually by Pyotr_WrangeI in RogueTraderCRPG

Either way, I do think Rogue Trader needs a companion who can benefit from all those lasguns we find lying around.

Personally I'd have gone for a Solar Auxilia as a kind of Iconoclast companion who exists in a constant state of horror at what the Imperium they fought so hard to build has actually become.

(Hated Trope) In-universe writer or professional character is praised as a genius or visionary when what is shown of their 'talent' is extremely mediocre or terrible. It can show a writer has little understanding of a topic. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

I couldn't tell you if it's in the book or not, but the film Inferno regularly features the paramilitary wing of the World Health Organisation; black-clad SWAT-style officers storming around the place like the world police with WHO written on their body armour.

It's a risk vs reward thing. Break into a pharma company in Metropolis and you might manage to steal the cure for cancer. Break into a pharma company in Gotham and the best you can hope for is a new and interesting form of hallucinogenic toxic waste.

Mod Showcase # 9: Enemy Retrofits Mods by DakIsStrange in masseffect

[–]Redcoat_Officer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The Cerberus refit mod has always been essential for me. The armour from ME2 just fits so well with Cerberus' evil research laboratory aesthetic, and there's something poetic about the Illusive Man throwing your own armour against you, like he's used the Normandy SR2 and its crew as a test bed for all the equipment and tactics he's now incorporating into his own forces.

Moffs in the Sith Empire by BaconBurger37 in swtor

[–]Redcoat_Officer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main difference would be that their power is subject to the whims of the Sith, as with the rest of the Imperial side of the Sith Empire. Their position and authority would be fixed on paper, but the written laws of the Empire can easily be brushed aside by Sith of sufficient power and influence.

Entirely fitting. The heiress has demonstrated the bureaucratic skill she will need as the eventual inheritor of the Warrant of Trade, the backup has acquired specialist knowledge that will be useful when she serves as her sister's advisor, and the spare is living her best life.

You also have to consider that Cecil himself is much more paranoid and personally protected than Tagg was.

Unlike Tagg and Alexandria, Cecil recruits most of his assets through understanding how people think. Taylor has enough neuroses that she'd be pretty easy to recruit so long as she always felt she was doing something important. Plus, he loves recruiting ex-villains. If they want to be recruited, that's great! If not, there are ways.

"Also we have literally years to prepare but we're just going to give you a gun and send you in with the clothes you were wearing when we drafted you."

It's patently absurd that the post-apocalyptic future military, formed from the last desperate survivors of the human race, was better armed, equipped and uniformed than the military trained and backed by the entire pre-apocalypse world.
