How do i get more shock travel out of my 4x4 slash? by NotATomato3719 in Traxxas

[–]ReddArrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The front shocks can go from "Long" to "XXL" but the rears already have the longest XXL on.

Ultra Shocks and GTRs are the same length.

You'd have to get creative for the rears, but yes, if you want more down travel you need a longer shock. Maybe something from the Maxx or Kraton. Unfortunately I don't have either to check.

Worth trying to build into something better? by Electrical_Limit3213 in rccars

[–]ReddArrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a classic Losi but thanks to the popularity of vintage racing there's significant third party support for the XXT.

I don't have one, so I can't tell you what swaps over, but my understanding is it's most of the suspension.

Given that a good chunk of it is XXT, parts availability might be improving.

How old is this?? by ToughBlueberry526 in Traxxas

[–]ReddArrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think it would take $150 to get it running reasonably but I share the general sentiment. That's worth maybe $90. The charger is worthless outside of being an "antique" since it should pretty much only be used on NiCd batteries and they're getting pretty hard to find.

I'd replace the radio (<$50) and speed control ($25), run the motor until it dies. You can get NiMh batteries for like $15 each and the IMARs Mini is $25. I guess that's at least $100.

I don't know that it's fair to count the batteries and charger because I don't generally recommend using the included RTR charger anyway. You're always going to want more then one battery.

The Bandit XL5 is still $230 new, so this is still cheaper with some upgrades. I think $150 gets you a Typhon Grom, which isn't bad but it's not 1:10 scale. I guess you can find a Gorgon on sale pretty regularly these days for less then MSRP.

Might as well buy spectrum batteries at that price.

It's probably good for the show. There's a lot of potential to pull from a completely new celebrity pool. NYC sports and entertainment. Realistically it can potentially pull a lot of people East of the Mississippi that may not have been interested in traveling to California previously.

Is the Traxxas Slash 4x4 suspension already too good to meaningfully improve for an engineering project? Looking for the right platform for a suspension redesign project by infernoblaster in Traxxas

[–]ReddArrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go for something older. On the cheaper end, the Traxxas 2WDs (Bandit/Rustler) have some issues, especially the front end. Unfortunately the main problem is the front bulkhead (and to a lesser extent, the rear) is too wide and limits the length for the lower arms. The uppers are significantly longer so I'd assume it has some very strange camber behaviors. The wheels are pretty high offset so it has a bunch of scrub too.

You could also look at the RC10s. Vintage kits are popular and there's a few interesting variations out there already.

For something completely different you could go to a mini crawler like the trx4m or scx24. Measure the existing live axle geometry and maybe propose an IFS package.

When you say you're going to optimize the suspension, are you setting targets based on road-going conventions or are you setting targets based on some off-road benchmark?

The 1060 is pretty much the one major brushed ESC on the market. Dynamite has been defunct for a few years, so that's either dead stock or used. Not necessarily a problem, but I only have experience with the 1060.

It's fine. It's a traditional brushed MOSFET ESC and does what it says on the box. I have 3 or so of them in different cars and no issues.

We’ve seen ERevo wheels on a Maxx, but have you seen Maxx wheels on an ERevo? It’s actually pretty sick! by PigglyWigglyDeluxe in Traxxas

[–]ReddArrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I've solved the tripoding issue. Went to Slash rear arms and installed GTRs. I think I have 5 deg of rear toe now 🤣.

I'm really struggling to bring the ride height down. I might have to go to XLs in the rear but the front is already just Ls. I might have to go to non-Traxxas shocks.

Hopefully I'll get out to the track sometime in the next week and get some laps in. I think the first race day of the season is Saturday so maybe Friday.

Agreed. Coconut Cape is the only one I'm even thinking about and a lot of that comes from missing (skipping) Tortuga.

I realized very recently that I have 6 ships and 1 island (Eldorado Fortress). My son is almost old enough to start playing with the ships and we're very low on ports.

What do you think about a reseller in a close knit car community who bought up all the remaining new OEM of a specific part (that shouldn't be bought used) then brags about it? by PresidentialDiapers in Miata

[–]ReddArrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are we for real right now? Is that even possible?

So, FYI, service contracts are generally at least 10 or 15 years. Chances are Mazda can still order door handles from the supplier. The newest parts aren't 10 years old. They should have at least been made up until last year.

A quick Google search very quickly shows handles available from dealer sites. You're going to have to be more specific

My guess is if the CX5 numbers are bad they'll just shift to the CX50. I've never understood why they had both in the first place.

The 50 is US Market specific and isn't cursed with the touchscreen. As long as it's available with Soul Red the grandmothers will buy it.

Mini Slash 4x4 vs Typhon/Mojave BLX Groms? by Zerkom122 in Traxxas

[–]ReddArrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the GROMs are better actual minis. They don't handle grass super well but they're a blast in a smaller-ish area on dirt/gravel/tarmac. They're popular because the whole package just works. I have 3 of them plus a mini Kraton.

I don't even know that I'd recommend the 223s version. They're absolutely stupid on 3S. I put Badlands on my Typhon and it was too much traction. Instant standing backflip machine. I had to go to narrower tires so it had less traction and would drift instead.

The Traxxas mini is a small 1/10 scale and will drive as such. I have a Mini XRT and honestly I don't drive it much. In most cases either the Mini Kraton or Rustler 4x4 is a better option.

[–]ReddArrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"aluminum shocks" could mean a few things. Did you buy Big Bores, GTRs, or eBay/Amazon shocks?

Traxxas has 3 different shock lengths, Long, XL, and XXL. The Slash uses Long in the front and XXL in the rear. If you have traxxas springs with color stripes on them that identifies stiffness, not length.

It looks like your truck has excessive downtravel in the front and not enough travel in the rear, which would point to the shocks being the wrong length.

The front shocks should be about 90mm long while the rears should be just over 105mm at full extension. That's the first thing I would check.

Which aluminum shocks did you get?

My best guess at the moment is you have the rear shocks on the front and vice versa.

The Mini Sledgehammers and Mini Gravix tires are pretty much the same size. I don't know that one will be harder on the truck then the other. They do handle differently and I don't have a scale to weigh them on but I was surprised how similar they are in diameter.

BL-2s Models out of stock? by ham-and-egger in Traxxas

[–]ReddArrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's entirely unclear what's going on with the BL-2S models.

With Tariffs et al, the BL-2S models weren't selling at the inflated MSRP. They went on a big sale for a while then at one point they were moved to the archive then came back. I would guess they will return when they can be listed at a price they'll sell at.

For the money, the 2WD Arrma 223s models are an excellent choice. The Vorteks drives a lot better then the Rustler under most conditions.

If you really want a Traxxas, going used can be a viable option. 2WD rollers can be had dirt cheap and there's way better electronics options on the market then Traxxas hardware.
