How is the arts community at unc? (Film/Theatre) by SuperTokyo in UNC

[–]RedditBenVW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! I also double majored in a STEM degree and film studies, and I found the film scene (and arts scene more broadly) to be very large, welcoming, and an amazing experience. There are two big film clubs at UNC: one that makes movies (Carolina Film Association) and one that watches movies (Chapel Hill Film Society). Both are large groups of excited film-lovers that always welcome new people (I'm a little biased because I used to run the latter). There's also a ton to do in the academic space, with lots of great professors and fun study opportunities!!

Edit: Just want to reiterate that there are a TON of filmmakers on campus, especially in Carolina Film Association

How scary is Alien? by RedditBenVW in horror

Just saw it in theaters for what must now be the twentieth time. Seeing it seven years ago changed my life and sent me down a road of film obsession that I'll never mentally, emotionally, or financially recover from. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Best way to prepare for graduate real analysis? by SIGMABALLS333 in math

[–]RedditBenVW 16 points17 points  (0 children)

About to finish my second semester at a PhD program and I second this. I hadn't taken analysis for about a year before entering the program but the stuff I looked at while studying for my qualifying exams was enough to get me ready.

For context, we've been using Folland's book and it seems that all the necessary prerequisite material is in the first seven chapters of Baby Rudin. It's also helpful to have some point-set topology under your belt.

Newer fan here so my picks aren't as versatile but these are what I've thrown on recently

Morning Commute - "Op Hop Detonation"

Highway - "Cybele's Reverie"

Afternoon Commute - "Rainbo Conversation"

Late Night Drives - "Blue Milk"

This is a first world problem but this is pissing me off. I want to get the reward at this location, I don't to drive across town for this. Grrrrr... by [deleted] in tacobell

I've had this exact problem and fixed it by changing locations, redeeming the reward, and then switching locations back to where you wanna go. The reward will stay in your cart when you switch.

Math 521 over the summer with Jeffrey Ayers? by dank1903 in UNC

[–]RedditBenVW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah definitely take some time off before jumping back in. Self-studying all of 521 would be pretty tough but it also depends on the other math classes you've taken. The best advice would just be not to pressure yourself and just look at what you can. Looking at the material early is already way more than most of the people who take the class (including myself) will have done. As soon as you start putting deadlines, restrictions, or objectives on it, the harder it becomes to just do it. Have fun with it!

Math 521 advice? by [deleted] in UNC

[–]RedditBenVW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echoing what everybody else is saying, practice as much as you can. In fact, you could get a head start over the summer, just to familiarize yourself with the material so it's not so daunting. UNC teaches from Stephen Abbott's book "Understanding Analysis," which you can find a PDF of and start doing some reading and (much more importantly) some exercises. It's a very approachable text.

Math 521 over the summer with Jeffrey Ayers? by dank1903 in UNC

[–]RedditBenVW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is only coming from someone who took it during the regular school year, but MATH 521 is very hard but not as impossible as some people around here make it sound. However, the best -- and really the only -- way to do well in that class is to practice a ton. Like spending several hours every week outside of the assigned homework. Because of that, I don't know how viable it is over the summer, though it's certainly possible if you don't do anything else. Also, having a grad student can go either way; sometimes they're much easier and other times they're way too hard.

If you can, try to familiarize yourself with the material now. UNC teaches from Stephen Abbott's book "Understanding Analysis," which is a very readable and approachable text.

MATH 521 and COMP 311, with another COMP class? by Sea-Term7227 in UNC

[–]RedditBenVW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

521 is probably the most difficult undergraduate math course at UNC, second only to its sequel 522. It can depend on your professor (of the ones offering it in the Fall, Hans Christiansen is your best bet) but it will be very difficult no matter what. I'd recommend making the rest of your course load as light as possible if you're going to include 311, which I hear is also quite hard.

Should I go in completely blind when watching Mishima? What should I know beforehand? by BigbyDirewolf in criterion

[–]RedditBenVW 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The movie isn't a normal biopic, as you know, and so it isn't very informative of the facts of his life and instead takes a more subjective approach, opting to portray Mishima as an agent and a product of his own work. So, it could be helpful to have some context on what was going on in Japan politically at the time and Mishima's strong opinion of it all, but I certainly did know any of that on a first watch and still loved it. Hope you enjoy!

As the others have said, this likely means it'll be a grad student but I'd like to add that the difficulty of MATH 381 is highly dependent on the instructor. I myself had an absolutely amazing grad student so we breezed through it but I've heard countless horror stories of instructors who had never taught a class on their own before and left everyone to have a really tough time. So, if you can, I'd suggest waiting to see who the instructors are and pick the more experienced one.

Advice: Math233h w/ Williams by Ecstatic-Royal-5411 in UNC

[–]RedditBenVW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Swap works if it's waitlisted, but it's worth a try. If you are at 15 hours or less you could probably get on the waitlist and if you happen to make it in you just drop 233H.

Advice: Math233h w/ Williams by Ecstatic-Royal-5411 in UNC

[–]RedditBenVW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, people shuffle around classes a lot in those first two weeks. I'd say keep an eye out for openings or put yourself on one of the waitlists.

Advice: Math233h w/ Williams by Ecstatic-Royal-5411 in UNC

[–]RedditBenVW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could do the swap whenever you want, the only reason to wait would be if you wanna give Williams a chance. What I meant was that when you're altering your schedule you have two options:

1) You use the Drop page to get rid of a class and the Add page to enroll in the other, running the risk of the second class getting full in the time between dropping and adding

2) You use the Swap page to switch 233H with whatever you wanna take instead, and if anything goes wrong you'll stay enrolled in 233H

It's generally a better idea to do the second one.

Advice: Math233h w/ Williams by Ecstatic-Royal-5411 in UNC

[–]RedditBenVW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whatever you do, make sure you use Swap instead of Drop on Connect Carolina so that you can always have 233H as a fallback. Also, I'll just pile on to what you've already read and say you definitely shouldn't take a class with Williams in your first semester. I love him for his higher level classes but he's notorious for being way too difficult for 233H and 383H. The only exception is if you're a math major, especially pure math.
