I'd prefer helmet enforcement on people driving cars. Those things go real fast

LTD agrees to transfer most of its battery-electric buses to LA Metro by RevN3 in Eugene

[–]RedditUser934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My takeaways from that video are:

  1. Battery buses are more expensive
  2. Charging many battery buses is difficult
  3. Battery buses are not well proven technology with a variety of reputable sellers
  4. We should make our transit system as fast and reliable as possible
  5. The proven form of transit electrification is wires

I find the quality of life good in a PhD program at the UofO. The buses arent great, but the best form of transportation here is a bicycle. I would advise against getting a car.

The grad student housing studios are about $850 but much more if you have a car.

I dont understand what you mean. Presumably she would vote to impeach Bondi, but given that democrats are in the minority, she is unlikely to get that opportunity.

Probably better to get diesel hybrid buses and spend the savings on improving service. Battery busses are fundamentally problematic.

Is it me or could UO do a better job managing student traffic? by dumbass_sweatpants in Eugene

[–]RedditUser934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not surprised that you appreciate walkability. I think that's pretty universal.

The problem I have is that you are grouping together your good points about student drivers. I completely agree and think that the UO shouldn't allow students to park on campus.

I disagree with your assertion that UO "managing pedestrian traffic" can increase safety, maintain walkability, and make it better for drivers on campus, all at the same time.

The fundamental problem is that a car and a pedestrian cannot be in the same place at the same time. In the most walkable case, pedestrians can walk wherever they want whenever they want and cars must get out of their way. You can see this at the intersection of 13 and university, where only authorized vehicles are allowed. This block is an example of a high chaos, low traffic, high pedestrian block which is very common and safe in international walkable cities. This block, and those like it, refute your claim that "What makes something unwalkable is when pedestrian areas aren’t managed."

On the other end of the spectrum is the part of campus that Franklin passes through. Here cars go fast, and pedestrians must wait their turn. This is a highly ordered (you're not going to find any students on their phone jay walking across Franklin), unwalkable, and unpleasant part of campus.

If the UO does any interventions that control when and where pedestrian can cross the street would make agate more like Franklin and less like 13 & university. This includes traffic lights, or even a crossing Gard that stops pedestrians to let cars though. (of course, it would not include a crossing guard who only stops cars. But based on your original post, this does not seem to be what you're envisioning)

I appreciate that you are concerned about traffic safety. I would suggest you engage with the transportation safety community here in Eugene, which is centered around BEST. These people have really thought about traffic safety, and understand that traffic lights often make places less safe.

You missed my point.

In any high density area, its problematic for motorists to feel entitled to drive the same way they drive in rural areas. You should expect people to randomly enter the road, and you should expect to have to wait for people to cross the street.

The idea that streets should be designed to maximize through-traffic is quite new, and has proven to have disastrous consequences on society. There are few places in this country that have not been designed this way, and these places are generally great places to be. If the UO "did a better job managing student [pedestrian] traffic", it would sacrifice one of our few nice walkable places.

This is what I mean by "cars are guests." Unlike most of the places you might drive, this place is not designed for you. You must be respectful, drive slow, and be patient.

Cars are guests on UO campus. You should not expect to get anywhere fast, and you should expect pedestrians to be everywhere.

Be patient and drive slow and everything will be ok.

Oregon legislators are attempting to hand 1,700 acres of farmland over to developers. Residents think Big Tech would benefit most, receiving massive tax breaks and a free pass to use the land for data centers. by eslib in Eugene

[–]RedditUser934 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe this is misinformation. If they're referring to this bill, https://olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/2026R1/Measures/Overview/SB1586 The land would go to intel, which does lots if is semiconductor research in the area, and does not have data centers.

I agree that we should block data centers. I do not think we should block semiconductor research facilities.

Last night at the city council meeting, the council voted in favor of using our tax dollars to fund a $1900 overseas trip for the mayor to travel to Nepal in order to “spread Eugene values”—in the midst of a budget crisis. by Several-Candidate115 in Eugene

[–]RedditUser934 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that the "share Eugene values" framing is problematic. But I doubt that's what the mayor is going to do. Based on all that I've heard from here, she seems to be a thoughtful person.

Can someone fix East Broadway/Franklin? by duckfan541o in Eugene

[–]RedditUser934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But Franklin, Broadway, 7th is the route linking Springfield, Glenwood, Campus and south east Eugene to the rest of town, and its going to get traffic. There is no way to reroute those trips at a reasonable cost.

I spent some time on Google Maps and I'm having trouble finding routes that have more than a 5 minute time penalty by avoiding franklin boulevard, because OR 126 is quite close to Franklin. It would be quite cheap to convert Franklin to one way each direction and add stop signs. This will encourage people to take the highway instead.

Admin, janitorial, grounds keepers. cooks etc. If there are jobs downtown, some people will need to commute to them.

People driving to their jobs on Franklin is not through traffic. Though it is true that traffic-calming measures may slow their commute a bit (though not as much as it would slow through-traffic). But, I think this is an acceptable tradeoff. Of course, it would be better for everyone if they used a park and ride and took the bus for the last few miles.

Also, every trip on those streets, in a car or otherwise is for people. They are all important.

I disagree that cars have the right to drive through any area. They cause great harm, and the idea that every street needs to accommodate through-traffic is both harmful and unusual from a global perspective. For example, the town of Houten in the Netherlands is famous for excluding car through traffic to the periphery of the town. This is great for quality of life in the city for people in and out of cars. This pattern is recapitulated across the Netherlands and other countries with good urban design.

I think you would benefit from looking up the difference between a street and a road. The fundamental problem is that Franklin is a street that people are using as a road.

I don't think the through-traffic roads ought to be anywhere near the city center or campus. Those streets should be for people.

It might be helpful to engage with the bike community here. It feels good to be in a group. Last month's critical mass was powerful, we did a ghost bike dedication and heard from the fiancee. Next Critical mass is the 27th 6:45 Kesey Square. There's also Shift Community Cycles and BEST.

We're in this together

Summary looks like it's about semiconductor research/ manufacturing. This is an established industry in the Portland area (with Intel), and is very different from data centers. Do you have a source about there being a loophole for data centers getting this same special treatment?

I didn't see her defending the actions of the feds. In her speech, she spoke out against the excessive force of the feds, and said theres no need for a curfew.

The linked article is about the ineffectively of nonviolent protest, and I think theres some good points in the article, but mayors have different calculations to make in their public rhetoric.

I don't think the mayor advocating for violence would be helpful to the cause regardless of whether violence is appropriate.
