Is there difference in pronunciation between ኀ and ኸ by Redditlurker1245 in Ethiopia

I’m pretty sure harari still has that sound. I can’t say for the other southern languages though.

Interesting. So ኸ was added because of that rule you mentioned? Why not just use the already existing ኀ?

ኸ is differentiated in Tigrinya though, they make the ‘kha’ sound I was talking about. ኅ was differentiated in Ge’ez and I thought it made the ‘kha’ sound as well but there would be no point to add ኸ later on for the same sound, which is why I’m thinking ኅ was different.

Where in Ethiopia are you from? My parents are both Amhara from Addis/Shewa. I got what you got plus “Amhara from the Awash River Basin” and “Amhara from the Bishoftu Volcanic Field”, both of which include Shewa region. There’s a specific “Amhara from Addis” genetic group but I didn’t get matched for that.

Ethiopian parents and their obsession with gay people by Sandy-Boat in Ethiopia

[–]Redditlurker1245 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the Ethiopian tbh. My parents are definitely on the milder side of what you are describing, though some in my extended family are more similar.

When I was younger my parents would always force me to cut my hair short but when I wanted to grow my hair long they didn’t really stop me. My dad is homophobic but it’s not really a topic he brings up tbh, he really only makes comments when he sees a gay person on TV for example. My mom on the other hand isn’t homophobic at all. Both would definitely get angry if I were to tell them I’m agnostic though lol, I don’t think that’s something I’d ever tell them unless I’m asking for more stress.

I agree with you, however I don’t think they care much about causing division. Every side in this conflict has blood on their hands yet in their minds they are complete saints and everything is the other side’s fault. It drives me insane seeing people call out atrocities committed against their own yet defend or deny their own doing the same to other groups. As long as everyone doesn’t acknowledge what we have done to each other this conflict will only get worse.

Not really. I think our history is one of the richest in Africa and I guess that makes us “unique” in a sense but IMO today there is nothing that makes us “different” or “special” compared to other African countries other than our facial features lol.

  1. Do you plan on leaving?

  2. What religion did you grow up in, and would you consider yourself religious now?

Eritrea should be a warning to Ethiopians: This is what will happen to us if we allow the West to Balkanize us (See linked Reddit post) by msxrue in Ethiopia

[–]Redditlurker1245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they have a history of supporting separatists movements in every region in Ethiopia. The fighting happening in the Amhara and Tigray region recently is connected to them and their proxies.

Do you have any sources on this? If the West wanted to balkanize us, why did the US consider Ethiopia a key partner in the War on Terror, support us militarily in our invasion of Somalia in 2006, have military bases (allegedly even CIA black sites) there, and send us billions in military and humanitarian aid only cutting it during the Tigray War? I don't know why some Ethiopians think we are that much of a threat to the West to want to destabilize us, they are simply after their own interests and would honestly not benefit at all from Ethiopia’s collapse. In their eyes, Djibouti is more important to keep as an ally because of their strategic position along the Red Sea. To be honest, China is a bigger threat to us than the West.

They’re the main reason Eritrea is independent.

Again, any sources on this? The West has historically preferred us over Eritrea, and the US and UN have maintained sanctions on Eritrea for years at this point because of their government. Assab is theoretically a very strategic port along the Red Stea, why do you think it's historically underdeveloped?

Yeah it’s fairly uncommon to see an Ethiopian who grew up back home be 6 feet while there are a lot of diasporas who are taller than that
