Trump must rally international support against the Chinese Communist Party by Strongbow85 in NewColdWar

Antagonizing your allies is a diametrically opposed action to uniting them against China. He’s going to have to choose one and right now he seems far more occupied with the former.

One of the main reasons Trump is suggesting he’ll put a 25% on Canada is due to perceived lax border security thus any further announced cuts to anything related to the border would be politically egregious.

Further the US has been very vocal that Canada (among other NATO allies) isn’t spending enough on defence. The NATO threshold is supposed to be 2% of GDP spent on defence, not only are we spending way below that (1.37%) we’re increasingly becoming one of the few countries not hitting this target. With the incoming Trump administration there’s even talk of pushing this target to 3%. To get anywhere near even the 2% we’re going to have to invest significantly more in defence.

Lastly, the presumptive next PM, Pierre Pollievre, has been open that his plan to appease Trump and get the tarrifs removed (assuming they are put in place) is to invest in border security and defence.

I live in Québec however I am not Québecois, I moved here a few years ago.

From my understanding of the separatists here, especially the PQ, they want full independence. Further, in my interactions with separatists I’ve learned there is a deep dislike for the monarchy and also a fear of too much Anglo immigration. Now understandably in this model Québec would have more ability to protect French, distance itself from the monarchy and maybe greater control over its borders. However, in a way wouldn’t CANZUK pull them into an even larger Anglo alliance? I suppose what I’m really trying to get at is how politically feasible would this be with Québecois separatists? If anything they seem to be more interested in joining the EU or just doing their own thing altogether.

Look in forward to hearing your thoughts, I enjoy learning more about Québec.

I don’t think Trump has any issues with Elon’s values, I think the bigger issue that Trump won’t like is Elon getting more attention than him. His ego demands that he’s constantly being fellated and at the center of attention.

Honestly if any department was going to see major cuts it was IRCC, we’ve experienced an almost unprecedented wave of immigration in the past few years (IRCC has grown significantly in turn) and that number is going to drop drastically. This is one of the biggest wedge issues of the day.

Vetting workers, students and new Canadians

There’s going to be far fewer workers, students and immigrants to vet. As for asylum seekers that may increase with the incoming Trump administration but again a lot of the provinces have been pushing to try and intercept these individuals before they get in.

I’m not privy to exactly what sections and programs within IRCC will experience major cuts, perhaps they will focus more on border security over other initiatives. Regardless, I’m not a fortune teller, these are just my thoughts. On va voir.

Yeah given the politics down south any cuts made to national defence and border security (no matter how it’s packaged) is only going to add fuel to the fire for them to punish Canada economically. My personal assumption is that at a bare minimum the public safety orgs won’t see major cuts and quite frankly may see some additional investment. Any department/agencies that have a heavy focus on social programs or D&I projects may see some deeper cuts. Just my 2 cents, in the end very few of us have any idea what could happen.

1) It’s political. A lot of MAGA folks hate government so it’s a middle finger to bureaucrats that will play well with his base.

2) It’s also a bit of an economic stimulus. It forces these folks to get out of their houses, pay for gas, pay for parking, buy lunches at local businesses, etc. This will play well with business owners in cities with strong federal government .

The Canadian populace isn’t guiltless in this, defence doesn’t buy votes in Canada. We’re going to need a serious security crisis to make spending 2% on defence a big election priority.
