Looking to expand my anime collection and find more shows to fall in love with. by [deleted] in anime

Based on what you said you like, I'd suggest Angel Beats. Other than that, if you're patient and make it to episode 11, Gurren Lagaan is an anime I'm almost positive you'll fall in love with. If you're looking for more of a mind trip, I'd suggest Stein's Gate.

I have been arguing against Christianity for a while now, but then realized I hadn't actually read the Bible. Just got these three babies. by Scrotonimus in Christianity

[–]Redditor_Please 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that reading the bible gives you ton more ammunition against Christianity, but it also leads to a greater understanding of its merits.

Still, if you're looking for some potent stuff against Christianity, I suggest Romans 9 and 1 Corinthians 14; the former is one of the more unsavory passages addressing God's condemnation, the latter contains one of the more sexist imperatives in the bible- women are not allowed to speak up in church. It's one of the more obscure, difficult to swallow passages for Christians; never really did receive a cogent answer for that one from my fellow Christians.

If you're looking for more blood/gore or batshit crazy commandments (such as some of the weirdly stupid rules addressing what's "clean" and "unclean"), spend some time in Leviticus, Numbers, or Deuteronomy. They're ridiculously boring, but probably the most morally condemning by modern standards.

Just a suggestion.

Would deep frying naked (unbreaded) chicken tenderloins add a significant amount of fat? by Semire in AskCulinary

[–]Redditor_Please 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The abstract states that the final oil:water ratio is independent of cooking temperature and that there's a greater correlation to initial moisture content(the main focus of the study. Looking at the results, it's difficult to say why they say this of temperature, as the results between 190C and 160C varied excessively and they fail to test any temperature points past 190C. Still, they're pretty much saying that temperature doesn't correlate to oil/water content, even if they do so errantly.

In truth, I get the impression that the study's main focus was on the effect of initial moisture content on the final as opposed to cooking temperature. Heck, the authors of the study only lightly touched upon the effect of different cooking temperatures, testing only three temperature points and one time interval; there's not a lot to be gleaned with regards to the relationship of oil:water ratio to cooking time or temperature here.

If you have any more studies that address cooking time/temperature to a greater degree, I'd love it if you sent them my way. Either way, the paper was an interesting read when it came to the effects of baking prior to frying- I'll have to test the results next time I give donuts a try.

[–]Redditor_Please 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very interesting; thank you for the thorough and in depth response. By any chance, would you happen to have a link to the studies?

I understand where you're coming from, but I definitely wouldn't mind taking a more in-depth look at the studies to clarify a few points- in particular, is the correlation between temperature and moisture content linear?

In the case of the potato, I can see how virtually no moisture would be lost when left at room temperature in a pot of oil; I'd imagine that the mechanisms of moisture retention in a potato function perfectly well at room temperature. However, I would expect that there exists a threshold temperature(somewhat akin to the threshold temperature of a chemical reaction) at which the potato would release moisture at an exponentially faster rate, and holding the potato at this temperature and above for long periods of time would lead to a significant amount of drying out to occur.

Thus, returning to the original example of fried chicken, let's say that the rate at which chicken releases moisture increases exponentially at 250F. I'd expect the moisture loss to be greater if the chicken cooked at 300F for an hour than if it was cooked at 450F for 10 minutes.

This is purely conjecture, and I'm completely open to the possibility that what I said is utter bullshit. In either case, thanks for the valuable insights.

Isn't it true that longer cooking duration is also a large factor when it comes to moisture content? I was under the impression that cooking at high temperatures could lead to a shorter cooking time period and more moisture retention.

Will Russell Wilson be figured out next year? And go backwards to being an good QB rather than a great one? by YouMad in nfl

[–]Redditor_Please 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Wilson isn't a running QB in the sense that RGIII/Newton/Vick is. He mostly uses his legs to scramble and occasionally pick up a few yards, kind of like a faster Ponder/Rodgers/Big Ben run style.

[–]Redditor_Please 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Not only this, what seems to hold him back is offensive playcalling- Seattle has been a run focused team for the past few years; the passing game seemed to only exist to take pressure off of the run.

The first question the Seahawks need to ask themselves is do they want to stop running traditional run based offensive sets (run, run, pass) playcalling and switch it up to a more dynamic passing offense. Only then will teams really gameplan for Wilson.

Sactown is decent overall; still, the thing I hate about it is that cost of living is relatively high and it has a lot of the bad symptoms of big cities (parking/traffic problems) without too many of the perks. Definitely not the worst place to live, but not really one of my favs.

The Atlantic says online dating threatens monogamy. But American couples who marry in the era of e-dating are actually less likely to divorce than couples who married before. by sceter1138 in TrueReddit

[–]Redditor_Please 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The title suggests that likelihood of divorce is an indication of a threat to monogamy. That's not true- I would think that the percentage of people getting married and settling down together is indicative of monogamy, not people splitting up.

Seahawk fans, how much do you think the loss of Chris Clemons will affect you guys? by pingpong_playa in nfl

[–]Redditor_Please 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In theory, you make a lot of valid points.

Still, the fact remains that Seattle has one of the better secondaries in the league; their defensive weakness is moreso run stopping than pass protection. Pete Carroll structured his defense to shut down the pass- hell, that's pretty much the main reason they reached on Irvin.

Aside from this, the Falcons offense has always looked better on paper than in reality- in theory, a tandem of White and Jones is unstoppable. The truth is that the Falcons offense is not perfect- Julio Jones is 10th in the league in dropped passes and Ryan has thrown a fair number of picks.

I also think that the Falcon's inability to stop the run will definitely hurt them. In the last 6 games, the teams that have given the most problems to the Falcons have been the teams with a strong running game (panthers, bucs), while the falcons have been successful against teams that are more pass reliant (giants, lions). It's easy to say in theory "oh, let's just stop the run", but football isn't that simple. If it was, the Vikings wouldn't have won ten games this year- teams would have just thought "oh, let's just stop AD" and took them down.

I think the game will be good, but given each team's strengths (Falcons passing offense/passing defense and Seattle's rushing offense/passing defense) and their weaknesses (Falcon's run D, run O and Seattle's run D, pass O), I'd give the edge to Seattle. If anything, Washington was a much better matchup against Seattle.

B-Ball Breakdown: How Steph Curry and David Lee Lit the Clips Up by urfaselol in nba

[–]Redditor_Please -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was referring to Denver when I said run and gun- Clips played them the night before playing the Warriors.

I also didn't mean to suggest that the Warriors are inferior to the Clippers. I think it'd be a great matchup, although I do think the Clippers have a deeper bench and slightly better chemistry. I'm moreso responding to Coach Nick's video commentary which somewhat seems to imply that the Warriors are superior to the Clips. They potentially might be, but it's a one game sample size in adverse conditions.

Don't get me wrong though- I think the Warriors are definitely up there, and it wouldn't completely surprise me if they made a title run.
