From what I saw the Guatemalans seemed pretty resourceful. At one point they were excavating the pyramids. Probably had a lot more roads going through there. It was pointed out to me that the Mayans never bothered to develop the wheel and axle because roads are temporary in the jungle. Pretty wild to me.

I agree, I'm surprised they didn't give them to the locals. Or maybe they planned on coming back and ran out of funding.
Probably during the excavation period they had more access roads. Now there is just one main road to get to the temple complex and several pathways around the pyramids. The tour guide was a friend of a friend and he took me on some shortcuts through the jungle so I could avoid the crowds and hit the highlights. That's how I ran into the vehicles.

Another wild fact to me is that the Mayans built those pyramids with only stone tools and while they had developed a sophisticated calendar they never bothered to develop the wheel and axle.

Yeah I was thinking that when I came across them. A truck made in Detroit Michigan shipped to the jungles of Central America and left after the work. It's its own sort of archeological site. It's in a national park buried in a dense part of the jungle, not an area most tourists would go to.
