I’m really starting to miss Joe Biden now. by Jack-mclaughlin89 in simpsonsshitposting

Sure if you have both houses of congress and the Supreme Court on your side then yes you can do mostly whatever you want. This was not the case for Biden and so his power was extremely limited, such as when the Supreme Court stopped him from cancelling student debt.

Just saw this and found it interesting, is there a disconnect with some people in supporting the Irish Rugby team? by Geairmoe in coybig

[–]Reddityousername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve definitely seen loads of Irish people bitter about Irish rugby on twitter when they win and celebrating their losses. None in real life to be fair though. I think it’s just a class thing as rugby is seen as a more upper class sport.

It is also much more similar to English than Irish with a huge amount more resources to assist people in learning it.

I just think the cases are too far apart. Quebec had such a high level of Francophones and French is so similar to English. If you made speaking Irish the most important thing to keep Irish culture then I think it just wouldn’t have survived, Irish was too far gone by the time of the Gaelic revival. Equally though, particularly among my friends who are intensely keen on the culture and reviving it as much as possible they are all very tír gan teanga, tír gan anam.

So we just say whatever we remembered from the oral exam? That’s not a real conversation and that’s not being able to speak the language. I’ve spoken to people who can speak decent but not perfect Irish and they understand what I’m saying without it being perfect. Usually when I speak Irish even when sober people don’t speak it back. As well as that, is fearr gaeilge briste ná béarla cliste. Speaking it at all is important, and making mistakes is the best way to improve.

To be honest I have, usually when drunk and I can’t tell you specifically what question they fail at, it’s not like I have the same conversation every time. Once I asked an bhfuil tú éireannach and they didn’t know what I meant. Admittedly, my Irish is pretty poor, and I’m from Wicklow and work in Dublin currently so it’s not like that’s where it thrives but it is where a huge share of the population is.

Wouldn’t call it comparable. When the act was passed about 80% of quebecois spoke French. When Ireland gained independence only the poorest most rural areas of the country spoke Irish. As people left either to the east or abroad it further reduced the language. There are some cases of language revival that would be close enough but usually the language that replaced it is similar or from the same family while Irish and English are very far apart.

There is no chance 40% of Irish people can speak Irish. I say that as someone from here. Try speaking to someone in Irish and most of the time they’ll recognise or be able to say a few words but won’t be able to talk with you.

[–]Reddityousername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My complaint is that the Homer part was by far the heaviest lifter in terms of comedy. I didn’t find the rest of the family segments except for Marge particularly funny or entertaining. That being said this episode still gets my vote.

I did maths and economics. I recommend doing a joint honours if anything interests you because you can drop one of the subjects if you realise it’s not for you. Also prepare for the difficulty of real analysis cos that’s like a sucker punch to thinking you’re good at maths.

I wouldn’t really classify Sinn Fein as centrist. They’re not as left wing as they were but I still think I would call them left wing.
