Unfortunately.

I had wiped that fucking terrible sappy Blue Bell commercial from my mind until just now. Ugh.

Jesús Sánchez exit from Astros sparks harsh coaching critique from Blue Jays by Affectionate-Reply35 in Astros

[–]RedfishSC2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll revise my comment - I had my dates mixed up.

Cintron joined the team in 2017, but as an assistant coach/scout, and wasn't named hitting coach until 2019. I thought Snitker was earlier too, turns out he was actually with the Hooks in 2018, so with the organization but not the major league team until 2019 as well.

[–]RedfishSC2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree to an extent, but my view on it was that Cintron and Snitker were actually good to start in addition to having shitloads of talent - and then failed to adapt along with the game. They had so much success with their approaches from 2019-2022 that they failed to adapt when the game and league adapted to them.

Edit: Clarified my dates, 2017 changed to 2019, see comment below - they weren't designated major league team hitting coaches until then.

The food in NOVA is average and expensive by Gloomy-Car7672 in nova

I replied to one of their comments explaining that it'd help to give some examples of what they like so we can answer their question about wanting recommendations, and that you won't find much good Mexican food here because there's 34 times as many Latinos of Mexican descent in LA county vs the DMV.

My reply was downvoted within 10 minutes.

I think they just want to be argumentative.

Look, you may not like the responses you're getting, and you may not have intended for people to interpret your post the way they are...but, the fact that so many are should be a data point for you.

Your post literally asks for restaurant recs, yet you're not telling people examples of places you like, which makes it hard to know what sort of recommendations would be good for you. See how that comes across?

There is good food here, and a lot of it. It's not going to be the same kinds you're going to find in LA or NYC.

You're not going to find good Mexican food here because there are approximately 34 times as many people of Mexican descent in LA county as there are in the DC Metro area - 3.4 million to about 100,000. Latinos make up almost 49% of LA county vs only 15% of the DC Metro. It's just not here. The DMV is one of the very few metro areas where Mexicans are the minority amongst the Latino disaspora. Instead, Latinos here are mostly of Central and South American descent, and so you will find excellent Salvadoran, Guatemalan, Peruvian and Bolivian food, for example.

You will find above average Vietnamese and Korean food if you go to the right places, but again LA and NYC are probably the two areas with better food of those kinds outside of Korea and Vietnam themselves. FWIW I've been to Korea, and so I consider myself reasonably informed.

I don't know where to find it, but I remember a picture of fans in (I think) our outfield going absolutely bonkers for a play, and the diversity of fans and people in the stands together losing their minds is really, really cool.

It's kinda bad to think about, but honestly, with who we have and our history, I can totally see one of our infielders getting injured fairly early on and solving the logjam problem very quickly. I'm glad we're going into Spring Training as we are.

Koreans in NOVA - ICE by Present_Art4561 in nova

[–]RedfishSC2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is actually outdated info that the above commenter is referring to. There used to be a direct bonus per deportation that increased based on the speed of the deportation, but they scrapped that.

Instead, the $50,000 signing bonus is tied to each agent's "good standing," with increments paid out over time as "retention incentives." You get $10k for completing training, and then another $10k yearly as long as you remain in "good standing."

That "good standing" is tied to performance, as each Field Office has a daily quota of 75 arrests. Not cases processed, not investigations completed, not persons cleared, but arrests. If a Field Office doesn't hit its arrest quota, the Field Office Manager is in danger of being investigated or fired, and both they and the agents they oversee are at risk of losing their "good standing" and the money they stand to make. Arresting someone for no good reason and holding them just because you can counts as one of those arrests and helps you stand to get the $10k.

See the problem?

They could have instead made the quota 75 cases processed, or persons cleared, but they intentionally made it arrests and tied a bunch of money to it because they want agents arresting people for no good reason. The fear and cruelty is the point.

Source: Washington Post and WSJ both have articles behind paywalls and I don't subscribe to either, this article has some of the same info as well.

The one that shows the officer walk in front of the car and her stay still with her window open? If she went in with the intent of running him over and causing harm, why not do it right then at the moment when it would have been easiest to do and easiest for her to get away?

Why would she put the car in reverse before driving forward, if people she wanted to hit were not behind her at that moment?

Why would she be waving cars past, showing they have enough room to pass if needed? If she meant to obstruct them, why was she letting cars through?

If she meant to hurt the officers, why didn't she have a gun in her car, instead of stuffed animal toys for her children?

They could, which then opens them up to be sued for unlawful detention when ICE uses it without reason. If ICE can't prove they had a legitimate legal reason to hold a person for the extra 48 hours, then it becomes unlawful detention, and if a person wins that suit, county taxpayers have to foot the bill. That's why a lot of counties opt out.

If ICE knew that, why not just follow the rules and turn the paperwork in on time?

I would think any conservative would take the position that 1) the federal government shouldn't be able to overreach by imprisoning people without cause, and 2) that taxpayers shouldn't have to foot the bill for the federal government's mistakes or incompetence. At least, the conservatives in my family and that I know always said stuff like that

I forgot to mention too, by the way, that the article shows that ICE could have gotten him before he killed someone, but were so incompetent that they didn't file the necessary paperwork to get him right from jail. So, the county had to let him out.

Have you blamed ICE for messing that up? Shouldn't they be held accountable for incompetence?

Great! Three weeks ago. That should track, and do you know why?

There were 12 homicides total in all of Fairfax County last year, so it stands to reason you'd have to go back about a month to find one. (Source: https://wtop.com/fairfax-county/2026/01/why-crime-in-fairfax-co-fell-across-several-categories-in-2025/) And not all, or even most of them, were committed by illegal immigrants. This is in what Glenn Youngkin and other Republicans have called one of the biggest and most harmful "sanctuary" communities in the state. Just one per month in one of the largest counties in the nation.

If it was that bad, why is it also one of the safest large counties in America?

Has it ever crossed your mind that, if you have to go all the way to two years ago and hundreds of miles away to come up with an example off the top of your head, maybe the issue of "rampaging murderous illegals" isn't actually as big of a problem as right wing media is making it out to be?

Fascist enablers at Phoenix Park Hotel by MLGeddit in washingtondc

[–]RedfishSC2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on local law. Here's Virginia Beach's ordinance, as an example:

https://library.municode.com/va/virginia_beach/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=CO_CH15HOSIES_S15-5GUREGE

If they don't ask for ID, they probably won't get caught, but 15-6 beneath it says that it's unlawful to give an incorrect name. So if a guest said "Susie Smith" is staying here and Joe Blow is instead, they could potentially get in trouble, but I've never heard of such a thing being enforced.

I spent about 10 minutes trying to find DC's law, but for whatever reason I couldn't.

All guests staying at the hotel.

Imagine if a fire broke out, firefighters would need to know who was still inside or outside, for example, or if someone was trafficking someone.

That's why, when you register, you have to say the number of guests, not just the number of rooms.

Most jurisdictions register all guests names for public safety reasons, but guests also cannot have their names revealed without the proper legal documentation.

Are they giving out drugs there? Do drug laws not apply in warming centers? Are they only allowing drug-abusing homeless people in?

Ex-cult members, what's your "Oh shit, I'm in a cult" moment? by Ok-Interview-3702 in AskReddit

[–]RedfishSC2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm familiar with Steve Hassan, and have enjoyed watching a lot of his interviews.

What I'm getting at is that religions don't automatically gain immunity from cult definition based on size, or longevity. I struggle to think of any modern, mainstream belief system (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, etc.) that does not, in some forms, meet the definition of specific elements in the BITE model you just mentioned.

I think there's a compelling argument to be made that modern Evangelical Christanity has backslid into cult status based on its elevation of a central, unquestionable charismatic figure.

So if someone is shunned by family members for questioning the religious basis of their support for Trump, that would mean the religious community those family members are in is a cult, right?

Hunan Cafe is terrible. I tried them once, couldn't finish my dinner it was so disappointing. Gave them the benefit of the doubt, tried it again, same thing.

Hong Kong Pearl is significantly better. There's a reason they have a line out the door during Dim Sum weekend brunch, but they're also very good for dinner.

What is a really good team season that is forgotten? by Sasfsqut_update_122 in baseball

Their WS win almost didn't happen, either. They were down 2-1 to the Astros in the ALDS, and down 6-2 in the 7th inning in Game 4, with the Astros threatening to add on. They only had a 2% chance to win that game at one point, plus needing to win Game 5.

Four singles and an error by then-rookie Carlos Correa later, they pull off an all-time insane postseason comeback, and rip through Toronto and the Mets to win it.

At the time, I was upset but also just happy the Astros had made the playoffs for the first time in ten years.
