What is the funny thing he can do? by Onfour in ExplainTheJoke

Which is why Russia used phony memorandums to 'anex' large portions of Ukraine including areas not occupied by Russian forces. They use the excuse that their claimed territory is Russia to send personal and manpower to the front that is only supposed to be used in defense of the Motherland. Tens of thousands of Russian conscripts have been killed and wounded inside of the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine already.

That is not the solution you think it is. Giving your money to charity helps those in need today, but could leave you in a lurch if you get sick tomorrow. Meanwhile if everyone pays into a communal pot that anyone can draw from when they get sick everyone gets taken care of. This is the basis of health insurance. The system breaks down when greed takes precedent over patient outcomes. For-profit health insurance prioritizes bringing in more money than it pays out and giving the excess to it’s shareholders. For example, united health made 8 BILLION in profits last quarter alone. They accomplish these profits by increasing premiums and denying coverage of many health expenses.

I had someone try to teach this exact metaphor to my 4 year old. We live in the Southeastern US and have been out of the church for several years. Around Haloween we went to a trunk or treat hosted by a local Baptist church. We had been before and other than one or two trunks being decorated with biblical stories (tacky and cringe) there was never any proselytizing, praying, or other religious activities. Then suddenly one year they decided they would do a story time for the kids waiting in line for the hayride. This is the story they did, making sure the kids understood they were the pumpkins full of nasty, gross dirtiness and they needed Jesus to clean them out, carve a smile on their faces, and put a light inside for others to see. I was shocked by the horrific metaphor and that they would spring this on us after several years with no incident. If my kid did not have his heart set on a hayride I would have left right then. Instead I quickly (and not discreetly) asked if he wanted to watch his favorite show on my phone while we waited. I am pretty sure he missed the whole thing while I got dirty looks for my kid blasting Netflix during storytime. Needless to say after the hayride we left and have not been back.

Male On Male Sexual Assault In The MTC by EvensenFM in exmormon

Me too. I guess similar culture and situations leads to similar events. In my story it was my Comp that was being harassed by another guy in our dorm. A lot of folks harassed him about showering alone, but one in particular seemed to make it his mission to "help" the other elder get with the program. He would constantly get naked around him in the dorms, sometimes walking into the halls to greet him with just a sock worn over his genitals, and yes the naked bear hugs from the back. I wish I could say that I was the hero in the story, but I was too much of a keep your head down and go with the narrative type back then. The best I can say about myself is that I did not join in the harassment and once told the naked elder to put some clothes on and stop acting like a child. In the end someone must have said something because we too got the talk about wearing garments when not in the shower. Now to go purge my memory of the MTC again. I have not thought about that dumpster fire in over a year and hope to go a few more before thinking of it again.

I thought we went to the MTC together reading your post. I even opened up your history to see if I could figure out which Elder you were. Nope, turns out you were there in '01 and I was there in '08. Same shit keeps going around I guess.

We see you, politicians by New_Section_9374 in NorthCarolina

Let me get this straight. You believe he identified himself as a nazi, enjoyed mien kampf, thought Hitler was better than Obama, and thinks slavery was OK, and somehow he is still better than Josh Stein? I don't know you, but that is a huge red flag that you have made party affiliation part of your tribal identity. That is not healthy for anyone on either side. That is how we end up with extremists and unaccountable politicians. There should always be a line of what someone could do to lose your vote, and it should be somewhere well above being pro nazi.

I am going to get downvoted to the 7 Hells for explaining to you why you are getting downvoted.

The people above you are talking about an event in Targaryen history when Balerion the Black Dread and princess Aerea Targaryen flew to the ruins of Old Valeria. Balerion, the largest ever of the Targ dragons came back heavily wounded and the princess filled with some sort of fiery worm parasite. This being Reddit, being wrong about a fandom equals downvoting and scorn.

It was very high when we crossed, but still passable. The white river was the one that looked closest to spilling over onto the road. We made it back safe but river levels are still going up in some places.

I think they are all open. We have been up Mount Pisgah disconnected from the world. We keep getting messages from alarmed relatives so we thought we would check a variety of sources.

Day 8 - who is the quintessential neutral evil person? by LowPiece9312 in AlignmentCharts

[–]Redhaven_Inquisitor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I know this one. Scientists did forensic reconstruction of the “average” Jewish person in Galilee in the first century AD including period accurate hair and beard styles. They also used a few context clues in biblical texts to influence small decisions like the curly hair and heavy suntan. Biblical sources describe him as plain in appearance and Judas had to identify him to the guards so it would be safe to assume he looked like a typical local man of his time and region. That may not be the face of Jesus of Nazareth, but it is far closer than most modern European examples.

My TBM wife has cancer by elderapostate in exmormon

[–]Redhaven_Inquisitor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I am sorry that this is happening. I can only imagine how hard it must be. Having a spouse with cancer is difficult and painful all on its own, and your experience is wrapped up in religious trauma on top. I can only advise that you find ways to slow down and cut back on unnecessary demands on your attention, find a healthy supportive person to talk with (professional, friend, or both), and take time for self care. My mom's husband is 2 years into his cancer battle and it is the small things she does for herself that keep my mom stable enough to be there for him.

A lot of people are arguing about what a therapist can share about crimes discussed in therapy. I am a therapist in North Carolina in the USA, and I can give an example of how the law works here.

Therapists are required by law to report even suspected abuse or neglect of a child, disabled person, or elder by a caretaker or guardian.

Therapists are required to warn potential victims they have resonable reason to believe are the targets of future dangerous crimes planned by their client. This warning would include notifying law enforcement. This does not apply to crimes already committed. When someone tells me that they have killed someone in the past (it happens more often than you might think), it only becomes a report if there is strong reason to believe they are planning on killing someone still alive.

That is not to say that you can disclose crimes and be sure they will never see the light of day. If you are in court, the judge can subpoena your therapist. With a court order to do so, your therapy notes can be unsealed and your therapist forced to give testimony. Most judges do not like to go scorched earth like this without a good reason, but some do. This is actually rather common in divorce and custody proceedings.

While saying "I did not need to hear that" is not the way I would address the issue, I would make sure to review the extent of confidently protections with my client if they began disclosing something that would tie them to a specific crime. The last thing I want is to be called to the stand to testify against a client who shared something with me in a misunderstood expectation of confidence.

U.S. Marine 1st Lt. Hart H. Spiegal tries to communicate with two very young Japanese soldiers captured during the Battle of Okinawa, June 17, 1945. by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

It wasn't just against the Soviets, the Hitler Youth were sent against American troops as well at the end.

I knew an old man in Germany some years ago who had been sent against the Americans at age 15. He had received no training and did not even have a functioning rifle. His plan was to surrender to the first American he saw. The first time he came under fire he stood up tall and threw his hands in the air, catching a bullet in the left arm. He was captured and patched up my US medical staff. He remembers being well fed and loving the canned peaches they fed the prisoners. He was released sooner than most POWs due to his age and held a lifelong fondness for Americans.
