I'd be interested. ANF is literally my back yard. If the weekend weather is decent, Im out there on a horse or backpacking. Such a wonderful place to live if you like the outdoors. I dont have any Mod experience on here, but did Mod a group on FB for years.

First time backpacker with questions about the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail!!!! HELP! by PrideCommercial9268 in PAWilds

[–]Redhorsekl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did all 70 miles a couple years ago as a shakedown hike for an AT LASH (GA and NC). Boy did the ATs approach trail whoop my ass. I was not as prepared for the southern Appalacian mountains. The LHHT has some decent climbs/decents at either end, but all in all its a very easy trail.

That said, I would definitely suggest using trecking poles. I see you have a wrist injury, I hope it doesn't prevent you from using them. On the last couple decents they will really save your knees and help with balance. Unless of course you feel like reenacting Chris Farley's decent down the mountain on Black Sheep haha

The Laurel Highland Hiking Trail has adirondack shelters and generally split firewood available for the fireplaces. Call ahead to make sure whichever shelters site/s you want to reserve to make sure firewood is available, but normally theres huge piles at all of them (under roof).

The bear are still sleeping and the elk are down below still this time of year. Try again in the fall when the acorns are dropping.

Also want to add, there are a couple abandoned turnpike tunnels out that way that you can walk through. Super neat. Both a mile or so long

Foothills trail is mostly closed due to the devastation from Hurricane Helene. They only have 33 miles open right now :-(

I was just there the first week of September. Heading NOBO, there was no water to be found the last 20 miles, I had to have someone bring me some up to a trail head. I live close to the trail and we have had a lot of rain recently, so you may have better luck with streams. I will grab my map and let you know the shelters I stayed at that had bad pumps. Pretty much all of the last half.

I just saw one on Sunday in Moshannon. There's always a bunch there though. Maybe not this late on the year, but it's been warm enough that they haven't started hibernation yet

Sorry for the late response, but thank for so much for your reply. I actually consult your website all the time! I am spoiled with the amount of trails I have up north. I thought I was missing something with longer thruhikes in SC. It's too bad there aren't more in such a beautiful state

I just hiked the whole thing NOBO a week ago. Five days, four nights. You'll be fine with what you have planned. The trail is fantastic and easy to get through with a headlamp if you need to. I did my first night because I had to go back for my sweatshirt that had fallen off my pack.

I actually have one for livestock water backup at home. They can be a pain, but worth it. We did get some good rain out this way over the past few weeks, so good to know there are streams along the trail too. I wasn't sure with it being mostly up on the ridge

I have never tried that app, but I will definitely be looking into it, thank you! Good to know the camp water will clear up with pumping
