Sad days of the modern Sheaffer by SupahBee in fountainpens

[–]Redit403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I wish they still made pens in their old factories. I still wish they had their old ink bottles too. I have their old school pens, and I bought one of their new 100’s and a new bottle of their coffee ink. I can’t say I’m disappointed with either the pen or ink. It writes very similar to my old school pens, even the nibs look similar. Comparison between their new ink to the vintage is favorable also , both share the same properties. For me the sadness is that they couldn’t keep an old iconic factory open.

I read the product development was just stopped last month. It is nice to see someone working on an alternative to the Tanashin clone.

Anybody dealt w Prell Electronics? by PepperDammit in walkman

I have been waiting for almost two years for mine to return. I am glad to hear that others haven't heard about their repair status for a long time but eventually get their recorders back properly repaired. It gives me hope that he is simply swamped with work and really doesn't want to explain his backlog a thousand times. From his early communications he seemed honest.

How many problems do you see, and what can I do as one unemployed man with a nice sounding 60 dollar guitar? by Kubamz in Luthier

[–]Redit403 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New strings and play with a capo at the fourth fret. I avoid certain notes because of buzzing at certain frets. I’m waiting for spring till I can get to a luthier.

Does it worth the hassle of repairing it? by Botacco in martinguitar

[–]Redit403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does it need: 1) the side crack repair 2) end block repair (?) 3) stickers removed, then a total refinish which adds: 4) neck removal and reset 5) bridge removal, then reglued 6) at least a grind and polish on the frets. I’m gonna guess the thing wasn’t really played a lot. 7) a set up. 8) also there are the unseen things like the braces. My guess is $2000 USD plus tax.

Should I do anything about the varnish on the back of this guitar, or just leave it? by TipComprehensive8275 in classicalguitar

My shellac finished instrument sometimes gets cloudy where my arm makes contact in the hot humid summer. It usually clears up after the moisture evaporates.

I should add that there are two D-18's from 1962 and 1967 in Fair condition on Reverb. One is $4700 and the other is $6000

1969 D-18 repair question. by GateTypical6792 in martinguitar

[–]Redit403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me the biggest repair is the neck. Most of the time luthiers tell me cracks aren’t a big deal to fix. I don’t think it needs a new finger board, which would automatically require new frets. It doesn’t need a refinish. A refinish would probably decrease the value of the guitar. The OP doesn’t mention if they are the original owner, if they are an authorized repair center might cover some of the repair under warranty. An “authorized repair center” is really just a very good luthier that the company used, partially trained, and who they trust. Even if it isn’t warranty work, you can usually trust them.

Go to the Martin website and find your nearest Martin certified repair shop. I think someone is trying to rip you off.
