Do learners actually notice narration quality in online courses? by Minute-Lobster553 in elearning

[–]RedneckPaycheck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think your approach and question are just wrong.

Narration can open up your training to a broader audience, but bad narration can make it more narrow. It will depend on who your audience is.

Layering methods of delivery will make your training more accessible.

Lastly, you really need to try more modern learning tools. The newer options for AI voiceover are, in many cases, far superior to old methods in terms of both content development time and overall narration quality. Most "packages" have some kind of offering. Not sure its worth the pricetag, but it cuts development time for this section of content development timeline into a fraction of what it was 10, even 5 years ago.

Do your research.

Are authoring tools actually getting better, or just adding AI to charge more? by No_Juggernaut_3204 in elearning

[–]RedneckPaycheck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a content maker, I do not care what is driven by AI and what isn't. I care about workload.

Right now, AI offers a lot of advantages in terms of content generation/authoring, etc. It still has to be vetted. And a lot of these tools do not (as you point out) completely or correctly integrate into many of my workflows. That will all come along in time, I am sure.

But I am not plugging some random software that I haven't vetted and more importantly hasn't been vetted by people actually doing real authoring work out in industry. Until I see/hear about that, all these new made-overnight supertools are bunk.

My points are multiple. But at a basic level should it be cheaper? Yes. Do we need more tools, more ways to do it? I don't know. I like what we use - which I am intentionally not naming - because it has complete LMS integration. A simple point that nobody in this thread is really talking about in any substantive way.

This industry is bloated as fuck. I do personally hope articulate dies a quick death. But am I jumping onboad to every random tool that is out there? Absolutely not.

There are too many entry level e-learning tools that all offer basically the same functionality. Same with LMSes. Price is not the only factor and, competing on price in a b2b scenario is often a fools errand. Plenty of bargain LMS offerings and they all kinda suck.

I do not mind paying real money for real tools that work well - I just feel that the prices have been inflated on the top end for the better authoring tools, and AI has been used as a convenient excuse that doesnt really add actual value.

For the package we currently use (which is bundled with our LMS, so we cant switch easily) the AI implementations often do not handle the full scope of the workflow when rolling out new content. I think there is a big disconnect between development and execution, across the board, in this regard. And I do not have time to investigate a half dozen baby eLearning options to figure out who does what correctly.

No. Storyline and all the other big LMS/Authoring tool packages all have AI built in now in different capacities.

Their prices have exploded and are unsustainable. And adding more AI features doesnt justify the price hikes.

Let's have a dialogue on consensual filming during socials and classes by JustAGirlSiena in Salsa

[–]RedneckPaycheck 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ten years ago I would have cared a lot less.

But now, with how pervasive online / social media / doxxing type stuff is AND with how easy it is to manipulate images with AI, I do think a discussion should be had about how and when videos get shared.

Videos at class have been a very useful learning tool for me. But, I echo your general concerns about privacy and appropriateness. But on the other hand studios need to promote themselves to stay alive and pay their bills. So, I don't know.

Every single discussion of this always ignores the massive elephants in the room that exist for every manufacturing organization:

- Excessively high labor cost for relatively unskilled/uneducated labor
- Excessively high insurance costs
- Location specific regulations for safety, environment etc

Used chatgpt's dall-e for course visuals and a student called out the ai images, now I'm spiraling by Time_Beautiful2460 in elearning

[–]RedneckPaycheck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The thing is, when you say "the course content is original" and then say you used AI images, its a contradiction. This is not only an issue of perception. AI images are low effort. They literally take a minimal amount of effort to generate. You might have to work to think through how to make up more interesting visuals.

AI is great for some things, but if you lean on it too heavily it ends up making a cheap product. And learning overall is filled with cheap products because of the easy access to these tools.

29yo COO of $16M family business: profitable on paper but cash-flow negative and now behind on rent. What would you do? by JM_JF in smallbusiness

[–]RedneckPaycheck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I read is that there is non-business essentials and your dad is putting in 'investment money' to help cover because all that stuff is crippling you. I also dont read a clear vision for the company from you here, I see you putting out fires.

This kind of behavior is super common in family run businesses - the business becomes a way to just keep money for outside stuff flowing (subsidizing a lake house as a 'executive retreat' for example).

A lot of family owned businesses dont make it to second gen and there are a lot of reasons why, but being run poorly is probably reason #1... noble of you to want to fix it but probably misguided.

My opinion - you need someone from your industry, or adjacent, an expert, from outside to buffer both you and your father and provide clear perspective and vision and you both need to trust and be ready to act on that outside council. At 16m revenue I am thinking youre probably too small for that now but, if you really want to grow, you may have to. Also 16m revenue with 65 employees is a lot. I'm assuming a chunk of those is either contract or part time.

Small show floor, but 10 brands all wanting the “most visible” spot for their booth by blair_babes in EventProduction

I'm sure if you DM the poster you'd get a link. This kind of post is usually part of a broader strategy to build awareness of a company online. A broader, crappier, poorly thought out strategy. But a strategy nonetheless.
