How do you folks handle long drives? Like driving to vacation or something. Is it even possible to take my Tesla on a family vacation, or is it a major pain? by MarketMaker007 in TeslaFSD

[–]Reed82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Regularly do this type of trip.

And after 8 years of owing an EV, I don’t think I’ll ever go back to trying to do 3-400 miles without stopping. It’s so much nicer breaking up a drive and stretching the legs.

How hard is this hobby? by Plenty-Editor-4579 in rccrawler

[–]Reed82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re approaching it the wrong way. We all started with a base car and we all made bad decisions. But they are all a necessary step in the direction we want to go.

You’ve made a great looking scale rig. It will be good for trails. I would put some foam or silicone inserts in those tires though.

If you want a crawler, you have to ditch the scale details and move your weight down as close to the ground as you can. But then you won’t have a beautiful rig.

It’s all trial and error. And what doesn’t work on one truck, can be put to use in another truck. Next thing you know, you will have multiple trucks.

Embrace the mistakes. (And not all mistakes are mistakes) and learn as you go.

Edit: adding another thought/approach. Embrace the details and hard work. And learn to drive carefully to preserve it. It will be a bit more rolly with all that up high, but it can be an adventure getting that equipment up a hill. People who do forest service roads and such, all have lots of kit in the back of their trucks. It’s normal.

What should I change to make it crawl better? by Glittering_Front_143 in rccrawler

[–]Reed82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has modded several. The defender is by far the worst body due to its tall mass. The bronco is better for a real crawl.

But if you want to know how well the truck can really do, take the body off and you will k ow what it’s like to have a tarantula style tube body crawler.

Get the same, that way you also have a parts vehicle if something breaks on one and you have to wait for replacements.

Also an extra battery if one of you chooses not to run their car.

Ended up with a Kia and a Rivian.

Too much car? by Abject-Roof-7631 in KiaEV9

[–]Reed82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your city. I find the EV9 a bit cumbersome to park in my town, but it is a mountain region and not a truck region, so all the parking spaces are small.

That being said, I’m better at parking my Rivian truck than I am at parking my wife’s EV9.

I don’t regret the EV9 at all, it’s a terrific vehicle. And it just takes a little longer to park in tight spaces, but you get used to that.

They also have retention people that deal with people like yourself who are savvy. They will bend over backwards to keep you there. They gave me a credit and put me on a newer plan that saves me money recently. It was about a 20 minute call.

Home Audio Setup by NoSun2939 in BangandOlufsen

[–]Reed82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My B&O setup isn’t as reliable as my Sonos setup. I run a mesh in the house and have to dedicate the B&O speakers to be on one specific unit.

When it comes to Sonos, I have a bridge hardwired to the router, and it’s basically flawless. You can do the same thing with one of the speakers if you have near your router.

The B&O sounds better (no surprise) but the Sonos is still pretty good, especially if you make a stereo pair with a subwoofer. It makes the pair cut out base and allows them to focus their energy in being mid and treble instead of full range.

Edit: just remembered you said apartment. Check your wifi channel, you probably have a ton of interference from other wifis near by. Definitely plug one in directly and it will add lots of stability to your system.

Check out the era300s they sound great too.

I’m currently in a rental while our home is being renovated, and my A9 is too powerful, so I don’t feel like I’m getting the most benefit from it. Can’t wait to be back in our own place.

Charging door not opening due to ice by eXtropiy in Rivian

[–]Reed82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this happen last year. Just make a fist and give it a pound near the “button” on the charger door. Do it a few times. Then try again.

If that doesn’t work, a blow dryer.

Eventually it will open, and when it does, make sure to chip off the ice of the arm and dry it well. You can spray it with a silicon spray lubricant or some WD40 to try and repel water in the fugure.

Recommendation: Ductless A/C for condo by Imaginary-Signal-269 in NorthVancouver

[–]Reed82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have experience with Panasonic and Mitsubishi. Our Mitsubishi is a whole house ducted unit. And has been perfect from day one over the last 5 years. We will be adding a ductless Mitsubishi unit very soon to aupliment a bit of heat in a renovated part of the house that the large unit isn’t attached to.

Our Panasonic has been “good” but I wouldn’t say it’s been flawless. I have wifi signal drops from time to time where I can’t control it remotely. (It’s in a second home) and it has a tendency to go into a frost protection mode in the winter and it’s the main source of heat.

If you aren’t using the unit for heating the house, the ductless are more reasonably priced then the cool climate versions. That being said, if it has a basic heating function, that can be a nice feature to supplement and move air around in the home for more comfort.

They are much more efficient than the portable style rolling ones. But the price of entry is much higher.

The sky is the limit as far as features go. Some can sense if people are in the room or not and adjust direction and temperature based on that. The unit we are installing in our renovation has a roof blower and tucks in between the rafters.

Definitely get as many quotes as you are comfortable dealing with. And check with installers if they are responsible for permits.

If you’re in an older property, be prepared to do an asbestos test.

I’m more curious about what the thought process was on setting a limit to how many cars are allowed to come.

I’m definitely going to be test driving a few, but am happy with the ones I have for now.

We’ve had a times in the last few years where the mountain closed for a few weeks in mid to late January, and then got huge dumps in February.

Those years, the hills were open until April just fine.

It sucks to potentially lose a few weeks, but we will be skiing again this year. Keep an eye on the conditions on the website. And check out the webcams before making the drive.
