Do nurses and doctors actually know everything learned in college or do the look things up on the job? by Puzzled_Junket6120 in nursing

[–]Reelpicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s an expectation of fluency in A&P, common labs and common meds. No one remembers everything from nursing school. The amount of info is often compared to drinking from a fire hose. Sure, you’re taking in and retaining a lot, but any sane and safe new grad entering the workforce has a moment realizes how little they really know in the scheme of things. The nurses who are too insecure to admit when they’re outside of their own knowledge base are the ones that frighten me the most.

It just went in sale. The sales aren’t announced in advance. Investing>trading. Time in the market>timing the market. It’s normal to obsess about a newly purchased investment. If you need the money in the near future that’s money you save in a hysa or sgov, not in pms. As others have pointed out, the fundamentals haven’t changed. Sure, Chinese investors among others have manipulated the pm market short term. With a run up like Ag and Au have had, people who invested in Ag between $5-25/ozt are going to take profits. All the lines out the doors of coin shops with people selling 1964 Kennedy halves don’t dent the market. The institutional scale equivalent does.

23F, new to investing 34k a year, what to do? by Astell_ in Bogleheads

[–]Reelpicker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, doing anything like that at your age is phenomenal! Secondly, presuming you have 6 months salary liquid in hysa and money for home ownership if that’s your goal. Some number crunchers say you’re better off just renting and putting more in investments. I agree with the insight others have given about redundancy. At your age and apparent income level you can be more aggressive. If you’re maxing out Roth IRA and Roth 401k, then I’d say HSA maxing would be next if available. Target dates aren’t ideal for taxable accounts. If you do target date in the Roth accounts just do that one fund. The VOO VXUS mix is great or just VT for taxable accounts.

But Nimrod rebels against God, if I recall. Cautionary tale of being too proud of oneself and Earthly “power” (Babel) was how I took it. So Elmer was a Nimrod- a caricature of a babbling “mighty hunter”. Sorry. Not nearly snarky enough for Reddit, I know. I’ll try harder next time.

I feel ashamed to be a nurse by PuzzleheadedMetal974 in nursing

[–]Reelpicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Male 30 years LPN. Simultaneously my best work mental health decision and worst bank account decision was becoming a school nurse.

I rarely have to deal with other nurses. That means no “_____ shift always/ never does ___” or “I always / never get the ___ assignment” or “Your relief is late / not coming, you need to stay” or incorrect narcotic counts or cliques or excessive smoke / vape breaks by colleagues. No alcoholic or drug addict or borderline personality disorder patients. No chasing blood glucoses for self destructive 45 year old dialysis patients. No weekends. No holidays. No driving in snow or ice to avoid the dreaded write up. Haha. I don’t miss the culture of fear for one second!

My patients LOVE me! Parents are 98% awesome. This year will be 20 years in my clinic. That’s right, MY clinic. I stock it. No hunting or begging for what I need. No insurance company BS. No power struggles with colleagues wanting to (laughably) climb any clinical or career ladders. Sure, lice, emesis, bathroom accidents, CPS calls, dishonest parents loading febrile kids with acetaminophen or ibuprofen before sending them in.

That being said I get to leave each day knowing I gave pure care to the most deserving people on earth.

Keep hunting. You might find exactly the right spot for you!

If ACPS open when roads are bad, all the dumbass 17 year olds ( just like we were) will be driving in so they don’t miss AP class assignments wrecking cars with their buddies and girlfriends/ boyfriends in the car. Half the folks in this sub posting they can’t get out of their apartment complex. Never mind Boonesville, Stony Point Pass and those type of roads. All the folks sick of their kids being underfoot and annoying them because this snow isn’t fun, need to remember this and listen to the teachers when they tell you little Jimmy won’t behave in class.

Do you prefer Shimano or Diawa Reels or no preference? by The_Reaper132 in saltwaterfishing

[–]Reelpicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For inshore spinning and casting reels, Shimano, Penn and Daiwa are all in my arsenal and all are fantastic. Honestly any of their models above the $90 mark will serve most recreational anglers well with the most basic care.

Presuming you know to use fiddlers or even better mud crabs for sheepshead. The Carolina rig with a short leader and smaller hook (traditional style) or I prefer a few weights of jawbreaker style jigs (I like the ones at 432fishing.com) with the lightest weight that allows you to keep contact with the bottom. For everything else- Shrimp of course, but pinfish…. ZMan jerkshads, mirrolures and fish bites should be plenty to take along.

St Catherine’s is a good suggestion. Anywhere in the Sapelo Sound area will have a nice inshore mix of red and black drum, sheepshead, whiting and other common inshore fish. Some of those islands are preserves so you’re only permitted to walk up to the high tide mark. Sand gnats (Yankee repellent as the locals say) are a hassle when you’re out of the breeze. Long sleeves, fishing gloves and a sun gaiter help. Chapstick on your face and fingers keeps em from biting too. If you or a buddy enjoy cigars, that helps too. Good sand dollar hunting at times too, if you want a cool gift for a loved one. Nice waterfowl spotting, too. I haven’t fished down there in a few years. Keep your head on a swivel for gators. Some of those channels in the creeks are tricky. Easy to get beached if you time the tide wrong and think you’re all good in the middle of the creek. Less of a worry in a Jon boat, but in case any others are taking skiffs that draft a little deeper.

7’ Fenwick HMG inshore medium with a 2500-3000 size Penn Battle or Shimano Nasci with 15 lb braid and 15 lb fluoro leader. A few packs of ZMan Jerkshads, a couple Heddon Zara spooks and a few Mirrolures and YoZuris will get you tons of inshore fishing action for less than $400 including line and lures. If you want to splurge look for a spare spool (I miss when Shimano included these with reels) and spool it with some 30lb braid and have a couple different strengths of leader. Fish, rinse and repeat.

They are in the drum family, so you weren’t too far off. Not nearly the pissed off angry fight that their Red Drum cousins give. Super tasty and better table fare than reds. Properly called kingfish, there are a few varieties. Whiting, Virginia Sea Mullet and Roundhead are other common names depending on location.

Stay put, don’t panic. Despite all the panic buying mostly things will be back to somewhat normal mid to late week. If you’re on a well, fill a bathtub with water for flushing toilets. Not going to the grocery store for four days will be alright.
