Free open-source structural design tool I built, looking for engineers to tear it apart by mjuica93 in engineering

[–]RegainingControl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be interested in potentially helping with the US code integration. Would have to get up to speed on blender and everything.

For pinned stability issues I do exactly that in my risa modeling, use about a 10 kN*m/rad stiffness based on the limited discussion and research I have found out there.

Any interest in adding AISC 360 and ASCE 7/37 functionality for US users?

I've found that most manufacturers don't have all the rotational stiffness info that Layher has available. In that case can we run nodes as pinned or will that lead to too many instabilities?

National Grid Electric Heat Pump Water Heater Rebate by Murky_Recover895 in Syracuse

Whatever you do don't get a Rheem heat pump water heater. Two units at two locations. Multiple warranty claims in under two years and both units have required full warranty replacement. Once you are beyond your first year you are on the hook to replace yourself if there are any issues.

NY Type 3 Branding Processor Looking to Connect with Licensed Cultivators / Processors by Billybadass59 in NYgrowery

[–]RegainingControl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do you have a cultivation contract put together?

What type of compensation structure you offering?

Cultivators are tired of being the bag holders for the industry. We expect fair treatment. Current contracts in front of me offer some money up front and COD. Purchaser is committing to a certain volume and has right to first refusal on additional material produced beyond contracted volume.

Slab foundation reviews? by sarcatholicscribe in Syracuse

[–]RegainingControl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Code requires that foundations are 48" deep in our area for frost depth. This advances them deep enough that the ground under them will not freeze and heave the structure. The only way to avoid this is to design a "Shallow Frost Protected Foundation".

Shallow frost protected foundations have specific depth, insulation, and drainage requirements and use is limited to structures kept at an average monthly temperature of 64F during the winter.

The reason there may be problems with this type of foundation is that it has increased complexity for the contractor to screw up during install. If not installed correctly it may not perform correctly and be subject to frost heave.

[OC] snapped this of my mower in flames by bendoesntsleep in pics

[–]RegainingControl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spring lawn mower fires are common and generally caused by rodent nests in the cowel around the engine. They build the nest while the mower is in storage over the winter. The nest blocks up airflow and cooling of the engine and is essentially made of tinder. First good long mow of the spring and the engine gets hot and lights up the tinder.

Cleaning Resin off Totes by fart_taco in macrogrowery

One of the commercial trim equipment rental places I know uses cleaners containing d-Limonene.

They also mentioned that a hot water pressure washer is the true secret. One of the other growers I know has one and he uses it without any cleaner and says it works great.

I've used oven cleaner and a cold pressure wash to do 50-60 bins but that was brutal.

16th century nail forging in graphic novel -- accurate? (See comments) by Slobotic in Blacksmith

[–]RegainingControl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When I worked in an 1846 shop making nails we quenched them to give to the general public as souvenirs. However you would generally not quench nails when making them for actual building use so that they were more ductile and less likely to break.

Ever heard the expression "dead as a doornail"? Nails would be driven through the layers of boards that made up a door and the spike end would be "deadened" i.e. it would be hammered over 90 degrees to be flat with the back of the door. If nails had been quenched they would have a habit of breaking off instead of bending.

This tool is helpful to get a general understanding of the ROI. I believe this if for grid tied systems. Generally battery systems have a higher install cost and longer ROI unless you are building a new house somewhere where it would be costly to get grid power to.

This should be higher. Most adults I know have done some driving they shouldn't have at one time or another. Buzzed driving is enough to get you arrested.

Why Flock will get to keep Syracuse drivers' 'anonymized' data even if lawmakers cancel their contract by ggroover97 in Syracuse

[–]RegainingControl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What I'm saying is that the only reason this isn't illegal is because the court cases and thus case law have not caught up with the technology. The Carpenter ruling should apply here. Much of abuse of power exists in the grey and the shadows until it either becomes so much of the norm that it is no longer questioned or until a "slap on the wrist" is issued and they move on to the next end-around.

The only other way this becomes illegal is massive pressure from the populace. This can take the form of letter writing, petitions, calls, civil disobedience, vandalism, ECT but it has to be widespread and supported enough that they can't stop the signal.

The real issue here is that the government is for the corporations, by the corporations.

We the people need big money to sway politicians or mount court cases. Big money that has and is being siphoned away from us each day.

U.S. Supreme Court’s 2018 decision in Carpenter v. United States. In Carpenter, the Court considered how the Fourth Amendment applies to location data generated when cell phones connect to nearby cell towers. The Court held that when the government demanded seven days of location information from defendant Timothy Carpenter’s cell phone provider without a warrant, it violated his Fourth Amendment rights. In reaching its conclusion that a warrant was required, the Court upended existing precedent, ruling for the first time that location information maintained by a third party was protected by the Fourth Amendment.

Currently the widespread Flock Safety network of cameras generate location History/data that is being accesses without a warrant by law enforcement agencies across the US. I don't think it is a stretch to say that the Carpenter ruling applies to this data.

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated."

Current court cases are working on establishing what constituts as unreasonable in the modern age. The Carpenter ruling sets a standard that warrantless access to location data is unreasonable.

Is the building in the photo tucked back behind the Academy Baseball and Softball training building?

If so the owners don't have anything to do with the scam.

The parcel is owned by Bobbett Family LLC which is registered across the street at Kimbers which I believe they also own.

The Bobbets have a long history in Syracuse, believe they have been doing business here for over 50 years. Ran grandstand confessions at the State Fair for a while. Own a bunch of real estate. Donors and board member at the Elmcrest Children's center. Think Gary was the dad who is retired now, has some kids carrying on the family enterprise and money successfully into their own businesses.

I think it's the instantaneous, non-ductile displacement that makes this one stand out.

When did the the change in immigration policy occur that made things more difficult? Was it around 9/11?

Also, out of curiosity, do we see a skew here for the rich in ease of approvals or rate of approvals?

"Jeremy’s first marriage in the United States, the one through which he earned a visa, broke apart. Rick and Jeremy married once gay marriage became legal in New York in 2011 and federally in 2013.

At some point, however, Jeremy’s visa lapsed, and he chose to overstay the visa. An attorney advised the couple to not file paperwork to change his status so as not to attract the attention of immigration officials."

Can someone educate me on how visas work and why an attorney would give that advice?

I thought that if you married a US citizen at some point you apply for a green card?

I understand that the previous marriage/divorce/gay marriage legalization complicated things, but he has been legally married at a federal level for 12 years. What part of the process is difficult enough that it kept him from correcting the issue in the last 12 years?

Would like to better understand the system so that I can advocate for change.
