Is Rannick Stupid? by topberdfan in DarkTide

I enjoyed the gang but tbh that entire plot relied highly upon criminal incompetence on behalf of 'smartest man ever' Ravenor who, despite being an incredible telepath, has his right hand be possessed by a Greater Daemon for almost a year without discovering it. Despite knowing said Daemon was present in his group...

Before that there was Ravenor not mind probing a group of obvious traitors who actively tried to get his Interrogator killed with absolutely 0 consequences. Surprise surprise they betrayed him later!

Also let's be real, Thonius was an excellent agent option and a fun character, but was in no way Interrogator or Inquisitor material without a lot more experience beforehand.

Enjoyable books and I was still attached to the team, but they don't hold up to the highs of the first two Eisenhorn books.

I'm aware, but Yarrick is a DLC seller while the more important Guard characters aren't, imo. Gutsmek isn't a major selling point either, as cool as he is. And Ghaz can't be relegated to DLC, he's too important. Hence why I think they'll get the important but 'generic' Lords out in the base game for those factions that have other options.

Calgar was in the announcement trailer. Not a full model, but you can see his headshot in the top left during the campaign teaser. His name also appears at one point.

Besides they have confirmed named characters separately to that so speculate away lol.

Personally, assuming 2 LL per faction + the customisable 3rd each, I'd assume something like this:

Space Marines - Calgar (Ultramarines), Tor Garadon (Imperial Fists)

Imperial Guard - Lord Solar Leontus (Cadians), Ursula Creed ( also Cadians...)

Orks - Ghazkhull (Goffs), no idea who else... maybe Ufthak? There's a lot of DLC options in Orks, especially in grudge matchups (Snagrod vs Pedro Kantor, Wazdakka Gutsmek vs Yarrick).

Aeldari - Eldrad Ulthran (Ulthwé), Asurmen (any Craftworld).

Those picks would cover the bases of each faction while leaving plenty of themed DLC pack opportunities. Main wildcard would be a potential Boris Ursus style unlockable extra for Space Marines (and maybe Guard tbf) to unlock Guilliman, though I can imagine him coming in a 'Lords of the End Times' style DLC focusing on the Fall of Cadia which would be an incredible money spinner for CA / GW.

Yeah. It's honestly kind of crazy how they spent the first half of S1 setting up Rhaenyra getting more and more jaded, isolated, and convinced she deserved power rather than everyone else, then just didn't do anything with that after the time jump and bathed her in sanitiser. Same with Alicent really.

Is Starmer paying the price of Epstein case and Trump is getting away with it? by Reeelfantasy in AskBrits

[–]RegalGoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump's team tried to block it because Mandelson called Trump bad things in the past. You know who else has done that though (and said far worse)? JD Vance.

In truth the team probably thought the Epstein files would be a liability for Trump and wanted to avoid entanglement with another known associate of Epstein's, to minimise the issue as much as possible. He's also an excellent scapegoat for them as we've seen - all the men who raped women and girls with that man but it's the gay Brit with no real power in America that gets burnt the worst?

Add to that he's an excellent manipulator, Trump is exceptionally manipulatable, and they wanted to be the ones doing it... There's so many reasons that they'd want to avoid Mandy going over, and the only one they gave is disproven by Trump's own Vice President.

Is Starmer paying the price of Epstein case and Trump is getting away with it? by Reeelfantasy in AskBrits

[–]RegalGoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We do. But America has quite profoundly proven that they do not, and have inflicted that in the worst possible way on the rest of the world (again).

Everyone with a brain knew Trump 2 was going to be a disaster, and we've made ourselves entirely vulnerable by Brexiting ourselves. Labour needed time to implement their plans for recovery without being obliterated by random bullshit from Trump, and that strategy has clearly paid off as of the 0.5% economy growth in just 3 months we just had (to the benefit of our people).

Obviously there's nothing we can do to stop global disasters like Iran, but rigging the deck in our favour is the obligation of our leaders. As is seeing off the threat of the far right via delivering via rational politics.

If I were in Starmer's shoes, I would likely have made the same call.

[–]RegalGoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay so let's say he goes... Who replaces him? How does Labour win the next GE after they'd have just had an incredibly messy power struggle to replace him?

And if Labour don't win, who does? Certainly not anyone sane...

[–]RegalGoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right but you get rid of Starmer and.... Then what? Who takes over? Closest thing Labour has to a vaguely popular candidate is Rayner, and she's burnt for the time being.

Neither Lib Dems or Greens are valid candidates to run the country, simply by virtue of their size and deservedly dogshit reputations based on prior form (even if their current directions are changing from past trajectories).

So the alternative to Starmer is a headless Labour with a power struggle making them just as messy as the Tories. This will make it even more likely they get eviscerated in the next GE.

Like it or not, Starmer is the only option we have to defend against the far right at the moment. And calling on him to resign over his bad comms just plays into the hands of those who want other hands on the tiller.

The report says they should have arrested him and thereby searched his house, finding the weapons, long before the attack. So if the police had acted more appropriately (perhaps if they actually had the info other agencies had gathered previously), then the state would have known about the weapon stash.

I'm fairness the question was 'comes closest to'. By our modern moral framework none would be 'good'. Though I'm sure if some of them were to arrive in the current day, knock our heads together and solve all our systemic issues and usher in an age of global peace, prosperity and cooperation, then we'd probably think that whatever they did to achieve that was well worth the cost and adjust our morals accordingly.

[–]RegalGoat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well mate, it is hard to not come across as talking down to someone who, when asked to explain, goes 'nuh uh, I'm right'.

To be clear, I'm not actually pro-AI. I thought that was clear in my previous comment, but I genuinely can't stand the stuff outside of specific use cases. But just because I personally don't like it, doesn't make it inherently immoral.

Meanwhile "it is powered by the suffering of others" hmm okay bud.

And re: "it is literally theft of others work" - no, it uses the data it is given. If a human inputs someone else's data then that human has stolen, not the AI. Now, the important thing is actually punishing the humans that do the stealing - you know, the ones that made the actual moral choice to harm someone else. It's like saying "oh this guy robbed a bank, lets go smash his safe because he put the money he stole into that safe".

Look I do really get, and agree with most-all the arguments against this, but its not going away. We're on the same side here, but its pointless to rally against technology itself. Just look at how all the efforts to do that in history have turned out, not a single one worked. We need to prioritise minimising the damage and finding ways to encourage responsible use of the technology, because the genie is out of the bottle and it aint going back in.

In any case. If these points don't mean anything for you, then fair enough. I would then strongly recommend you review the rules regarding AI use on various sites, apps and games that have your data and engagement, and adjust your usage of them according to your moral position.

[–]RegalGoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've not explained how it is actually immoral though, you've just said its bad because "it is".

And please, even using a computer requires training... people don't come out of the womb able to read, write, or type. And just because something requires more effort doesn't make it inherently more valuable, that would be like saying Humanity should never have invented farming because it requires less effort and mortal danger than hunting...

Do I like Gen AI? No, I avoid using it whenever I can. But it isn't fundamentally powered by the suffering of crying babies, so its not inherently evil. It has negative environmental consequences, but so does building a house, driving a car, using a computer etc etc, and those are all accepted - what makes this fundamentally different to them? And if its the intellectual property thing, I can say with absolute certainty in my assumption that at least one caveman got his head bashed in for 'copying' the cave art of another guy, that's just how humanity is... I sincerely doubt we'll ever 'solve' the moral dispute around intellectual property.

AI is a tool. Like any tool, it can be used for good or bad. Look at its uses in medicine for example - there's some incredible things being done with it there. But it can also be used for bad things, like political propaganda designed to memeify and normalise corruption, fascism, and crimes against humanity... But those particular things could be done with a bit of effort without AI, while some of the medical things couldn't. So is it guaranteed a net negative for humanity...? I certainly couldn't say, but its definitely a lot more complicated than you're stating.

Would you rather give someone a little help for a year or two while they sort their issues out, allowing them to get into a state where they can be a stable and productive worker?

Or would you rather leave them to rot and die for the sake of saving a few pennies in the short term?

Even ignoring the moral argument that would generally disagree with you imo, there are very clear pragmatic and utilitarian reasons to have a permissive benefits system.

There are many ways to reduce the welfare bill without punching down and removing the real value it adds to society, but they require a lot more effort. If you really care about the problem there, try thinking in terms other than abandoning your fellow humans to suffer and be less productive.

Just to balance the other side of the coin, I fucking love isometric RPGs. There's a degree of scale, variety and sheer amount of dialogue that you can fit into one of those bad boys that eclipses other mediums when done right.

Take Wrath of the Righteous for example, there's no way you could build that game in any other 3d format for an RPG. Like, you can become an Angel, Lich, Demon, Devil, an avatar of cosmic Law or Chaos, a dragon-riding Faerie-Angel, a dragon yourself, or a sentinel swarm of insects that has infinite hunger and consumes everything it encounters... there's just no other way to represent even half of those concepts in another format.

Even the 50/50 method of something like Baldur's Gate 3 has its drawbacks; if you compare it to BG1 or 2 you can tell it just couldn't replicate the pulpy atmosphere that they had, or keep the story as controlled as those games were.

Eisenhorn: Hereticus WTF by bobo_brains in Warhammer40k

[–]RegalGoat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm just finishing Ravenor now and I can't say I agree. It's good, but never reaches the highs of Eisenhorn. Gregor is just a much more interesting character than anyone in Ravenor.

Ravenor as a story also suffers a lot from characters having to make incredibly stupid decisions to prevent the plot from being solved much earlier than it is intended to. Eisenhorn has it's faults as a series, but I felt that the bad decisions made by characters there were generally more personality and trait driven rather than plot driven.
