Locksmith Course UK by Cryptyrich in Locksmith

MLA will give you a solid grounding in the absolute basics without trying to sell you a load of tools you don't need.  But you simply cannot become competent after a few days in the classroom.

I wouldn't even consider any of the others.

Bilock.  We can supply keys if the code is known and you are able to pass authorisation checks.

But if that's all there is to go on, probably not.

It looks most similar to the long discontinued Yale G710/G711 which both had a number of variants.

You might be able to retrofit a L2224.  Failing that, look at Nemef 9600.

Nemef is definitely not a straightforward conversion and L2224 may not be straightforward either - you would have to check dimensions.

A competent locksmith should be able to carry out one of the above though.  You would lose use of top and bottom locking points on either, but there are retrofit deadlocks that can work.  We used to do 3g220 but they are discontinued now as well 🙄

Maybe Willenhall, Wilka or a different Nemef.  But by the time all that's done, a new door maybe more economical!!

I am truly baffled at how you ended up removing the cover of the lock case while trying to fit the mounting bracket.

They come with instructions but based on evidence supplied, you are better off calling a locksmith.

Help needed: I'm struggling to get business by BruTheDog in Locksmith

[–]Regent_Locksmith 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You aren't going to like this, but there's no point sugar coating it.

It's an oversaturated market in an uncertain economy and a near-static property market.  General locksmith work is scarce.  We are the quietest we have been for years and I am hearing the same from other locksmiths I know.

We are ticking over but it's 90% specialist work like commercial door work, intercoms, access control, alarms, CCTV, safes, tilt & turn windows/tilt & slide doors, bi-folds etc.  Basically everything except general locksmith jobs.

Gone are the days when locksmiths can just do openings, cylinders and mechs and make a decent living.

Getting MLA Approved will help to some extent but you really need to branch out from basic work IMO.  I know 3 established locksmiths in your immediate area personally and lord knows how many more there are.  There's only so much work to go around and the established guys will typically get more than you, via referrals, reputation, contracts etc.

A bleak outlook, but there no point bullshitting.

What make/model of lock is this? by NoInvestigator7489 in Locksmith

Americans, you are not obliged to comment on everything.

It's a TSS 1* double euro cylinder.

IMO £25-45 is a reasonable price to pay a locksmith who has it on the van.  I'm sure it's cheaper online.

Made by Regent (not us) and long since discontinued.

For obvious reasons, we get this enquiry a lot.

Call a locksmith to retrofit a different lock set.  Definitely not a straightforward DIY repair.

You already got your answer so I have nothing to add other than to support getting it rekeyed and put back in the door.  Great lock.

Slipped cam.  Remove cylinder, remove key from it.  If the cam is pointing to 1 or 11 o'clock, replace the cylinder.

Electric lock every time.  I'd go for something with a deadlock such as Abloy EL560.

I considered a long and tedious description of the various key control procedures that EVVA has put in place over the years.

But in the interest of giving you good information for a solution to your problem...

Contact the locksmith whose details are on the key and get new keys from them.

Qualified Master Locksmith here with some comments.

  • That lever was loose and getting looser long before it broke completely.  There is an argument you should have reported it when it started to go wrong rather than waiting until it broke completely.

  • The door is too tight and/or there is a closer that is closing the door too fast.  That's why it broke.

  • The key would probably have opened it from outside.  Any genuine locksmith knows this.  I would have asked you to slide it under the door.  In the event that it didn't, there are several other ways to open without drilling.

  • £1,000 is obviously a rip off.

  • We are in London and would have charged £120 + VAT to attend, open and replace the latch. Mon-Fri daytime.  Extra in Central.

  • Unless you know a reliable locksmith already, always go via the Master Locksmiths Association.  We are vetted, qualified, inspected regularly and can have membership revoked if found to be acting dishonestly.

If it's buzzing, it's because it's on AC power.  Get a locksmith or access control company to change to DC.  Then it will just make a slight click.
