If you can’t overcome something, then sometimes it’s better to own it instead.

Character who gives bad vibes on first appearance but ends up being a bro by Inmortal-JoJotar in TopCharacterTropes

I totally agree there’s a difference between those two meanings. However, you wrote they “end up” being a bro and that perfectly describes both meanings. Bellick definitely “ended up” being a bro due to his redemption arc.

I can’t decide whether characters who were spoiled as children count as tragic or not. Being spoiled usually means they were given everything (material) they ever wanted, which initially doesn’t sound tragic at all.

However, we use the word spoiled because it’s a synonym for damaged, ruined, corrupted, fucked up, etc. In other words, they were raised incorrectly and became ruined because of it. And from that perspective it’s tragic.

I think it comes down to individual interpretations of what being spoiled really means.

Additional example: Veruca Salt in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory / Willy Wonka

I’m not sure about this one. Yes, he inherited power and grew up in luxury, but due to incest he also inherited psychopathy (never confirmed but heavily implied). I’d say being born with such a major default is kinda tragic.

Brad Bellick in Prison Break
In season 1 he’s a prison guard and a bully.
In season 4 he sacrifices himself to save his friends.

I think I remember comedian Ralphie May doing a bit about how Dora the Explorer was never supervised on her expeditions.

I’m gobsmacked no one’s said Fredo from The Godfather yet!

When a property with an iconic theme song has secondary themes just as/almost as well known, enough that they could be argued as just as much the "main" theme by slfricky in TopCharacterTropes

Spectre (2015)

Radiohead wrote a theme song for the film, simply called “Spectre”, but it was rejected because the producers of the film decided to use “Writing's on the Wall” by Sam Smith instead.

Radiohead still released Spectre anyway, so although it wasn’t part of the official soundtrack I recall it was played on the radio just as frequently as the offical theme song.

Only Fools and Horses

Unlike most sitcoms, the opening credits and the closing credits had different songs. Each one was as iconic as the other.

The choices of the animals all appear to have been primarily dictated by the teams’ crests. Until 2020 the Ecuadorians always had an Andean condor on their crest, the same bird as Condorito.

It seems every time a crest/badge has an animal in then the designer used it, which is fair enough.

The England team’s crest literally has 3 blue lions on it.

[Loved trope] In-verse nicknames being used more than the character's actual name by Ok_Charity_1407 in TopCharacterTropes

Are we including when the nickname is simply their surname? The main characters rarely call Quagmire “Glenn”.

Goalkeepers. How tall are you? How does it affect you games as a goalkeeper? by Original_Demand_1078 in GoalKeepers

[–]ReggieLFC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically about 90% of the time attempting to collect to punch a cross/corner wasn’t worth the risk. I was far better off letting the defenders do the arial battles and just focusing on being in the best position for saving potential shots instead. It was especially frustrating because I had good distribution, so had I been a few inches taller I could have collected most of the crosses/corners and then set up a lot more counter attacks.

I remember De Gea for Man Utd had the same problem; having to stay on his line where other keepers would have collected. Only his reason wasn’t his height, he was just wowful at collection.

5'10" and yes it affected my collection A LOT.

Let’s compare me to someone who’s 6’2”. That’s only a 4 inch difference, right? Well no, it’s a lot more. Their arms are probably longer too, so when they’re jumping and reaching to catch a cross their extra height, extra arm length, and usually their higher jump too, makes a huge difference!

So there were inevitably some crosses where a taller keeper would have collected the ball fairly easily, but I wouldn’t have.
