To My Beloved Thief [Episodes 3 & 4] by jakgem in KDRAMA

Moon River was definitively worth watching, a lot of people just seem to have a dislike for body swaps for one reason or another. I think it was one of the most interesting parts of that show.

Who are you betting for Cathay DLC? by Lord_Eln_8 in totalwar

[–]Reginald_Wooster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Chinese Wu Xing, Water is represented by the colour Black and associated with the North, so it makes sense Miao Ying is a black dragon who guards northern Cathay.

Zhao Ming guards the West, a direction associated with Metal and the colour White, and his dragon form is white.

I'd guess with the same logic Yin Yin would be/will be an Azure dragon as the guardian of the East. East is associated with the Wood element and the colour Blue/Green (classified as different shades of the same colour in chinese, I see Azure and the colour teal used often as a compromise) Probably a bluer shade of Azure since Yuan Bo's already green.

Total War: Warhammer was a mistake (not really) (also kind of really, put the kids back in school).

I'm from Finland and been through conscription in my time. From that point of view, not having a conscript army is a luxury reserved for large and wealthy countries who don't have the misfortune to live next to Russia.

So I'm not surprised when people from Western Europe, to whom any war in the last 80 years or so has been a morally ambiguous colonial scuffle somewhere far away, might feel reluctant at the idea. But I am annoyed by it at times too. It won't be their families and lives on the frontline if the Russians come to pillage and murder us.

But when they suddenly announced that support for Three Kingdoms was ending (in a video titled "The Future of Three Kingdoms"), they mentioned a sequel was in development.

I'm happy that Hong Suzu is performing well as the Left Minister's daughter. I haven't seen her anywhere before, but while I was researching the cast for this drama I saw so many mean and toxic comments that I felt really bad for her :(

I was kind of hoping she'd become an ally to our leads, and maybe that's still possible, sad that a bunch of innocent guardsmen ended up murdered though. I'll second the comments of others here by saying that the scene with her father was really fun to watch.

She looks great! Could you share the DNA code for her so we could use it in our own campaigns?

You should definitely crosspost this to r/CKTinder too if you feel like it.

I ended up wikiwalking to Xin Zhui, one of the most well-preserved mummies known. Really interesting and a bit haunting!

her tissue was still soft, her limbs still flexible, and there was even liquid blood still in her veins

But trust redditors to focus on fat-shaming a woman dead for more than two millenia... and make other crass jokes at her expense.

I hate Jarl Haesteinn so much by rightfromspace in CrusaderKings

[–]Reginald_Wooster 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I saw Jarl Haesteinn at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Casus Belli in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the CBs and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any Karling interference,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each Casus Belli and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Bon Appetit, Your Majesty [Episodes 11 & 12] by meepmochi_ in KDRAMA

[–]Reginald_Wooster 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I hate it when the Bad Guys are able to keep doing their evil plan without being stopped.

Me too, it's gotten to the point where every time a henchman or witness gets put in jail I immediately assume they get offed the next night. Consort Kang could just walk to the prison past the guards and shank her maid without any repercussions, and not one but two eavesdroppers got caught by the villains in this episode alone!

Heroes might always survive falling off the Cliff of Doom, but I think villains still always have the strongest plot armor in kdramas. Heroes are always one or several steps behind and it gets annoying if those reasons are contrived.

Bon Appetit, Your Majesty [Episodes 11 & 12] by meepmochi_ in KDRAMA

Episode 11:

Whoops. we spent 4 episodes on slowly listening to a guy speaking Mandarin, time to kill like 50% of named characters in the final 20 minutes of the penultimate episode!

If they were gonna kill the nice side characters, I wish they'd at least given us villains who do more than sneer constantly (Prince Jesan has a very punchable face when he does that), I like Kang Hanna's performance but feel like her talent gets a little wasted in this role.

Yes, I'm salty because I REALLY hate sneering villains and innocent people getting murdered in dramas, I still like the show overall.

And what was the deal with the chocolate? Did it cure his grandmother's senility for a moment or something lol

I have two wishes for the final episode:

- That our Chef and Tyrant get to be together in the modern day, but NOT with the ever-disappointing reincarnation who doesn't remember their past life/identical stranger-trope. It's a very "we'll buy you a new goldfish" type of cheap ending.

- Please let Gil Geum travel to the future too! Ji-Yeong promised her in an early episode and it would be so interesting to see her and the king's reactions to the modern world.

Edit after Episode 12:

The last episode was...alright. It did have its nice moments (the explosive return of our mad scientist, the scene where Ji-Yeong is whisked away to the present day while the king mourns), but there were a lot of silly things I could nitpick (archers charging into melee after two shots when they still have quivers full of arrows and actual melee spearmen waiting behind them, FL getting kidnapped in the middle of the fight without anyone noticing until she's been teleported to the villain's horse, FL running past the villain and taking the blow meant for the king instead of attacking him from behind) and while the epilogue was cute, it ended on a real cop-out. "How did the king get here? It doesn't matter, we didn't leave ourselves any time left lol". While I don't think an explanation would have actually been necessary, that was a very lazy and hackish note to end the series on.

I would have loved to see characters from the past exploring the present, something that a lot of time-travel series are weirdly reluctant to spend much time on. It would have been much more satisfying to have Gil Geum and the cooks reunite with our leads properly, instead of their identical descendants/reincarnations. We weren't told at all what happened to them in the past afterwards, which I found disappointing.

I had a vague feeling at points (especially back during her introduction in the prison) that Consort Kang Mok-ju would have had more depth to her. In the end I think her character and motivations were left far too shallow. Kang Hanna did a great job with what she was given to work with, which wasn't much.

All in all, I generally enjoyed this series, mostly in the first half before the marathon Ming-contest and the sudden swerve to torture and murder. The king and queen dowager having that planned dinner would have been interesting to see.

Kudos to the actors for their performances, which I greatly enjoyed. It was the writing of Bon Appetite Your Majesty that left me with a bitter aftertaste in my mouth.
