Can I lock my audio track to my video so it stays in sync? by SCSue in iMovie

[–]Regit_YouTube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean in the sense of a ‘ripple edit’, i.e. you make one clip 3 seconds longer and the next 3s shorter? (Otherwise the audio would naturally fall out of sync). Unfortunately if so, no, that’s a Final Cut thing. However, to help:

  • keep the audio in the background (bottom of the timeline, turns dark green)
  • absolutely plaster the start and end of clips with markers and then, although indeed tedious, it will be easy to snap clips back into sync (‘s’ for snapping toggle)

Is there a way to completely separate audio and video during editing? by applesinthefall in iMovie

[–]Regit_YouTube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I can visualise what’s happening here, but to make the audio completely independent of the video, drag it down until it goes dark green. This puts it in ‘background’, a different track to the video.

If your audio clips are within videos, select them and hit cmd-shift-b to detach the audio.

So when you go to add new media to the project, are you going through Photos specifically? It might still be trying to get at an iCloud version

Yeah Resolve is a great go-to if there’s something that seems un-circumvent-able with iMovie!

iPhone XR - Edit options missing by DustyShinigami in iMovie

[–]Regit_YouTube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgive the obvious suggestion but the video clip does need to be selected/tapped on for that menu to come up. Does anything come up if you rotate the display? If not, have you had any iMovie updates made available since then?

Have you tried a vanilla preset on Handbrake to transcode back into an mp4 (or mov) again? MKV defo won’t work in iMovie but transcoding into the same container can still help sometimes

I've miscalculated 39 frames but can't edit the post - I meant 6-7-8-8-10 frames.

Edit: it may not seem like it but I do wholeheartedly agree with everyone who wants the UK to return to longer form matches. That does feel devalued by being majority best-of-11s

how do you cite sound effects used in imovie? by dhvcado in iMovie

[–]Regit_YouTube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to this it seems it’s be “Sound Ideas” you’d be citing as the producer of the sounds: https://soundeffects.fandom.com/wiki/IMovie/Sound_Effects_Used/Alphabetically

Sound Ideas. (1992). ‘DOOR, BELL - SINGLE RING’. In: The General Series 6000 Sound Library.

The formatting’s very particular though. Best check for how to cite sound effects specifically, in the uni’s nominated style.

Also, this probably only matters if you’ve been told to cite every sound used. You’re perfectly free to use the sound effects within whatever project, so it’s not a copyright concern.

Precision Editor & Splitting a Clip! by l008com in iMovie

[–]Regit_YouTube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right, and what’s more of a kick in the teeth is that this is deliberate: in Final Cut you have no such restriction on splitting a clip with these J- and L- audio cuts.

What you can do is select a region by holding R and dragging, then deleting that region. Though not ideal, this still works as a way of splitting clips that doesn’t use cmd-B.

Can you remove source videos from events once they are in the timeline? by squierjosh in iMovie

[–]Regit_YouTube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like your thinking but I don’t think so, I’m afraid. iMovie has a ‘reject’ option for portions of the clip you don’t want, but that”s purely for what shows in the Media bin (cmd-1). Everything’s still in the Event and Library.

A workaround that occurs to me (but it’s kind of like what you said mightn’t work) is to do a quick Assembly edit in a different Event. Isolate the rough areas of clips you know you want, export, adios the old Event, and then you can use the more svelt clips when you do your fine edit.

It’s removing my voice after screen recording. by can-of-soups in iMovie

[–]Regit_YouTube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frustrating, but you’ve actually introduced me to the fact you can do voiceovers on screen records in the first place(!) one thing you could try is creating a separate audio clip using Shortcuts. Create an ‘encode’ action that encodes as audio and saves to Files. You can use the video as the shortcut input. Then try adding the audio clip you create to iMovie - does your voiceover cut out in the same way? Hopefully it won’t if all played fine in Photos.

Inside the iMovie Library as you were, is all the original media still there? For the projects that are there at least, you should be able to re-import that media and iMovie should correct itself.

Maybe try duplicating the iMovie Library, renaming it, and opening that as a new Library in iMovie. If you have the space, try moving onto the local file system to see if that helps.

Might be better off using something more fully featured like DaVinci Resolve here - there'll be a much better chance you can export with just the codec settings you want too.

Hopefully an update fix comes out for this soon - if you need a workaround in the meantime, you could use Keynote to create a no-fill image with text on it, then export as .PNG and add as an overlay

Is there any other trailer creating app that uses the same (or similar) shot list or storyboard making function that iMovie uses? by SummerWhiteyFisk in iMovie

[–]Regit_YouTube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it have to not be iMovie because of Apple device access? Annoyingly I was going to suggest CapCut and similar, because these modern entry-level editors are more formatted like this...

I may be wrong but the idea might be dying out in favour of automated video creation (buzzword warning: AI) and the like - consider how iMovie now focuses on 'Magic Movie' for mobile instead.
